Ifeadi Odenigbo is heading to the Big Apple. The defensive lineman is signing with the Giants, according to his agency on Twitter. It’s a one-year pact for Odenigbo. The deal is worth $2.5MM, according to NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero (on Twitter).
After bouncing around the NFL a bit to start his career, Odenigbo broke onto the scene in 2019 with the Vikings. The defensive lineman ultimately finished the campaign having compiled 23 tackles, seven sacks, and one forced fumble despite appearing in only 34 percent of his team’s defensive snaps.
The 26-year-old took on a starting role in 2020, compiling 35 tackles and 3.5 sacks in 15 games (15 starts). Despite his starting role, he was non-tendered by Minnesota earlier this week.
Now, Odenigbo will enjoy a bit of a homecoming with his new squad. The defensive lineman was born in Bayonne, New Jersey, about a 20-minute drive from MetLife Stadium.
Marginal moves like usual
But it’s always nice to have depth, and rotational pieces.
So is this because Tomlinson left. You take my guy I’ll take yours.
Depth and rotational pieces? This is to replace a starter that they let walk (Tomlinson) and it is a slight downgrade.
He’s not replacing Tomlinson… He’s an DE/Edge type… Tomlinson was a NT… For the money, not a bad move. You have to keep in mind that because the salary cap didn’t really go up like every team originally planned for with previous offseasons, they don’t have much money to work with.
Give me tackles and sacks for Tomlinson last year. I’ll give it to you. 25 tackles, 3.5 sacks. This guy had 35 tackles and 3.5 sacks for 8.5 million less.
Good player, not great. Not a Pro Bowler or All-Pro. Solid. This guy is solid.
I don’t hate the move. Although we couldn’t find 22 million to resign Tomlinson? Big loss and for less money than I thought he would get.
Exactly. Among all of his other faults, Gettleman doesn’t seem to be very adept at maneuvering within the cap.
To be fair, the salary cap has increased no less than $10M a year for the past several years, and team’s financial roadmaps take that into consideration…covid unexpectedly really killed a lot of team’s finances/available cap room this offseason. Instead of going up $10+m it went down something like $15m. That’s unprecedented.
All 32 teams are in the same boat and most seem to be doing a much better job of it this offseason than the Giants. Not an excuse.
It’s obvious Gettleman can’t win here.. lol
I don’t like him much but for a guy who’s against the cap with tons holes he’s not doing a horrible job so far is off season IMO
Uhh, who put them up ‘against the cap’, only to field a horrible team? Gettleman got them into this situation, he’s entirely to blame.
by the way, other teams have worse situations cap-wise but the Giants’ offseason has been pretty terrible.
We were warned by the players
giants stink
Odenigbo is a complimentary player that I’ve compared to long-time Vikings starter Brian Robison. Put him on a four-man line with a Josh Allen or Everson Griffen on the other side and a good pass rushing DT inside, and Odenigbo can get you eight or nine sacks per season. Last year, he played with Yannick Ngakoue for six games, and no one else you’ve ever heard of on the DL for the rest of the season. Ngakoue went to the Ravens, and played alongside Matt Judon and Calais Campbell, and the year before, with the Jags, played alongside Campbell and 2019 1st rounder Josh Allen. Based on the numbers below, I think Giants fans will be pleasantly surprised, and Raiders fans pretty underwhelmed:
Ifeadi Odenigbo
2019 (with Danielle Hunter and Everson Griffen):
368 D snaps, 7 sacks, 18 pressures (1 per 20.4 snaps)
2020 (w/out Hunter & Griffen, w/ Yannick Ngakoue for six games; per ESPN, the fifth MOST double-teamed edge rusher):
696 D snaps, 3.5 sacks, 26 pressures (1 per 26.8 snaps)
2021: 1 year, $2.5 million
Yannick Ngakoue
2019 (w/ Allen, Campbell and Dawaune Swoot):
790 D snaps, 8 sacks, 27 pressures (1 per 29.3 snaps)
2020 (w/ Odenigbo for six games, and Judon and Campbell for 10; per ESPN, the LEAST double-teamed edge rusher):
658 D snaps, 8 sacks, 26 pressures (1 per 25.3 snaps)
2021: 2 years, $26 million
