The quarterback market is really starting to heat up now. Just moments after news broke about Andy Dalton signing with the Bears, we’ve got word of Jacoby Brissett‘s next destination.
Brissett will be signing a one-year contract with the Dolphins, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets. The former Patriots and Colts quarterback will sign for a guaranteed $5MM, according to the Boston Globe’s Ben Volin (on Twitter). The deal can max out at $7MM.
Ryan Fitzpatrick left for Washington last night, and Miami wasted no time in finding their new veteran backup for Tua Tagovailoa. After all the controversy last season from the Fitz/Tua flips that Brian Flores initiated, it’s a little eyebrow-raising to see them go with another high profile player behind Tagovailoa.
If Tua falters in his second season, Flores will once again have another player with lots of starting experience waiting in the wings behind him. The Dolphins have sought to establish themselves as committed to Tagovailoa ever since the season ended, amid lots of speculation that they’d try to make a move for Deshaun Watson.
Brissett’s time in Indy came to an end with the Colts trading for Carson Wentz earlier this offseason. After a shoulder injury to Andrew Luck in 2017, the Colts traded with the Patriots for Brissett and he started 15 games for them that year. In 2018 he backed up Luck but after Luck’s sudden retirement, he again started 15 games for them in 2019.
His play in 2019 was subpar, causing the Colts to go out and sign Philip Rivers last offseason, once again relegating Brissett to clipboard-holding duties. In his last season as the starter he had 18 touchdowns and only six interceptions, but averaged just 6.6 yards per attempt as he was often too conservative with the ball and failed to push it down the field.
Maybe they aren’t trading for Watson then. Why would you sign Brissett who is a career back up/starter if your trying to get a top 5 QB. This means they must be rolling with Tua but feel worried still with him
Bringing in brissett means he will back EITHER Tua or Watson.
Fins would be all over Watson once Houston makes him available which after signing Tyrod to 12.5 milly this year it seems to inevitable now that Watson is gonzo
Why sign Brissett if your going after Watson makes no sense? You could get a back up to Watson for peanuts and have spent that money upgrading in other areas.
Watson or tua get hurt? Then what? Season is over and wait till next year?
I mean look at Brady, Wilson, Niners, Mahomes etc etc do these teams have a starting quality back up QB incase their QB gets injured. If your a top top team going for the super bowl you don’t pay someone to be there just in case off the bench.
Hence why Rodgers got annoyed at the Packers for drafting Love instead of getting him a a quality starter.
You find a back up for cheap that’s good/decent you don’t pay starters money for a back up that won’t take the field
“Why sign Brissett if your going after Watson makes no sense?”
On the contrary, it makes 100% sense.
So follow along please..Brissett signed for back up QB money because (and here comes the most important part so please follow along) Brisset is our 2021-22 BACK UP QB.
In other words, BRISSETT WILL NOT BE STARTING.
Another way of putting it is, Brissett will never sniff any incentive money unless Tua or Watson are out for the year.
I’m not sure if I explained myself thoroughly but I hope it helps.
I understand he a back up and signed for back up money but if your trading for a top 5 QB in the league your not exactly building around him by paying someone to sit on the bench all game long all season long. I’m sure most good QBs would rather they spent that money towards upgrading in other positions.
For example Chiefs don’t pay their back up 5/7mil to sit behind Mahomes they’ll pay a starter that money to play with Mahomes and make them better
“paying someone to sit on the bench all game long all season long.”
Yes, you would because this is literally what a backup QB does. This is his job description.
Brisset doesn’t preclude them from trading for Watson because Tua would probably be in the trade package to acquire Watson. Brisset is going to be the backup, either to Tua or Watson.
Wow
Dolphins have no cap room for watson
If the past couple of weeks have shown us anything, it’s that your statement is not the obstacle it was once considered to be.
It appears the Eagles are totally punting this off-season. It looks like the roster will be full of 1st and 2nd Round players and castoffs. Looks like another year with Sudfield as a backup.
