The Patriots will sign tight end Hunter Henry to a three-year, $37.5MM deal, according to ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter (on Twitter). The former Chargers tight end will receive $25MM guaranteed as a part of the deal.
Henry will join the newly-acquired Jonnu Smith, giving the Patriots the top two tight ends in free agency. Together, they’ll help to fill the long-standing void left by Rob Gronkowski‘s departure.
Henry missed the entire 2018 campaign with a torn ACL, and although he’s played at least 12 games in his other four seasons, he’s also never played a full 16. Still, the Chargers’ decision to let Henry test the open market came as a surprise. This past season he had 60 catches for 613 yards and four touchdowns in 14 games. The tag would have cost them ~$13MM for one year.
The Patriots revamped offense will also feature former 49ers receiver Kendrick Bourne and ex-Raiders WR Nelson Agholor.
Going all out to help Cam this year. No excuses.
That’s a lot of money invested into tight ends
Makes sense though, not a bad move.
If history tells us anything, one of these guys is going to be amazing and have a huge career, the other one will be convicted of murder.
Well which one is which? Don’t leave us hanging
Nice one
HH is actually a serial killer
Lol, but it was only one. At least , until the cops did some looking around
Money’s on Hunter. Shows too much gumline when he smiles and is from Arkansas. Then again, Smith attended college in Florida…
Hahahahaha
That’s awesome! I

Lol
hey cap space
Damn, the Pats aren’t messing around.
Huh. I thought the Pats were good with Jonnu. It’ll be interesting to watch their season play out this year.
All they need now is a QB who can throw the ball.
He completed 66% of his passes, albeit short yardage. 2nd year WITH an offseason program, much improved defense and all these receivers and TE’s at his disposal. Oh ya, he can still run quite well, over 4YPC. Not saying he will win the Super Bowl, not saying he will be MVP but, to your comment, Cam CAN throw quite well. My prediction: 4000 passing yards/600 rush yards/35 total TD.
I think Cam will definitely do better, but those stats are way too high. I think it will be like the 49ers from 2 years ago where the defense and run game gets them wins and the QB just makes plays when he has to.
They have committed 80M to the passing game in the last 24 hours…they will run the ball yes, but to imply a run first scheme after the aforementioned moves in laughable.
Smallball –
Care to wager on those numbers?
YES!! Do you want my email to iron out the details?
Cam can still be a good player, but even the Patriots aren’t all in on him. His contract has a low base value and is heavy on incentives, so it’s not even a sure thing that he starts. He probably will and he should if the alternative is Stidham, but they have a higher pick than usual to draft someone and they know that at the very least he’d be a great backup.
Realistically, if he starts for close to a full season I’d expect 3200 passing yards, 25 total TDs and 12-15 picks. Not bad numbers, but your projections seem pretty high.
You’re implying Henry, Smith, Agholor and Bourne collectively will only add 400 yards and 5 TD’s from last years totals? Ok guy.
That’s exactly what I’m implying. You seem to get defensive and take it personally when anyone else is criticizing Cam, but I’m sticking with what I said.
Cam has thrown for more than 3900 yards ONCE in his entire career, and that was back in his rookie year. He’s thrown for more than 24 touchdowns once, and that was in his MVP season almost six years ago. He’s never even come close to that amount of TD passes any other year in his career.
Cam’s style just isn’t to throw for 4000 yards. That’s not his game. It wasn’t in his prime, and it certainly won’t be when he’s on the wrong side of 30 with an improving but still flawed supporting cast. Agholor and Bourne are fine complementary players and a lot of teams would like to have them, but if they’re your top options then you’re in trouble. They’re both niche players. Smith and Henry are fine too, but I’d be surprised if either of them tops 700 yards.
This just seems like a case of you drastically overestimating what Cam will do.
As a Pats fan, trust me I’ve criticized him plenty! I don’t take it personally at all, maybe its just you?
You are cherry picking his stats, yes he has only thrown over 3900 once and over 24 pass TD’s once but, two other seasons he was within 70 yards of 3900 and also threw for exactly 24TDs two other seasons as well. And, had he not missed the last two games of 2018, he would finished around 3900 yards and 28 TD’s. Cam had some really really good seasons throwing to no one besides Olson, unless you consider Cotchery a lethal target. Also, his completion % was the second highest of his career last year, again throwing to no one.
Maybe my projections are a little advantageous but, second season with a training camp, loaded defense, great coaching, solid o-line and some legit weapons to throw to, I would bet I’m not to far off.
This seems like a case of you drastically not understanding anything but what the stat lines tell you.
From the most irrelevant professional sports team in America led by the incompetent Spanos TrustFund No Fun bunch to the champion Patriots led by Belichick. HUGE upgrade for Hunter Henry!
Exactly. The Patriots are known for fun.
Patriots on a spending spree. I guess missing the playoffs really pissed them off. And they aren’t making bad signings either. Only thing i thought was bad was i think they over spent on Judon but other then that they have been killing it.
I would say it this way…
Tom Brady winning the Super Bowl while the Patriots missed the playoffs really pissed off Belichick.
Belichick’s dander is clearly up and this is his reaction. He heard everyone saying that Brady was the real reason the Patriots won all those Super Bowls and he’s pissed.
I’m from Baltimore.. you might only get 8 sacks but QB pressures and a lot of tackles are included.. He has a knack for getting to plays.. he will be most valuable signing on the team. Judon is a great if not spectacular or flashy guy.. Surprised Ravens didn’t give him the 14 mill per year he got
Took a quick look at his advanced stats over at Pro Football Reference. Nice pressure rate (snaps divided by pressures), and it improved last year over 2019, and he cut his missed tackles rate, too, almost in half.

Wow I’ve got a completely different take. In my opinion they’ve overpaid for almost everyone they’ve signed and Judon was their best signing up to that point.
You must be a Jets fan
Damn damn damn.
Gilmore, 1st rounder – move up to take their QB?
Eagles might take that deal.
According to draft chart Patriots would need to trade their 1, 2, and 3 to move up to Philly slot for equivalent value. Would a rebuilding Philly prefer one year of an unhappy aging cornerback coming off a mediocre season and wanting a bigger paycheck or the 2 and the 3?
I agree and would do that all day long.
Not saying this is a terrible deal but it a risky one for a guy who had some health issues in the past
Belkichek is hellbent on winning with cam after watching Brady win a superbowl without him.
Pride before the fall.
Patriots should’ve gone with Dalton if they wanted a veteran QB to give weapons to.
Sweet. Chargers can go up and get Pitts. Herbert and Pitts will be like Fouts and Winslow
Am I the only one that’s shocked that they haven’t re-signed White and Andrews I also thought they would bring back Guy and/or Butler on the D-line
