Following the Jared Goff/Matthew Stafford trade, the Lions quarterback depth chart is already going to look a whole lot different in 2021. Based on some recent comments from general manager Brad Holmes, it might not just be the top of the depth chart that’ll see changes. During an appearance on the Huddle and Flow podcast, the executive noted that the team will definitely consider drafting a quarterback, even with the seventh-overall pick.
“I don’t think when you’re picking this high that you can be ‘out’ on any position,” Holmes said. “But obviously, quarterback is such an important position and I just think it’s good drafting business, always, to be very, very thorough on that quarterback class – regardless of what your situation is. When I was with the Rams, I always said, regardless of what you have at quarterback [you have to be thorough], and especially now, it’s the same approach. It is a good crop coming out this year, but it’s definitely not a position that will be ignored by us by any means.”
This isn’t a massive surprise. After all, Goff has underwhelmed over the past two seasons, and the quarterback obviously wasn’t the main asset acquired in the Stafford deal (that honor belongs to the pair of future first-rounders). However, the team still has at least two (pricey) years of Goff, so they can take a patient approach at the position knowing Goff will probably be under center for at least 2021.
We leaned earlier this week that even the Lions’ backup quarterbacks aren’t safe. The front office has reportedly had trade discussions with teams about backup Chase Daniel.
Will Goff whine and moan like Wentz did if they use a high pick on a QB?
No. Like any real man, he will simply turn his head and Goff.
Wentz didn’t whine at all about the Birds drafting Hurts and he was smart to request a trade, Philly is going to be trash for the next 3 years until good ol Howie gets out salary cap hell. Wentz is in a far better position playing behind one of the most consistently healthy o lines in football with solid weapons around him.
He was a MVP candidate under Frankie, I’m looking forward to seeing him bounce back in a big way.
Can you please give examples where Wentz “whined and moaned”?
The eagles were dumb to draft hurts. They also have not drafted well in many many years.
They have given money to older non dependable players.
Also, if at your job your boss brought in a younger cheaper employee who does the same job as you as your potential replacement, would you feel supported and wanted? No you wouldn’t, you would look elsewhere.
Who ever gets drafted there is in trouble with the Clown Coach they have hired.
That was Patricia. Campbell at least has the players respect.
Yep it is has been calling Campbell a clown since the hiring. He has yet to tell us why, but he has been very consistent with telling us on every article mentioning his name or that of his new team.
Yep it is is probably Matt Patricia’s account. Only reason for all the negativity.
Campbell is a player’s couch. He’ll do a good job.
The Lions don’t seem to be serious about ever fielding a winning team. They don’t even know how to talk the talk, never mind walk the walk. They should be more like the Bears, i.e., at least acknowledge where your problems lie, even if you have no clue how to address them.
When you want to trade out of the 7th spot for a bunch of high picks you convince people you’ll take the QB they want. That was Quinn’s problem last year. Nobody believed he’d take Tau so Miami didn’t trade up.
One of the most unexpected shocking trades I’ve seen in my lifetime. The Rams aren’t worrying about the future right now it’s all about the present. I guess I can’t say that I blame them. They are stacked especially on defense and Goff couldn’t even be a game manager qb he was a turnover machine. Perfect move for the Lions too. They aren’t winning anything anytime soon and Stafford would be at the very least at the twilight of his career by the time they rebuilt that team. They took on salary they weren’t going to spend in free agency to get 2 first rounders. Then they can dump Goff in 2 years. That’s a good start to a rebuild. I know the Rams got a first rounder from Houston for Cooks(another BOB bonehead deal)but when do they have their next first round pick. They gave up two for Ramsey as well. I think the Rams have a very legit shot this year but they better draft well outside of the first round or they could have a very long rebuild coming themselves
I think O’Brien dealt a second rounder for Cooks. If I remember right, it was the one received in the Hopkins trade.
The usual suspects telling us all how the Lions should be run.
Why would you have traded for Goff if you aren’t going to start him? Could’ve had first round draft picks that were higher up the board had you traded Stafford to a different team.
I doubt it. Taking on Goff’s deal probably netted them more for Stafford rather than less.
You are 100% correct, Bencole. Stafford alone would have netted one, first round pick at the most (see Carolina’s offer). Since Detroit took on the full (underwater) Goff contract, they ‘bought’ another first rounder and 3rd rounder by doing so.
You can pretty much ignore anything a GM says about the draft at this time of year because 90% of it is just a smoke screen.
100% true-or at least it is for competent GMs. What do they get more from-telling the media their thoughts, or putting together a successful roster? I know they have to ask and we’re interested in hearing it, but GM speak is and should be near worthless.
