New Texans GM Nick Caserio is bringing in a familiar face. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, Houston will acquire OT Marcus Cannon from the Patriots, and Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports that the two clubs will exchange draft positions in the 2021 fourth round, fifth round, and sixth round (Twitter links).
After the Pats traded for Trent Brown last week, speculation concerning Cannon’s roster spot began to pick up. Many assumed that New England would let him go in order to create $6.3MM of cap space, but the club managed to get its cap relief while also upgrading its picks in the middle rounds of next month’s draft.
As Field Yates of ESPN.com tweets, Cannon will likely be shifted to guard in Houston, as the Texans are set at right tackle with Tytus Howard. Cannon is owed $4.7MM in each of the next two seasons, so his salary isn’t prohibitive for a guard, and he did play on the interior earlier in his career.
Cannon opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19, and as Mike Reiss of ESPN.com writes, the soon-to-be 33-year-old had yet to return to New England for a physical examination/workout. Obviously, the Texans are not overly concerned about Cannon’s health at this point, and though their new acquisition showed signs of decline in 2018-19, a move back to guard could help his performance.
This is the second trade the Texans have swung today, following this morning’s deal that will send inside linebacker Benardrick McKinney to Miami in exchange for edge defender Shaq Lawson. And according to Dianna Russini of ESPN.com (via Twitter), LB Whitney Mercilus might also be on his way out of Houston.
That’s 3 pretty good swaps in draft picks this year for the Pats if I’m not mistaken.
It’s 12 spots in each round. According to draft pick value charts, the pick swaps total value amounts to 46 points. That would be the equivalent of the 2nd to last pick of the 4th round pick. It’s safe to assume that the Pats would have also accepted Houston’s 5th round choice. it seems like the Texans did ok to not further deplete their draft capital, at least by pure numbers, and instead opting for day 3 swaps
Considering the Pats were going to release him and get nothing for Cannon, I think this is a very good deal for them.
Obviously. Getting anything of value for a soon to be released player is a win. Just trying to provide some value perspective on the return.
I can’t stand you damn sports geeks draft points what are you on thats the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen on a sports site they moved 12 spots each round that’s it no points nothing just a sooner pick
Considering your inability to grasp punctuation, it’s no surprise that statistics gives you fits.
Ooo your one of those clowns get a life instead of correct idiots like me when I don’t care and 75% of other people don’t either you get what I’m saying in not writing a school paper just a comment
You must be the tool that puts all that crap in yr text also news flash no ones paying attention
Hahahah, you are a trip my guy. You came at me calling me a sports geek. Get some thicker skin before taking shots pew pew pew
This was a hilarious thread. Thank you, I give no fox lol
Punctuation, it really can be your friend.
So if those combined pick swaps were close to 5th round pick then could you say the Pats netted out trading Marcus Cannon for Trent Brown and a 7th round pick this off-season?
Hi Rory,
Can you remove of the word ‘that’? You put ‘that’ twice in the sentence? Please & thank you.
“This is the second trade that that Texans have swung today, following this morning’s deal that sent inside linebacker Benardrick McKinney to Miami in exchange for edge defender Shaq Lawson”.
Shut up you dbag. Your prolly scum in real life. Ppl make mistakes. Apparently you never have mr perfect. Go suck a fat one n like to your wife about it. I’m so sick of ppl calling the writers out for grammatical errors. Ppl make mistakes in life all the time. Like wtf

Best part of sportsfan101’s response: all the grammatical errors.
* “You’re” and not “Your” (amongst others)
It’s really not that that big of a deal bro
Even with the Texans depleted draft capital at the top end of the 2021 draft, why would a GM commit to a swap of lower level draft choices to spend in excess of 9MM over the next 2 years? In addition, Cannon would probably be released by the Patriots for salary cap savings and could have been had at a much lower cost as a free agent. Further, this new addition does not fill a position of need and will be asked to change positions to “fit” onto the Texans lineup.
Either:
Nick Caserio isn’t as sharp as everyone thinks he is
OR
This is an “under the radar” payback to the Patriots for letting Caserio take the GM job in Houston
OR
Marcus Cannon is one heck of a locker room guy
OR
We need to wait for the next shoe to drop as this is but the first transaction in a series of yet to be finalized moves – perhaps involving Tytus Howard ?
Because chances are he wouldn’t have signed with Houston unless they traded for him. They had to trade for him. It will be that way with the Texans for a while, either pay the most or you have to trade for someone. BOB really did a number on that franchise.
SO??
Cannon is a RT who will be playing out of position at RG with the Texans.
BIG WHOOP !!
Had he become a free agent, either he signs with Houston or he doesn’t sign.
There are other means available to add a RT: the draft, UDFA, free agents, trade.
I agree, it seems unnecessary for Houston, but I suppose Caserio really liked Cannon and wanted a veteran presence that he knew on the line. The upside is obvious for NE as they were going to get nothing for him anyway.
Houston didn’t give up much, though. Moving back on Day three is not the worst thing to give up at the end of the day, even if it seems slightly unnecessary as opposing to drafting someone. I guess Caserio wanted to use a selection on a starting guard, but now he gets to have the same number of picks while getting someone who can do that (with value at tackle as well).
