It’s no longer a house divided. Falcons GM Terry Fontenot and head coach Arthur Smith are now “aligned” on what to do with the No. 4 overall pick in the draft, according to D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Earlier this week, we heard that Fontenot was pushing for a quarterback. Meanwhile, Smith wanted to stay the course with Matt Ryan. Ryan is on the verge of his 36th birthday, but he’s been durable and fairly steady.
Of course, we don’t know where the Falcons ultimately landed, and we probably won’t know for sure until the draft kicks off on April 29th in Cleveland. The Falcons are in an enviable position — the Jaguars, Jets, and 49ers are all expected to tap quarterbacks with the first three picks, which would allow them to take the best non-quarterback in this year’s class. They could also trade down and parlay that pick into a wealth of ammo for 2022 and beyond.
If they resist the urge to take a QB, the Falcons could select Florida tight end Kyle Pitts, Oregon offensive tackle Penei Sewell, LSU wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase, or Alabama cornerback Patrick Surtain II. Or, if they stand pat to grab Matt Ryan’s successor, they could come away with Trey Lance — the North Dakota State product who could have more upside than Zach Wilson and Mac Jones (basically, a higher ceiling than any passer not named Trevor Lawrence).
Well I havent looked at the contracts but Mattews and McGary are good enough to not take Sewell.
Why waste a pick on Lance/Fields/Joned? Don’t need a LT, QB, WR, or TE. They should trade back and take Defense. I don’t see a trade happening until the 49ers pick.
I agree. You have your ‘bridge QB’ in Ryan. He’s good enough. Trade back, & get young.
Build the team up enough, then when you can get out of Ryan without a cap hit, get the cheap QB.
Totally agree. If Dallas is really as enamored with Pitts as is being reported, I’d call them up and see if I could get a 3rd this season and their 1st rounder next season. Atlanta needs defense more than anything. By QB standards, Ryan isn’t that old.
I don’t think that’s quite enough to move back to 10. The first next year is a must. But I think it would require a two this year as well or maybe a third this year and next year instead of the 2nd this year. If they could get that, I would take it and then grab Surtain or Horn at 10. I might even consider trading back again from 10 if possible.
I am a falcons fan. I think we ultimately trade back and get someone like travis or najee and use the extra 2nd rounder for a guard/center. It would be nice to get a brige QB (i like fields a lot more than lance), because then we dont have to waste a year (or 2) to tank to get another future QB.
Y’all need defense like the desert needs rain.
We are in a division with highpower offenses. Making our weak defense just avg wont do anything for us. I rather make our avg offense into an explosive offense. Ryan julio ridley pitts (4th) and maybe a rb at pick 36th, (mike dsvis is just a compliment runner). 3rd rounder get a center/guard. Then rest of picks on defense
Still do not know why they would not take a RB from Alabama as their running game was crappy last year. Would hope Harris would turn out to be similar to Kamara.
Not the right spot for it. I think they would take him if around 15, so a trade back and hope would be smart.
That being said, there is SO much talent at 4 that could help them immediately, gambling on Lance seems a but ridiculous.
