The 49ers reached out to the Packers on Wednesday to inquire about trading for Aaron Rodgers (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero). However, no formal offer was made. Furthermore, a source tells Pelissero there’s a “zero percent chance” that the Packers will trade the star quarterback.
The Niners have been doing their due diligence on QBs, NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport tweets. In addition to Rodgers, they’ve also been poking around on embattled Texans passer Deshaun Watson. This wasn’t the first time they’ve called on Rodgers either. But, just as before, they were quickly rebuffed.
“Aaron’s our guy; he’s going to be our quarterback for the foreseeable future,” GM Brian Gutekunst said recently. “We’re excited about the kind of the things we’re going to try to accomplish here over the next couple years. So we certainly think with the contract that you’re kind of talking about is something we’ll work through. We’re going to have to do probably a few things with different contracts as we head toward the season and then through the season to make sure that our salary cap situation, not only this year, but in 2022 is square. So we’re not done yet. We’ve done a lot to get here. We’ve kind of been doing things as we go and we will continue to do that as we go.”
There have been some rumblings this offseason that Rodgers could want out of Green Bay, and if those rumblings are true it’s not hard to see him wanting to play for the 49ers. Rodgers is a Northern California native, and went to school at Cal in the Bay Area.
He has repeatedly hedged about his future when speaking publicly, recently saying again that things were “out of his control.” He certainly hasn’t sounded like someone who’s sure they’re going to be a Packer for life. Either way Rodgers’ contract needs to be adjusted for cap purposes, and there’s apparently a bit of a hold up with that, so something is definitely afoot.
It’s just hard to say what right now. Rodgers will in all likelihood be under center for the Packers come Week 1, but there’s a lot brewing beneath the surface here. The fact that the 49ers felt like it was worth making a call is revealing in its own right.
What would it cost to get him? They already wasted there next 3 picks….nick bosa, this years first?
Has a reigning MVP ever been traded??
I gather it would cost at least the #3 pick they just acquired. The Packers aren’t looking to draft another QB now since they just drafted Jordan Love last year.
It would cost way more than the #3 pick. Likely multiple first rounders or an equivalent player plus #3.
No surprise, this clown front office couldn’t even get that right. The Packers already drafted Love whom they…. Love. So the 3rd pick has less value than what the 49ers gave up to get the 3rd pick. They woulda had a better shot offering GB what they paid to move up in the draft. I have zero faith in Lynch/Shanahan. Passing on Mahomes for a bust so they could waste draft capital on Jimmy G only to waste a FU** ton more draft capital to replace him.
Jimmy G cost a 2nd rounder and took you to the ‘ship. The move up to #3 is surprising. I have to imagine they take a durable, high upside guy here and I think Lance looks that part. Maybe they take Lance and keep Jimmy then trade him next year? And honestly why not? Jimmy doesn’t look like he has much trade value right now anyway, so why not hold him, train Lance, if Jimmy gets hurt you’ve got a beast with similar (if not better) tools. Then if Lance proves he’s ready you move Jimmy. Jimmy’s incentive is to play well enough to keep his job on 49ers or audition for another team. 49ers create competition and have a high-upside backup if Jimmy gets hurt. Feelings might get hurt but that’s the business. If Jimmy could stay on the field this likely wouldn’t have happened. I do think giving up that extra first rounder was a bit over the top though. Maybe the move is to trade back later in the draft to stockpile more mid-round picks to address more needs. We’ll see what happens. Teams are willing to pay a premium to “get their guy” so while it may appear they likely could’ve moved to #7 and paid less to get their guy, they can basically assure they get their guy. They even said, “there’s 3 guys we’re comfortable with” so by moving up to 3 you get your guy.
Mac Jones looks like a good fit too, just not flashy, but man, that comp percentage and vision are legit.
Doubt they go Fields, it’d be interesting what happens if the Jets shock the world and don’t pick Wilson.
Rob Demovsky, Packers reporter for ESPN, reported that no call was made.
I read this title too quickly and had an absolute heart attack.
Except it never happened.
Rob Demovsky at ESPN already confirmed NOT TRUE. Funniest part is there are other rumors, also FALSE, that Packers are working on a deal with Patriots for Jordan Love. Everyone looking to generate “clicks” today. Hey, I mean while we are at it I reached out to Elizabeth Hurley but…no chance!
If San Francisco wanted they should of traded for him already.
I would love to get a bunch of picks for Love. I’d trade him in a second.
49ers don’t have the draft ammo to trade for Rodgers and subtracting from the roster isn’t ideal.
Should have offered the packers the #12 this year and rights to swap 1st rounders in 2023 2024 and 2025
2025 right to swap could be huge since the Rodgers is a free agent in 2024. Could wind up being a high pick that year.
Also gives green bay money to resign Adams and other pieces.
Shanahan and Lynch have zero plan. We’re they going to offer the #3 pick for Rodgers? LOL
yes the word was they were going to offer the Packers the number 3 pick overall for Rodgers plus a slew of other picks. And why not? I’d guarantee he’d be going(Rodgers) to the NFC Championship game with the niners come January! Guy isn’t the reigning MVP for nothing! Niners will be a force to be reckoned with if he had ended up there! Team is getting healthy with Mostert and Kittle returning and will contend.
Embarrassing trade offer. I bet the Packers extend him before the season starts for an additional 3 years.
It would start with the number 3 pick plus their next 3 first rounders plus a stud defender. But I don’t think the Packers would even do that.
Pack traded up to get Love, so if anything, I would offer him up in trade so he has a chance to actually play in the next 4 years. If it’s get a 1st and 2nd, you’d have a chance to help the team with Rodgers the next 2 years by adding young talent. They won’t let Rodgers go if he’s playing this way in 3 years. What a mess.
If they made no offer, the best title would be “considered trading” and not “tried to trade”.
