Aaron Rodgers‘ immediate future is not in jeopardy, Packers GM Brian Gutekunst says (Twitter link via Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com). Despite the lingering contract talks and all the speculation, Gutekunst insists that everything will work out between the quarterback and the front office.
“Aaron’s our guy; he’s going to be our quarterback for the foreseeable future,” Gutekunst said. “We’re excited about the kind of the things we’re going to try to accomplish here over the next couple years. So we certainly think with the contract that you’re kind of talking about is something we’ll work through. We’re going to have to do probably a few things with different contracts as we head toward the season and then through the season to make sure that our salary cap situation, not only this year, but in 2022 is square. So we’re not done yet. We’ve done a lot to get here. We’ve kind of been doing things as we go and we will continue to do that as we go.”
The two sides are still “working through” Rodgers’ contract, which has no remaining guarantees. As it stands, the Packers could part ways with Rodgers next year and save ~$25 million against the 2022 cap. That doesn’t sit well with Rodgers, who knows that the Packers project to be top-heavy beyond 2021.
Rodgers, 37, captured his third MVP trophy last year while rookie Jordan Love watched from the sidelines. Thanks to Rodgers and his NFL-leading 48 touchdown passes, the Packers reached the NFC championship game and fell just short of beating the Buccaneers.
How much trade value does Love have?
Hopefully there’s a preseason and he can play well.
It’s kind of a sunk cost at this point, and they don’t really have the cap space yo get a decent backup.
May as well use Love as the primary backup this year and see what happens.
Bearded Texas Hulk I doubt they trade Love just to make Rodgers feel better. He’s not going to build enough trade value to make it worth it without playing in any real games anyway. They shouldn’t have drafted Love 1st round, but it’s best to stick with that future plan then to abandon it now because of Aaron’s ego.
What a stupid comment.
It’s about getting more talent. Nice armchair psychology.
Aaron’s ego? Are you serious? Dude is a top 3 QB in the league and had potentially his best year last year. You get rid of Love because it was a bad and stupid pick and because even if Love completely pans out and exceeds expectations, he probably still won’t be anywhere near as good as Rodgers is now and for the next few years.
I don’t know if you’re a Packers fan or not, but it is so insane to me how easily you all dump on Rodgers and his supposed personality defects. Dude is one of the greatest QBs in history and is still at his peak but you’re all (the fans AND the front office) just itching to get rid of him. Go try to be a Bears fan or something and know how lucky you are to have Rodgers.
Wasn’t Love the 3rd stringer last year?
None he sucks
Love was a reach anyway, he needs time and Thursday you’ll see Lance go off the board far earlier as a huge reach…
Maybe the first sentence should say Aaron Rodgers immediate future is not ON jeopardy.
beat me to it
Love was viewed as a reach, but look at the absurdity of this year’s draft. They are talking about 3rd-5th round QBs going in the late 1st. So is it a reach 1 year removed?
The only way they draft high enough to get a replacement for Rodgers is if the wheels fall off. They have him for at least 4 years including this one. And if anyone here has owned Rodgers in Fantasy and been burned, you need a quality backup.
Love was also a much lower level prospect than even this year’s crop. The thing is, last year there were a lot of other first rounders spread between the QBs. This year, the number of surefire first round picks is absurdly low, which pushes the quarterbacks up higher. In any other year, a tight end going at four would be notable (even as good as Pitts is, and yes, he’s really a pure wide receiver).
There likely won’t be a single defensive player taken in the top five, and maybe even the top ten. This speaks to how weak this draft class is overall-or, more accurately, how hard it is to evaluate given the opt-outs, uneven schedules, cancelled games, quarantines, and lack of tape from last year. QBs will easily rise to the top, as they are the most visible players on the field.
Rodgers “ isn’t happy about that” Packer fans aren’t happy about him choking away the playoffs and constantly whining. Subtraction is adding with him at this point.
Death, taxes and people in NFLTR comment sections having ridiculous opinions about Rodgers. The man is the Packers whole franchise. The team around him has held them back, not AR. It’s the same people who act like Brady is the whole reason his teams win. There are 53 men on a team. Success goes way beyond the QB.
Yeah, man, subtracting one of the best QBs in the league is totally addition. Run Jordan Love’s unprepared and overrated butt out there and see how many playoff appearances, much less wins, the Packers get.
I don’t know why anyone responds to Yep it is. I’ve never seen him leave a constructive comment on this site, especially where Aaron Rodgers, the Detroit Lions, or the AFC West is concerned.
Monday: Rodgers Is our guy
Draft weekend: Packers select four QBs
no reason to trade love . they need to groom a future QB while they have Rodgers so Love can Learn from him . Rodgers is 37 so at most he has a few yrs left before he retires . love should be primary backup .
We should have kept Tim Boyle and got rid of the turd Love!!
“Immediate future not in jeopardy” that’s absolute GOLD, Zachary!
There is something about Love that isn’t playing well either on the practice field, the classroom or the locker room. He spent the entire season as the third string QB and the Packers are backpeddling quicker than a QB with no offensive line facing Myles Garrett.
“Until he isn’t.”
Might be waiting a while for an article where Aaron Rodgers announces “Brian Gutekunst is my guy”.
If Love is better than Wilson trade #2 to GB and GB takes Chase for Rodgers.
