Cedric Ogbuehi is heading back to Seattle. The offensive tackle is re-signing with the Seahawks, reports Mike Garafolo of NFL Network (on Twitter).
When Ogbuehi joined the Seahawks last offseason, he was expected to play a backup role for the team. However, an injury to Brandon Shell led to Ogbuehi garnering his first starts since 2017. The 28-year-old ended up seeing time in eight games (four starts) for Seattle, appearing in 26-percent of his team’s offensive snaps.
The 2015 first-round pick out of Texas A&M spent his first four seasons with the Bengals, starting 25 of his 35 games. After having his fifth-year option declined, Ogbuehi only got into two games with Cincy in 2018, and he ended up moving on to the Jaguars for the 2019 campaign.
Quarterback Russell Wilson has been clamoring for reinforcement along the offensive line, and the Seahawks have somewhat been obliging. Bob Condotta of the The Seattle Times reports (via Twitter) that Ogbuehi is now the 12th offensive lineman under contract for next season.
He wasn’t bad by any means and certainly a solid backup tackle. I’d imagine it didn’t cost all that much either.
He was bad in his first start after the Brandon Shell injury, I watched him, he looked clumsy, unsure and hesitant. He did improve on that in the next few games.
This signing is good value for money, he will provide depth and competition for Shell. As a Seahawks fan though I ask myself has this current FO just lowered my expectations on what to expect from our OL additions? I get that it must be incredibly difficult to build a huge roster with a salary cap but for once I’d love the Seahawks to bring more value to their OL. Since drafting Russell Wilson we’ve used one 1st rd pick to protect him- Ifedi. In FA we always sign cut rate players, reclamation projects or solid OL who are on the wrong side of their career arc. Can we please take our eyes off the bargain bin for once? The cheap approach to building an OL would be somewhat acceptable if the trade off is an elite Defense like we had from 2012-2015. The days of elite D are long gone though….
