Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is “infatuated” with tight end Kyle Pitts, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen (via 24/7 Sports). Pitts probably won’t be available at No. 10, so Jones would have to move up the board to get his man.
The Cowboys have several key needs to address in the draft including cornerback, offensive tackle, and safety. The tight end position isn’t among the most glaring holes, but Pitts’ off-the-charts athleticism and pass-catching ability has caught Jones’ attention in a serious way.
To snag him, Jones may have to move up as high as No. 4 overall, after the Jaguars, Jets, and 49ers take their quarterbacks. The Falcons could be willing to move that pick, but they’ll need to be blown away by an offer — especially since new GM Terry Fontenot wants a quarterback while new head coach Arthur Smith wants to stick with Matt Ryan. Also, the Falcons are pretty fond of Pitts themselves.
Right now, it seems unlikely that Pitts will get past the No. 6 overall pick. To get there, the Cowboys would probably have to sacrifice their 2022 first-round pick.
Pitts, a quarterback in high school, moved to tight end at UF and quickly put himself on the NFL radar. Last year, he snagged 43 catches for 770 yards and 12 touchdowns in just eight games, finishing out with an eye-popping 17.9 yards per grab.
It never worked out when I was infatuated.

Smokescreen. He’s saying this so the defensive player he wants will be there at 10.
There’s no need for a smokescreen when the player that you’re smoking is a lock for the top six anyways
The Cowboys D is terrible and he wants a tight end? It’s getting harder and harder to be a fan of this team.
This guy is the 2nd best player in this draft. You don’t draft based on need. Take the BPA. He’s a generational talent. Sign Sherman and draft Pitts if he’s there.
Right, you don’t draft off need, but you don’t trade up and give additional picks to get a guy that plays a position you already have covered. Now, if they needed to trade up for a DB, that would be a different story. They should sit where they are and take the beds OL or DB available.
Jarwin and Schultz dont exactly scream “covered” they just have dudes filling the role.
Jarwin and Schultz are fine when you had the second worst defense in team history and likely the best corner in the draft getting to you at 10
As an Eagle fan,I really don’t wanna see the Cowboys with Pitts@te,Elliot@rb,and a Cooper,Lamb,& Gallop receiver trio. That could be a pretty scary offense, especially with a QB that can run.
Depends on the price. Problem is, they don’t move up to go Pitts and then they sit at 10 and and Surtain comes off the board. Farley could go too. I’ve seen Horn mocked to them, seems like a reach. This is not a good draft for defense IMO. You have 2 top-10 talents in Surtain and Parsons. So maybe they go Tackle if one falls to them.
But if Surtain is gone, sitting at 10 was not the right move.
They aren’t “fine” just because other positions are worse. And this is precisely why you don’t draft for need. Because that line of thinking gets you burned and you stay mediocre.
Getting harder to be a fan? Going on 26 years of mediocrity at this point.
Drafting for need is stupid. Take the best player available.
I hope he’s ready to give up the farm to get him, because he isn’t falling to 10.
Go get him Jerry………Give up the farm and get him!!!
I hate the boys and hope he ruins his draft next year for a poition NOT of need.
gotta say something about Jerry, he seems quite passionate. more engaged then many owners.
Considering that he’s also the GM, he’d better be more engaged than most owners.
This is who Jerry is. Just like Ceedee lamb
When was the last time a TE taken in the first round lived up to the hype? Gronk, Kelce, and Kittle are fantastic examples of TE talents that were cultivated over time with reasonable and attainable expectations. On the other hand, the lackluster performances from first-rounders like Ebron, Engram, Fant, OJ Howard, and Maxx Williams should be reminders that hype doesn’t equal value. They’re not terrible players by any means, but they certainly have not lived up to those lofty draft positions. Reaching for the “it” guy has often been a mistake at the tight end position, so front offices should be wary of repeating this trend with Pitts.
Agreed, it’s the hardest position to evaluate. And pitts screams Ebron, running a 4.4 isn’t what makes a good te, it’s 75% route running and 25% yac.
Yup. Jason witten is a hall of famer and at his peak he probably ran a 4.7 40
Um.. 2019 TJ Hockenson 8th overall and Noah Fant 20th overall. OJ Howard before injuries, Evan Ingram looks ight, Eric Ebrons had some good years, Greg Olsen, Vernon Davis, Mercedes Lewis is still in the league.
Njokue sucks and Pettigrew sucked and Eifert sucks.
Even though we’ve stated this draft is all about defense for us. This franchise is a joke.
There’s only 1 player at 10 tho. Surtain.
Ole Jerra is a genius. Just ask him. Also ask him how many he has won since JJ left him with a loaded team?
Never seen him play…
Is he Gronk in his prime and then some?
If so, then yeah, you find a way to get him. But not Jerry, **** him.
He’s probably not Gronk, simply because he’s faster and not as good at blocking. He’s likely to fit in more as a Darren Waller type of tight end, but many see him as an outside receiver a la Calvin Johnson
The new NFL big brain play is to draft offensive players only. Kyle Pitts isn’t enough, the Cowboys will take another pass catcher or QB in the second round. QB’s are generally smart enough to play any position, so you draft a QB and let him play D-Line or LT.
Alex Smith is still a free agent. I think he could easily make a move to Safety for the Cowboys. Next, Jerry makes a trade for Teddy Bridgewater. Teddy would fit very nicely at either CB position.
Finally, the biggest big brain play ever, the Cowboys sign Tony Romo and Jason Witten for depth at the RB spot. Tony has some wheels and could be a great spell back behind Zeke. Maybe the most underrated 1-2 punch since Ronnie Brown and Rickey Williams in Miami. Witten is just an insurance policy and he’s a great locker room guy from all accounts, sources say.
I guess this would be significant news if anyone was actually “infatuated” with Mortensen or ESPN.
Jones – pitts pitts pitts pitts
Broncos we better draft pitts ha ha Jerry
Jones- thanks I’ll take surtain II wanted him all along
