The Cowboys could be eyeing a cornerback with the No. 10 pick, but it sounds like the organization is split on who they should take. Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network reports that there’s a “50/50 split” in the Dallas front office about whether the team should select Patrick Surtain II or Jaycee Horn with their first-round pick.
If the Cowboys are indeed seeking a cornerback, it makes sense that the team is deciding between Surtain and Horn; the duo has established themselves as the top-two cornerbacks in the entire draft. Dallas could use reinforcement everywhere on their defense, but as ESPN’s Todd Archer notes, there aren’t pass-rushers or defensive tackles worth taking at the No. 10 spot (and the team’s need for a linebacker doesn’t outweigh their need for a cornerback). While the Cowboys front office is apparently struggling to decide which of the cornerbacks to select (assuming they even have that luxury), the team can be confident that they’ll be adding a foundational piece to their defense.
While it’s always important to take pre-draft news with a grain of salt, Archer notes that the Cowboys have generally hinted at their first-round selection days before the draft. The reporter details how the Cowboys have narrowed their focus on a specific first-rounder each year since 2015, with the one exception being last year when CeeDee Lamb unexpectedly fell.
One thing is for sure: the Cowboys won’t be trading up from No. 10. The team has made it abundantly clear that they won’t pay the required bounty in order to move up the draft board, even if tight end Kyle Pitts (a Jerry Jones favorite) falls outside of the top-four
I can tell you the broadcasters here in the DFW love Horn. Like they act like he is God. But I like Surtain should be the pick. Just as good but a safer prospect.
I agree with you. Surtain has much better technique and is just as fast. If horn has to grab every receiver in college, how many pass interference calls is he going to take in the pros?
Playing for Dallas, officiating isn’t a problem normally…
Tell that to Dez Bryant
This made me laugh through the tears.
People may make fun of Jerry Jones meddling in draft pick decisions but he has actually made some good selections over the years.
Jerra “ Nose Picker on National TV “ along with his twin “ ego” is an easy target. Now how many titles has he won in the last 22 years??
If he is such an easy target, why do you need to call him names EVERY time you post?
How old are you, five?
And Jones has made awful picks too
I think Stephen Jones has been making the selections, not Jerry. But regardless they’ve had good drafts.
2010 – Dez, Sean Lee.
2011 – Tyron Smith, Bruce Carter, DeMarco Murray.
2012 – Tyrone Crawford (Claiborne was a bust)
2013 – Travis Frederick, Terrance Williams
2014 – Zack Martin, DeMarcus Lawrence, Anthony Hitchens
2015 – Byron Jones, Damien Wilson (Gregory was a waste)
2016 – Zeke, Jaylon Smith, Maliek Collins, Dak Prescott, Anthony Brown
2017 – Xavier Woods (Charlton bust, Awuzie & Lewis marginal players)
2018 – Vander Esch, Connor Williams, Gallup
2019 – McGovern and Pollard (Hill is a bust)
2020 – Lamb and Diggs
Of their 1st round picks – only 2 busts since 2010.
Of their 2nd round picks – only 2 busts and a few playable but marginal players.
Great drafting!
If Jones wouldn’t allow himself to be extorted by his “stars” on offense, the Cowboys could field a really good team. That 25% premium he pays for his homegrown stars has sunk the team though.
Personally I wouldn’t have paid Zeke or Dak. I would have went into the draft with Dak under the FT and drafted a QB. Would be hard to tag and trade him at this point tho. Doesn’t fix their Defense issue, but you had a LOT of teams desperate enough for a QB.
Drafting a quarterback is hardly a slam dunk. The fail rate on drafted quarterbacks is way too high for my liking. For every Aaron Rodgers there is a Ryan Leaf. When you find a quality QB, you keep him. Go back and look at the QBs for the Cowboys from 2001 to 2005. It’s a sobering list. There’s a reason why a lot of teams are desperate for a quarterback; good ones are hard to find.
People make fun of Jerry Jones because he’s a bad person whose failures are usually the result of his own ego.
But, sure, there was that time he got talked out of Manziel to take the center.
The safer move is probably to trade back to 15 and get Gilmore and then take Parsons or Paye.
Also the more expensive move
I think they’d figure it out cap wise with an extension and cut Zeke next year. Wouldn’t be surprised to see a RB selected this year unless they wait til next season after cutting Zeke.
RB next year offers more cheap rookie seasons.
I just like this years class for the 2nd round if they slip.
I prefer Horn, but I think they’ll both be good corners. I’d be ok with either.
Like Phillyballers idea of trading back either to 15 with the Pats, even WFT would be interested and at 19 you could still get something good on defence.
Trading back with New England for Stephen Gilmore and 15 for just 10 seems a little steep for Belicheck don’t you think? I would think Jerry would have to add which he would not want to do most likely. I am not sure the angle they would go here.
Doubt WFT and the Cowboys come up with a deal at the draft being they are in the same division.
A trade down only happens if a QB or tackle drops past picks 7,8,9. That’s highly unlikely to happen(but could).
Gilmore will want a new contract. So you have to factor that in.
Between Horn and Surtain they both get it done.
Horn can cover with the best of them. He is not going to disappoint any team that takes him. Problem is, he has a lot of Josh Norman in him. Talks alot but he can back it.
Surtain Jr is as technical as they come. Just as fast and he has played against the best of the best. He just gets it done game after game. One of my favorite players in this draft.
You can’t go wrong either way. I lean towards Patrick Surtain Jr but I would take Jaycee Horn for the TV alone.
Would Dallas consider Parsons with Lee retiring?
I think they may use Neal/Goodwin. I think Parsons may end up sliding. You could possibly get him at 15 if they traded back.
This is how the draft has to go for the Cowboys to get their choice.
1, 2, 3 QB.
4 Pitts
5 Chase
6 Smith
7- 9 Trade for a QB or Waddle, Sewell, and Slater are taken.
10 Cowboys get Surtain
If the Lions take and OL. Denever may go DB.
