The Eagles want a third or fourth-round pick for Zach Ertz, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL.com (Twitter link). Meanwhile, the Birds continue to insist that they won’t release the tight end.
Ertz wants to stay with the Eagles, despite clashing with GM Howie Roseman in the midst of extension talks. In turn, the Eagles pondered trading him before the 2020 deadline. Then, Ertz’s ankle injury brought those discussions to a halt.
Now, at the age of 30, Ertz is a year removed from his usual fine work. He finished 2020 with just 36 catches for 335 yards and one touchdown. But, in 2019, he notched 88 receptions for 916 yards and six TDs. And, in 2018, he earned All-Pro honors, cementing himself as one of the league’s very best TEs. There should be plenty of interest in Ertz, though teams know that the Eagles are in something of a bind. He’s got one year left on his current deal, counting $12.4MM against the books. Trading or cutting him would save the Eagles almost $5MM in cap space and they need all of the breathing room they can get.
For his part, Ertz is growing “increasingly impatient” as things drag on, according to Pelissero. One way or another, it sounds like there will be a resolution before the end of the week.
Guy is washed.
??? No, his QB SUCKED last year.
I have a bad feeling that he’s going to replace Hunter Henry on the Chargers
I think so too but likely for a 5th/6th rounder at best. Eagles are just posturing to get something
For $12mill no team is giving that draft pick..
He would count $8.5M against any acquiring team’s cap
They should be happy with a conditional 7th on that contract
I think you could give Howie a 3rd or 4th rd pick with a fair bit of confidence that he wouldn’t actually know how to use it effectively.
Yeah, just like they wanted two 1st Round Draft Picks for Wentz. Postering at best , wishful thinking by Roseman.
Roseman is clearly a fool
If I’m Steelers I’m cutting Eric Ebron and saving the 6-8 million in cap end the money the eagles would consume would offset almost or save us some cap still and offer Philly a 2022 4th and 2022 7 for Ertz. Dude is literally one season off but being more dynamic of a TE, over the past 6 years but other then 2020 his worst season was 58 702 3 tds and his best was 116 1163 8 TDs. Everyone acting like he hasn’t been good for 4 years.
Pats could pay that price
It’s what they should ask for.And if they can’t get it,restructure and keep him.Going by overthecap, they save the same either way.If they seriously wanna try to win with Hurts, keeping the 2 tight ends wouldn’t hurt. With the exception of drafting Pitts, they’ll certainly have a hard time finding a better replacement. And anyone they take beyond the 4th likely won’t offer much beyond depth.I don’t think they should accept anything beyond the top of the 4th.
Why would he restructure?
He has said that he didn’t wanna leave Philly.I know negotiations on a new deal broke down, but so did his production. He’ll probably be restructuring wherever he gets traded to anyway.Either that or renegotiating a new deal, coming off a down season.
Pats / Colts / Chargers and Bengals could all afford (cap) him and would get a known return for a 4th… easy decision IMO
Chris Ballard reels in Howie again, offering a 6th. No one else makes a concrete offer ( sound familiar?); then Ballard gives him a short deadline to accept the trade or its off the table. What’s Howie going to do? Blink? Ballard won’t. Ertz will be a Colt.
Wanting and getting are two entirely different things.
Right Howie ?
Lions: WE’LL GIVE YOU OUR NEXT 3 FIRST ROUND PICKS, FINAL OFFER!
Lions are DUMB. I bet Jarred Goff goes off and Matthew Stafford gets injured. I’m rooting for Dan Campbell as a coach.
Lions –
How much did you want to bet? I’m in.
3rd or 4th? Right.
Good luck with that, Philly. This is the same team that wanted a couple first round picks for Carson Wentz though, so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised.
Philly shouldn’t be surprised either if no one meets that price when it’s well known that they don’t even want the guy and he’s making a lot of money. They should have used him a lot more last year if they were hoping for a 3rd round pick.
Agreed. They maybe could have gotten a fourth or possibly even a third from a needy team last year when Ertz’s debacle was the only outwardly visible problem in Philly. After the team’s awful season this past year and Goedert looking like the only competent receiver before his injury, Ertz looks much less valuable and much more discontent. Any team trading for him is not trading for last season’s production, which makes him less valuable. I know the Eagles didn’t think that this year would be so bad, but they should have explored a trade before last season when Ertz had a fourth or possibly third round value and was unhappy with his deal.
Ravens need to get back to that 2 tight end set Andrew’s and ertz babyyyyyy let’s make it happen
Ertz will have to improve his blocking to make that happen. Hurst was a good blocker, and was definitely behind Andrews in terms of targeting priority. Ertz will not leapfrog Andrews there, which is his main strength, and the Ravens don’t throw it enough to need two receiving-focused tight ends.
Just think of the great talent Howie would snag with this 3rd, a LB coming off an ACL injury who will be put on IR all season, a punter to compete in camp, a DB they’re converting to LB, a KR that will get stashed on the Practice Squad…the options are unlimited!
