The Dolphins have agreed to trade Ereck Flowers to the Washington Football Team (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport). The guard will head to D.C. in a swap of late-round picks.
The deal frees up cap room for the Dolphins, who will have to allocate lots of dollars to their oversized draft class. On Thursday, they’ll start things off with two first-round choices at No. 6 and No. 18 overall.
Meanwhile, Washington gets to reunite with a familiar face. Flowers couldn’t hack it as an offensive tackle in the NFL, but he has reinvented himself as a guard. In 2019, he parlayed a strong showing as Washington’s LG into a three-year, $30MM contract with the Dolphins last year. It was more money than anyone expected for Flowers, though there weren’t many quality lineman on the board. After the Redskins locked down Brandon Scherff and the Patriots took Joe Thuney off of the market with a surprise franchise tag, Flowers was looking better than ever to teams in need of interior help.
Flowers stayed on the interior in Miami, serving as their starting LG in all 14 of his games. He earned decent marks from Pro Football Focus — his 65.9 overall score had him tied as the No. 32 guard in the NFL.
With two years to go on his deal, the former first-round pick is set to earn $9MM in 2021.
I would like to see the overall plan, because it feels like the Dolphins have signed a lot of average players and let some good ones go.
Van Noy was still an effective pass rusher, but his coverage skills were waning pretty bad and he’s a case of cutting ties a year too early than late.
Flowers rating matches the eye test. He was an overpay at 10/yr for a middling guard, so at worst they can replace his production through someone like Green in the draft or sign a similar vet to Flowers but at half the cost, around 5-6 mil in all likelihood.
Releasing those contracts gives the Phins huge flexibility. Plus, Miami likely trades into the back of the 1st round for 3 1st rounders. Should be interesting.
Fitz move ? Don’t they have like 3 guys they drafted for the LG spot? still need a bonafide LT
AND Sign Scherff already !
This is a pretty lame attempt at a positional upgrade by Washington but perhaps Daniel Snyder is trying to get more of his QBs to consider retirement.
This allows them to trade Scherff on draft night and not overpay an oft injured guard $18mill plus on long term deal
My guess would be Penei Sewell if the Dolphins stay at 6.
Signed Will Fuller to be Tuas #1.
Sewell replaces Jackson at LT and Jackson replaces Jesse Davis at RT.
Sewell, Kindley, C , Hunt, Jackson
Tua is a lefty, so RT is more important and where Sewell would play.
Fuller isn’t the #1, that’s probably still Parker considering the long-term commitment. Fuller only signed for 1 year so he wouldn’t be a deterrent to drafting another wr. I see Miami’s board as Pitts/chase/trade/Sewell/waddle/smith
Same but sounds like Atlanta takes Pitt, Bengals take Chase, and Dolphins may or may not trade out of 6. If they don’t I see Sewell being taken.
Very nice for the Redskins. Flowers was excellent at guard in DC. Splendid that the Dolphins are paying much of the freight this year. Three starters now and time to trade Scherff to an OL needy contender in mid-season if he won’t sign a reasonably priced long term deal to stay in DC.
Welcome back to Washington Erick!
