Though the Vikings wanted to keep RB Mike Boone in the fold, it seems they will be unable to do so. Per Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press (via Twitter), Boone is prepared to sign elsewhere.
Minnesota non-tendered Boone this afternoon, thereby making him an unrestricted free agent. The club had hoped that it would be able to re-sign the former UDFA to a contract worth less money than an RFA tender, but Boone is seeking greener pastures.
It’s hard to blame him. The Vikings have Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison ahead of Boone on the depth chart, so he would have again been relegated to the team’s RB3 post. He has done well in that role, with a 5.3 YPC average and four TDs over his first three pro seasons, but he has only managed 71 career carries (including just 11 last year).
Per Tomasson, Boone is looking for a team that will give him a chance to be an RB2. He may have to wait until the dust settles on the first wave of free agency, but he should get that opportunity.
This makes sense for him. He deserves a shot at playing more snaps than he could possibly get behind a healthy Cook and Mattison.
I hope the Vikes to resign Ameer Abdullah. He’s been a useful 3rd down back, special teams gunner and kick-off returner.
Boone is fine, but would be RB3 in GB also, so try again. Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press either forgot about or is trolling the heck out of Dillon.
Hey Rory…the Packers have a guy named AJ Dillon as their RB2. Mike Boone would not be RB2 in GB.
I was just going to say the same thing! How is this guy forgetting about Dillon?
I also think they kept Patrick Taylor Jr out of Memphis because they like him alot too. Green Bay does not need RBs, they could use a couple Wide Recievers though.
He would be nice fit behind Josh Jacobs.. too bad Texans love old RB he could really do some damage with extra touches
At least unless there are no RB2 opportunities for him elsewhere and/or no other team interested in his services as even a RB3. Then his agent will be calling Rick.
Rick Sanchez?
“Trader” Rick Spielman, GM of the Vikings.
Perfect for the Eagles. Absolutely perfect. Oh, I forgot, the checkbook has a zero balance.
Where in the article does it mention Green Bay? Or was that edited out? I’m confused.
It originally did mention Green Bay as a possible destination for Boone until it was pointed out to the author that the Packers have Dillon as RB2.
Good guy. Hope he gets some reps with a new team. Gets a chance to show his talent.
I was really hoping that the Vikings were going to trade Mattison to the Texans, then have Boone as their #2. Time to do that still, but needs to be done now.
