One of the biggest names on the free agent market has been officially scooped up. The Giants will sign cornerback Adoree’ Jackson, sources told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network (Twitter link).
It’s a three-year deal worth a whopping $39MM, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets. The contract comes with a signing bonus of $13.5MM, full guarantees of $26.5MM, and incentives can bring the total value up to $44.5MM, Schefter tweets. It’s the culmination of a several days long courtship that saw the Giants go all-out in their recruitment. Jackson was also scheduled to meet with the Eagles later this week, but he’ll be canceling that now.
Jackson was cut by the Titans last week before the fifth-year option on his rookie contract became guaranteed. He had been set to cost Tennessee $10.2MM under that fifth-year option, so his release actually ended up getting him a raise as his new pact has an AAV of $13MM. A number of other teams reportedly showed interest, including the Rams, Chiefs, Raiders, and Cardinals.
Giants GM Dave Gettleman, whose job status beyond 2021 is tenuous at best, has been aggressive in what could be his final free agency if things don’t go well this season. The team just committed a large contract to Kenny Golladay over the weekend.
As many Giants writers were quick to point out, this signing likely means that even more contract restructures are coming to clear space. Jackson, a USC product, was drafted 18th overall in 2017. He became a starter as a rookie with the Titans, and also returned punts his first two years.
This past season, a knee injury limited him to only three games. Jackson only has two interceptions in 46 career games, but does have 33 passes defended. He’s played well at times and struggled at others, but is capable of being a very solid player. He’s still only 25, and will slot in opposite James Bradberry at corner for the Giants.
Gettleman playing like he’s gonna exit stage left at he end of the year.
Sad when u gotta overpay guys to get them to come play for you.. dude was cut making less than $13mill .. f’n Gettleman
And was set to visit Philly right after this visit so the Gints panicked and overpaid.
Another Titans 1st round pick tossed aside
eagles really wanted him, so did I. the Giants have made some good moves this off-season. john ross, Kyle rudolph, Kenny golladay, and now jackson?? golladay is the biggest, but I think Kyle rudolph will have huge impact replacing even engram
He’s not replacing him… At least not yet…Engram is still on the to ran and under contract this year
You consider John Ross a good move?
Giants overpaid well hope he does well and plays all 17 games.
It’s an overpay, but at $26m guaranteed they can get out of it after 2 years.
easy with the great moves bro… this one is ok little over pay but ok, KG HAS TO stay healthy, 5-6 games a year just won’t cut it.
Holy…depressing group here. Giants got starting young CB because Titans were capped out not because he isn’t a very good player. Giants now have a GREAT and deep secondary!
We needed the big WR we got him. We needed speed we paid nothing for Ross who is young and fast. We got a DE who had more tackles and as many sacks as Dalvin for 25% of the cost. I didn’t get Booker and Rudolph but Booker seems like pass catcher who can block.
Now finish the OL and DL and let’s win the East.
Rudolph doesn’t count much against the cap, and they can cut him after next year if need be. He is a good redzone threat still and doesn’t drop balls like Engram. Giants have been a terrible redzone offense the last few years so adding him plus Golladay should help. I’d really like Oline and a true Edge rusher in the draft. Adding Golladay and Adore gives them more flexibility in the draft. They can take best available or even trade back (if one of the QB’s are still on the board), and acquire a 2nd or a 3rd.
This!!!!
Welcome to the happy train.
Thank you seriously with all my heart.
THANK YOU!!!!!
I’m not a fan Getteman but I think he has done well so far this off-season
I’m glad someone got off the “Everything Sucks” Ship and said so.
Geez never realized how many Giants fans sound exactly like Mets fans…lol
Well said!!!!
Thanks. I’m not a huge Getty fan either but this offseason I have to give him credit. All the contracts he dished out are short term as far as the guaranteed money. He was able to keep it all under the cap and next year and the year after when the cap should go up it will give them an opportunity to resign Barkley and Peppers. With Jones and Barkley still on the rookie contracts now was the time to do this.
I’m not a fan of Gettleman’s, but he did a decent enough job this offseason with free agents. I would still like a WR in the first round (depending on who’s still left, obviously), but Gettleman’s moves have given the Giants some flexibility. They can basically take the best player available aside from QB, RB, TE (unless Pitts is there; I’d take him then try trading Engram for a 4th rounder or something).
I didn’t know the Giants had all this cap space. Why didn’t they sign any pass rushers or OL help
They tried signing Leonard Floyd but missed.
They just about hit every other target.
Making big moves to attempt to secure 2nd in the division
I like the move needed a CB to play with Bradberry. I also like Ruldolph, Engram is a stat piler when game doesn’t matter. If Getty would have resigned Tomlinson I would have been very happy, but so far off-season is a B+.
Yeah, I have to agree. Not resigning Tomlinson kind of hurts, but I doubt if they make either of the Gollaway or Jackson deals if they gave Tomlinson what he wanted, and I think there is much more potential upside this way. I know a lot of fans are down on Daniel Jones, but I think he still has a great shot at being a better than average play caller for the G-men. I remember how much improved in the Giants offense when they brought in Plaxico Burress. Having that big receiver can open up things all over the offense. I’ve actually been happier with Gettleman than lots of Giants fans. I think his biggest mistake was taking Barkley instead of a quarterback. It’s not that Barkley’s not a good player,it’s just that running backs aren’t a high value position any more. They are a dime a dozen frankly.
I remember how down people were on
Eli going into his 3rd season.
So we will see.
