Richard Sherman recently said he’d be open to returning to the Seahawks and Pete Carroll, but he could end up reuniting with a different head coach that he’s familiar with.
New Jets head coach Robert Saleh is interested in reuniting with Sherman in New York, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com is told. Whether or not GM Joe Douglas will sign off on such a move apparently “depends on a few factors.” Cimini notes it could hinge on what the Jets do at cornerback in the draft, which could mesh since we heard a couple of weeks ago Sherman wasn’t planning on signing before the draft.
Cimini also says that Sherman “seemingly would prefer a contending team in the West,” so it’s not clear the interest is entirely mutual. Saleh, of course, was Sherman’s defensive coordinator in San Francisco the past few seasons. Sherman spent a long time as one of the top corners in the league as part of Seattle’s legendary ‘Legion of Boom’ defenses, then signed with the 49ers in 2018.
The Stanford product was limited to only five games this past year and turned 33 last month, but he was still a second-team All-Pro in 2019. He’ll be an interesting gamble for a team, as he’s past his prime and coming off an injury-plagued year, but also played at a very high level not too long ago.
As Cimini cautions there are “a few bridges to cross before anything happens,” but it sounds like there is another very realistic suitor for Sherman on the table.
I don’t see this working out. For one, why would Sherman want to play for the Jets? Two, Sherman became pretty divisive when he wasn’t happy in Seattle. Not sure I’d want that guy poisoning the well on a young team if things don’t go his way.
That’s exactly what I was thinking why would Sherman play for the Jets. Unless he cares more about money then being a ring chaser since he has one already.
because it looks like nobody else wants him, ever think about that. i called this happening months ago, whatever.
If Seattle is thinking about doing this I believe this is one Russ needs to be asked about. There were some not so nice things said about Wilson that might need to be settled. Sherm was not the most outspoken of the group but still not happy.
That being said if the Jets want him they can pay more than most for him. Just depends on what Sherm wants out of the deal. I want him back but mostly so the 49ers fans can make him number 1 hated player again. Whatever happens his last contract will be with Seattle for a day so he can retire here. Best of luck Sherm.
Yup, and he basically gave up on the 49ers when he thought they didn’t have the money to bring him back. He isn’t happy he turns his back on the team basically and isn’t really giving it his all. Guys a HOF CB and even though he tormented my 49ers in Seattle I was really happy to get him. Was a great pick up for them but I really don’t like how his attitude is once things go bad or not his way. Don’t think it would be a good fit for the Jets. I can see him going to the Chiefs maybe, not sure their situation with the secondary, back to Seattle, possibly even back to the 49ers if they don’t find a CB they like in the draft. But definitely should only be going to a place he can get another ring at this point in his career.

He’ll wind up in dallas
He’s definitely lost a step, which became obvious after watching him get burned more than a few times last season.
I think he could still be pretty effective in a zone scheme, or possibly even as a safety, but if he’s lined up against a speedster, he’s going to get outran more often than not..
Would love for the Raiders to grab him to help mold these young DB’s in Gus Bradley’s new defense
Leaders are tough to find. But you need people that lead in the correct direction… The Texans learned that lesson the hard way this year.
