Aaron Rodgers wants out. Unfortunately for him, the Packers’ GM says the star quarterback isn’t going anywhere.
“No, we’re not going to trade Aaron Rodgers,” Brian Gutekunst told reporters after the first round of the NFL Draft (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport).
Rodgers and the Packers have been negotiating a new deal for months, but Rodgers has been unhappy with the nature of the talks. The Packers are reportedly seeking a restructuring of his deal that would grant them cap relief. Meanwhile, Rodgers is seeking a lucrative long-term extension.
The Broncos, 49ers, and Raiders were reportedly high on the QBs’ wish list, but trade talks were a non-starter for Green Bay. Ultimately, the Niners stuck with the No. 3 pick they traded up for and used it on Trey Lance, but GM John Lynch admitted that he first tried to swing a deal for Rodgers.
“You‘re talking about the MVP of our league last year,” Lynch said (via the San Jose Mercury News). “I don’t know about you guys, but when the MVP of the league might be available — and I didn’t know that, I’m just reading the tea leaves like everybody else and saying, ‘Hold on, is something going on here?’ Yeah, we inquired. And it was a quick end to the conversation. It wasn’t happening.”
“As we said, we’ve been convicted and excited for a long, long time, so we went right back to where we’ve been and that’s really excited about adding Trey Lance to the 49ers and we’re thrilled about that.”
It’s possible that the Niners were not convicted, but were perhaps convinced?
Proof-reading doesn’t exist here. They don’t even read or talk about what is posted on their site. He wrote an article with the Exact same headline as another writer and they were published almost back to back.
Guys, back off! There’s no error. Lynch was quoted correctly. Again, they were “convinced” Lance was their guy so they were “convicted” to drafting him. Even though I was convinced that I was hungry for a cheeseburger, I remained convicted to my diet so I bought a salad. Damn, now all I can think of is In and Out.
You can’t change a quote, idiot.
“Me, I always tell the truth…even when I lie” (Al Pacino/Scarface)
“They’ll never take Atlanta!” LOL
Hub, I believe “convicted” refers to the fact that they were convicted on picking Trey Lance.
To be fair, some former 49er players were convicted over the past several years
This will not end well or with a Packers championship.
I call BS! If he doesn’t want to play there trade him.
leverage
He will get traded, every gm says “we aren’t doing ________” right before they do exactly ________
The packers have something like a 20 million cap hit if they trade him this year. Not going to happen at least not till 2022.
After June 1st they save like 20m or something like that.
raider j81 Why? Packers have all the leverage here. All Rodgers has left to force their hand by the start of the season is the threat of retirement which he likely wouldn’t want to follow through on, and the Packer Front Office knows it.
He wants to host Jeopardy, so I’m not so sure he wouldn’t call it quits if he’s that unhappy. I just don’t think GB holds all the leverage. They have the upper hand, but Rodgers could sink them with a retirement announcement and make them look foolish
“let’s keep a disgruntled and unhappy starting qb and win the whole thing.” Words that were never spoken by a winning front office
Even if he’s disgruntled he’s still going to play and compete because football. I’d take a pissed off Rodgers over no Rodgers any day.
What if he decides to not play?
Then he doesn’t play.
Without Rodgers, the Packers basically hit the reset button with Love taking over…which is usually why teams draft a QB. This is similar to the Favre > Rodgers situation, and that worked out fine for the Pack.
The packers are a joke! They have been waisting A-Rod’s career by drafting for the distant future when they are really only a couple pieces away from being a true contender. He is literally throwing to UDFAs while they continue to use high picks on backup players who they don’t need right now (AJ Dillon, Jordan Love, etc.). I’d want out of there too!
And those UDAs are helping them be the #1 offense. I mean I’d run out and pay mega bucks for what the talking heads want to see when I’m proving I don’t have to. Can this crap about receivers end soon please!
Which UDFA’s are you referring to? Lazard and Tonyan? Lazard is a #3 WR and Tonyan was a pro bowl snub last season. The Packers have done very well drafting WRs on day 2 (Davante Adams, Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb).
I honestly get sick of hearing how the Packers have never drafted a WR in the 1st Rd for A-Rod. Why should they when they have found star caliber players in the 2nd Rd? It’s like saying the Seahawks never did anything to upgrade their defense because the majority of the Legion of Boom were drafted outside the first two rounds (Earl Thomas and Bruce Irvin – 1st Rd and Bobby Wagner – 2nd Rd).
What a travesty they were forced to surround HOFer Earl Thomas with a bunch of 4th-6th round picks! I mean who wants to play next to Richard Sherman (5th), Kam Chancellor (5th), Byron Maxwell (6th) and Walter Thurmond (4th)?
I never understood what motivates commenters to take their time to post about errors in grammar or spelling. As if they are perfect… or as if you couldn’t still understand the story. To each their own I guess. I can only assume someone has been very critical of them in their life, so they pass on the nonsense.
Calling others on spelling and grammar errors has nothing to do with thinking one is perfect, but (for me) is about educating. If it wasn’t just a typing mistake, what’s wrong with learning that you’ve been spelling or saying something incorrectly your whole life? People are so fragile that being ignorant of small things is a huge insult instead of a statement of fact, especially when it’s usually totally ok to simply not know something. Get over it! To me, the ones who think they’re perfect are the ones who can’t handle being told they made a mistake…
Correct language is how we communicate, without agreed upon rules, our meaning can be convoluted by errors or by the use of incorrect grammar or spelling…I know it’s annoying to most, but it’s extremely important if one wants to be understood and taken seriously.
So, how do you handle a writer quoting someone, even if you or someone else thinks it’s incorrect. Bc that’s what this is.
I disagree , but if you say so. Nothing to “get over” , it’s not that serious, just making my point just like you. Eye hop u hav a grate dae!
Rodgers will be traded. if they wanted to keep him and show him they were deadicated to him they should have gave him the first rd pick to pick the O player he wanted and that would show that they want him and might have helped them heal some wounds but he’s told em he wants weapons but they don’t listen so I think he will be traded after all it’s only gonna hurt Them if he doesn’t play as he’s got money . So if he retires then they r screwed out of a good return for him . I mean he’s 36 so at most I’d say he has 4 yrs left so they won’t get a kings ransom for him but netting a first and second + or two ones + from win now teams is in the realm but getting nothing for him makes the team alot worse
So the ball’s in Aaron’s court… I think he’ll sit out and the Packers will be just as sorry as if they traded him…
Until June 2nd when the 49ers give them Trey Lance, Jim G and future draft picks for AR
So..what is GB going to do with 2 unproven guys and Jimmy Rolledankle-o? I mean besides go 8-9 if they’re lucky.
What’s GB going to do with 3 tangible QB’s?
Plus the Packers Brass already said that even if they did decide to trade Rodgers it will definitely not be to a team in the same NFC Conference no matter what.
Think this was the last straw for rodgers…yes they made contract offers…but everyone were restucture type deals they refused to extend ..he has been saying all along he just wanted to know he had job security…they drafted his replacement and every action since has been a commitment to love if they really wanted rodgers to stay they could of just added a year or two to his contract…but they did everything they could to avoid that…clearly sending the message to rodgers they still plan on moving from him in the near future…post june trade possible here i think cause then they can save 22 million
everyone keeps saying it’s about money. He wants (wanted) to know he was the guy until he..or the 2 sides mutually agreed he..wasn’t playing well enough anymore.
I’m certainly not privy to the inside negotiations like all these unnamed sources, but I believe he’d agree to a sizable salary reduction IF it was guaranteed through the 2022 (maybe ’23) season, and they gave any indication they would draft or sign a potential weapon (newsflash: Funchess doesn’t qualify) to get the offense over the hump.
Get the offense over what hump? They had the top rated offense in the NFL last season. Not sure what else the offense needs to do to get this team “over the hump” but I’d be looking at how the defense can pull its own weight for an entire season.
Sometime late last night Mark Schlereth (yeah, I’m laughing too) said a deal with Denver was imminent. How is it possible he was wrong? All these rumor mongers have been spot on with every garbage report up to that point…
I doubt anything imminent but unless they realize how screwed they are do a complete 180 and extend him they might as well get a huge haul for him…be interesting if they do what they do with love…sitting him 4 to 5 years not likely
Agree with you guys. Drafting Love is what started all of this. It just gets to be a decision that looks dumber and dumber as time goes along. U don’t draft a backup QB with a first round pick, and they knew darn well he wasn’t going to play for 4 years because they had just extended Rodgers. It just doesn’t make any sense! There are really only 2 options, trade Rodgers or trade Love. One of those things should’ve happened before the draft, but obviously didn’t. The Rodgers cap hit is halved after June if he’s traded, but how do you put a value on the league MVP? What a damn mess.
I said this this morning, but…just as true now…
So, what was Rodgers’ plan yesterday?
Leak this to the media and hope the Packers panic and trade him with only a few hours before the draft with no possible way to field legitimate offers on the scale needed to trade him?
That is a dumb guy’s idea of a smart plan.
Give them even 24 hours more and they might have been able to move him.
Realistically, as good as he is, if Rashard Mendenhall doesn’t fumble, Rodgers might have zero rings right now.
Packers should bite the bullet, trade him for as much as they can (his value will never be higher again) and build around Love. Make the right deal and they can blanket Love with great pieces around him and make the playoffs for another decade.
The giant problem here is assuming Love can be as good as Rodgers already is. You better be prepared to give up a proven commodity for a lottery ticket. You can’t deny Rodgers’s accuracy, arm, completion percentages, QB rating and on and on. We have no idea how Love will perform. At the same time, Rodgers’s salary is hampering the ability to acquire talent. Quite a conundrum…
I’m still waiting for actual proof ANY of the garbage thats been “leaked” came from a reputable source, on either side, since this mess started.
Rodgers wasn’t happy they drafted Love. He responded by playing arguably his best season.
When asked after the NFCCG what the future holds, he said it was uncertain. And thats essentially all we’ve heard directly from him or his camp.
GB brass continues to say they’re not trading him. I know when a GM or coach is adamant about something like that it often precedes the opposite, but again do we really have ANY tangible, factual information from either side he is demanding a trade? Or is it just more conjecture, speculation, rumor and/or wishful thinking by talking heads who get paid to stir up s4it?
Why doesn’t Rodgers just chime in and put an end to it then? If he wants out, confirm it and force the issue. Why sit and let this fester?
Rodgers didn’t leak anything. Everyone already knew he wasn’t happy since last year. Shelter is the one who dropped the report last minute before draft.
I guess the next development we should expect is a scandal magically appearing that allows the Packers to distance themselves from Rodgers. Does Tony Buzbee have any relatives in Wisconsin?
Aaron Rodgers will Never be satisfied. Hell go somewhere else and complain. Dude can’t even get along with his own family. So take that for what it’s worth.
Rodgers is all sizzle and no steak. He’ll never be worth more on the trade market, thus the Packers should trade his over-valued fanny.
I agree his value is as high as it’ll ever be right now. And there is a sample of what they should be able to get following the Stafford trade because Rodgers is a better player.
1-4 in NFC Championships, dump him
First Jake gets the meat, then he gets the jug of ranch, then he gets to hang out with Mahomes playing cornhole. What does Rodgers get? Chris Farley with cheese on his head impersonating him. No respect. No wonder why he’s disgruntled.
Packers dont have much leverage here.
Rodgers has a potential out after 2021.
Davante Adams, Robert Tonyan, Allen Lazard, Marquez Valdes Scantling are all free agents after 2021.
You tag Adams, Rodgers walks and Packers get nothing for him.
Packers have a huge overhaul coming up.
What potential out? The Packers have a potential out. Not Rodgers. I don’t know any NFL contract with an opt-out clause.
Rodgers is going to be 41 when his deal is up. So, whatever he was expecting is absurd…an extension to 45?
This is also the year hes going to get hurt if you believe those trends that fantasy players put out like ‘an every other year guy’.

Just said a potential out. Didn’t specifically if it was team or player.
I truly believe that Aaron’s foray into doing Jeopardy (not that he wants to do ‘that’) opened his eyes to ‘life without football’. He’s got a ton of dough, he’s an MVP, he’s a Super Bowl winner. All he’s known til now is football. He may have come to the realization that he can do whatever he wants without much recourse. He doesn’t have to worry about ‘keeping his job’. Sure, he wants to play and win, but I think he sees now that if he can’t do it in a way he likes, he has choices, he can just walk away, there’s plenty of life outside of football.
And he’s got a cool chick now too!
They better trade him and get something for him before he walks and they get nothing!
