The 49ers gave up a bevy of draft picks in order to move up from No. 12 to No. 3 overall. However, with days to go before the draft, ESPN’s Mike Tannenbaum hears that the Niners have yet to reach a consensus on who they’ll take (video link).
The Niners have — or will — take a closer look at Ohio State’s Justin Fields, Alabama’s Mac Jones, and North Dakota State’s Trey Lance in the lead-up to the draft. Many prognosticators believe that Jones is the quarterback they want, but Tannenbaum hears that there’s still some debate among SF brass.
“What that says to me and what I am hearing around the league is they are not unanimous in who they want to pick, meaning [GM] John Lynch, [assistant GM] Adam Peters, and [head coach] Kyle Shanahan,” Tannenbaum said.
Even if Jones winds up as the Niners’ pick, Fields and Lance probably won’t have to wait too long to hear their names called. Between the three aforementioned passers and the presumptive top two picks (Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson), we’re expecting to see five QBs taken inside of the top 12.
Meanwhile, speculation continues to swirl around the Niners’ current starter, Jimmy Garoppolo. Although Lynch has said that Garoppolo is staying put for 2021, more than half of PFR’s readers anticipate that he’ll be traded between now and September.
Mac Jones is going to be a bust!
For the Broncos.
Dude you don’t trade up to #3 unless you know who you’re taking. You know who is going #1 and #2.
This is worse than the Bears taking Trubisky.
Was thinking the same. You don’t mortgage some of the future for something you think may help.
Yup. Could have sat and taken Horn/Farley, Parsons, or Waddle/Smith. Don’t think any of these QBs was worth what they traded, least alone the 3rd best. But bad optics.
Broncos are going to find a way to land J Fields
Can only hope.
Unless there’s a solid guarantee that Fields will certainly be better than Lock, I can’t see how this helps Denver. Not saying they won’t do it, of course. I don’t see any huge guarantee that Fields will certainly be better than Lock right now.
Ive been following the 9ers since the mid 70’s, I will respect there choice of the #3 pick, but if its Jones, they could of saved the 2 future 1st round picks, they could of stayed at 12, and let him come to them, id rather have Lance or Field
60’s for me Big D. Spurrier was the punter and#2 QB. I tend to think (and have read) there was the fear that several teams were going to trade up ahead of the niners to get a QB. Patriots being one. And all 5 QBs would have been gone. I kinda hoped they’d kept the 12th pick, and trade for Minshew to be the backup.
I don’t believe they’d be able to get Jones at #12, but they definitely didn’t have to go up to #3. I feel like some of these teams have temporarily lost their marbles this draft with these QBs, because outside of Lawrence it’s not as if the next 4 are clear franchise QBs. I guess it’s because next year’s QB crop is supposed to be weak, and they’re panicked. Not a Niner fan, but I think trading up this year was a rare mistake this year that this regime hasn’t often made. They swing and miss, it’ll hurt.
1) there’s no telling who will be the best of the bunch. History says 2 will be complete busts.
2) chances are, regardless of who the 49ers take they will end up a solid pro because they have by far and away the best situation.
3) sadly for the same reason, assuming Wilson goes #2 he will have a hard time since they have the worst team around him.
True true. If I was Zach Wilson I would rather go third instead of second I don’t care what the money difference is.
Exactly
Nostradamus says…Shanahan and Lynch come to their senses and pick Fields. He’s the number 2 QB talent in this draft and Wilson will be an injury bust that the Jets will just further torture their fans with. They should have kept Darnold and auctioned off the #2 pick for a windfall.
Bridgewater for a third or fourth would really benefit Patriots/Broncos/WFT more than a trade up and a roll of the dice for Lance at #4. Mac Jones will fall to whoever and be a serviceable qb. Chase and Pitts to Bengals and Dolphins are the real game changers who will be the All Pro position talents out of the box.
Wow, I don’t think I agreed with a single take written here LOL
I loved your post, Sam. I think your evaluations are spot on for every pick.
this isnt going to end well…
I don’t think Jones is bad just not worth the 3rd pick and not worth trading two 1st rd picks for and definitely not better than Fields or Lance IMO. If they take him I think it’ll be a big mistake and it could be the end of a great relationship between Kyle & John if Kyle is the one pushing for Mac Jones and Lynch wanted someone else but they eventually take Jone and he’s a bust, also could be the end of Kyle coaching in SF. I personally just don’t see it, can’t see them making that move for him but we will see. As a life long 49er fan I’ll support whoever it is but definitely think it would be a mistake if that’s who they go with.
I like Fields better but Lynch/Shanahan just have to find the best fit for what they want to do. If that is Fields, great. If it’s Lance, then great. Identify the best fit. Both are freakishly talented. Lance needs more development time though. I like Jones a lot but for someone like the Patriots. He seems like a good fit for that system.
I think the 49ers really made some bad choices. They gave up a Walker like bounty for a chance at some magical beans.
Have a friend who works for the 49ers. Hearing they have a trade in place
To go back into the later part of round 1 and punt of the pick.
lololololol
Why would get give up the booty they did to then trade back, especially when they badly want a QB? That’s cray cray.
My cousin in Long Beach does not believe you.
I have a friend who works for the Niners as well. They are taking Trey Lance.
BBC
I have more faith in Jimmy G. then Jones, they say that Jones reminds Kyle of Matt Ryan or Kurt Cousins, I wouldn’t give up 3 first rounder for either of the two
