The financial details of the Patriots’ new deal with Cam Newton make it clear that New England is leaving its options open with respect to the quarterback position, and the Jimmy Garoppolo rumblings continue to persist. In a recent appearance on the PFT PM podcast, Tom Curran of NBC Sports Boston said a New England-Garoppolo reunion remains a possibility even after the Newton re-up (via Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk).
Of course, the 49ers would need to make Garoppolo available via trade, and that situation is a little murky. San Francisco GM John Lynch said last month that he had no doubt Garoppolo would be his starting QB in 2021, but just a few days later, a report surfaced indicating that Jimmy G was still on the trade block.
According to Florio, the Niners continue to seek an upgrade, and if they find one, obviously Garoppolo would stand to be dealt. Though he would need to waive his no-trade clause, that probably wouldn’t be a problem if San Francisco brings in, or is planning to bring in, a player that could pose a threat to his starting job.
As Mike Reiss of ESPN.com points out, getting a legitimate quarterback under contract was key for the Patriots with free agency opening this week. Although there are plenty who believe Newton is simply not a viable starter anymore, he is still a beloved figure among players, and the Pats — who have among the most salary cap space in the league — figure to be active players in the market. The club has been connected to some of the top receivers and tight ends available, and those players would probably not even consider Foxborough if Jarrett Stidham was the only passer on the roster. So while the Newton deal doesn’t assure him of anything, it needed to be done.
For his part, Newton expects to take a major step forward in 2021 if given the opportunity. He recently posted a hype video to Instagram promising a return to form next season, and depending on how things shake out in free agency and the draft, he just might get that chance. If nothing else, the fact that the Pats brought him back suggests that the team believes he could look more like his old self with a better complement of weapons surrounding him.
Exactly NONE of the top receivers and TEs available in FA are going to go to NE to play with Cam Newton.
They will if their paid. And considering many teams don’t have the cap space .
Some might, that’s true. Others (most?) want a chance to win. With Cam as QB1, that’s not going to be in NE.
They have the 2nd most cap room, there’s always someone.. The Cam Newton idiocy in the media just keeps people confused; he ain’t it and NE will get what it needs – there’s a lot of time still.
He won’t look like his old self. He will like like himself, only much older.
Only way I see jimmy g going to the pats if it a 3 team trade where a team like the jets give the 49ers a QB
Jets:
Recieve late 2 2nd rounders one from each team
Niners:
Darnold (still young and can cut bait after the season, still save money in deal as well can fill holes in free agency)
Pats:
Jimmy G (take on full contract starts over Newton )
I think it’s more likely we see a 3 team Jets trade involving Darnold to Seattle, and R. Wilson to a 3rd team. I just don’t see how the Jets would be willing to trade with the Patriots.
I’m out of these deals if the Jets are not getting an established QB here because I don’t have any confidence in any of the QBs available at #2 to do any better than Sam with comparable support to what he had last year. I think Sam can thrive with a 49ers style offense if you give him Sewell at#2.
Unless the Niners can get Watson without giving up Bosa, Jimmy will be the QB next year. Nothing else makes any sense, as the rest of the available quarter backs would only be a lateral move.
And we all know laterals are technically fumbles.
Maybe they clone Joe Montana from a hail follicle and technology that the grey aliens let them borrow, name him Jo Jo Dunbar and NE is the only team that will every Super Bowl forever…. hahaha
Mike Florio is a weasel
That’s putting it mildly.
Agree 100%. He hasn’t been interesting in years!
Totally agree! He was a lawyer I believe, what did we expect? Hahaha
I’ll personally throw in cash and pick up Jimmy from Logan, free of charge, to help get him back in New England
Lynch is just a terrible GM. How long does it take to decide if Jimmy is your guy or not? The 49ers should have been able to make that determination within a couple of months of their SB appearance.
I fail to see how an unsupported opinion from a Boston writer constitutes a “rumor” that Garoppolo is still on the trading block.
As for Newton returning to form, anyone familiar with Newton’s career knows that his “usual” season from a passing standpoint is about 20 TDs with 11 Interceptions – which “usually” places him solidly in the bottom half of the league. Perhaps Patriots fans think that will be enough to return them to the Super Bowl, but no one else does.
If his mechanics are corrected and he’s built more strength in his shoulder (had surgeries on them) I agree.. He was averaging around 3500 yards/24TD throwing and 550ish Rushing with just over 7TD’s per season on average (taking out the 2 game season in 2019). I was pointing this out to someone earlier and think it’s possible too.
There’s always a chance
Mile high, trust me Pats fans do NOT want Cam. Personally, I would rather see Stidham play versus that stiff. But for BB, appearances matter to other players. One can only hope for Jimmy G.
3-team trade possibility? If the 49ers get Watson, decide to trade Jimmy G back to the Patriots, Houston gets 1st round picks from 49ers and Patriots. Throw in a couple of mid round picks to get the deal done.
4thin, if I’m GM. LETS DO THIS.
