The top remaining piece of the Buccaneers’ free agency puzzle would stand to have a big market, were he to be unsigned by March 15. But the Super Bowl champions hope to keep Shaquil Barrett from making it to free agency.
Bucs brass and Barrett have entered extension discussions, according to SI.com’s Albert Breer (on Twitter). The Bucs chose Chris Godwin over Barrett for their franchise tag and just agreed to terms with Lavonte David. They have less than a week to negotiate exclusively with their top pass rusher.
As a free agent in 2019, Barrett received tepid interest. Offers came only from the Bucs and Bengals, and Barrett signed a one-year, $4MM Bucs pact. The Bucs tagged him last year, following his franchise-record-setting 19.5-sack season. The former Broncos UDFA expressed interest in cashing in this year. Barrett will turn 29 later this year and has a prime opportunity to secure a lucrative long-term deal now, especially considering how much his postseason dominance impacted Tampa Bay’s Super Bowl title.
GM Jason Licht indicated recently he wants Barrett back but sounded like it was not a lock he would return. The Bucs were sitting nearly $5MM over the $180MM cap floor before the David deal; they will need to do extensive work in order to re-sign Barrett and keep other members from the Ndamukong Suh–Rob Gronkowski–Antonio Brown–Leonard Fournette contingent. Licht has also said he can envision UFA-to-be Blaine Gabbert succeeding Tom Brady one day. Brady, however, is discussing yet another extension. That would help free up funds.
Hope this team flops. Sign everyone and regression usually follows. Tom Brady doing his best rendition of lebron by stacking the deck per usual. Dudes had a qbr average of 61 in most super bowl games and usually gets carried by a top rated defense and line, yet he takes full credit.
To be fair, most teams that make it to the Super Bowl have top rated defenses and lines. I don’t think it’s some evil ploy by Brady to receive recognition. I think it’s more the media that causes all of the hoopla and gives Brady all the credit
The mental gymnastics one must have to do to continue to denigrate Brady’s football greatness is probably very taxing on ones future mental outlook. I don’t envy you sir.
@greg m is the typical Tom Brady apologist who looks past numbers and data supporting anything other than Tom is the goat. I don’t envy a jackass talking with little knowledge to support his argument other than “Tom Brady is clutch” Go turn on the tv and let the tv do all the thinking for you.
Tatsumaki –
You are a very rude, angry, and immature person and it shows in all of your posts. I hope you get the help you so obviously need. Awaiting your smart ass response….
Tatsumaki is only here for attention! He doesn’t get any at home! Clearly he probably is employed at the local medical marijuana facility and smoking up all the profits! Don’t give him any attention. I’m sure we can come up with a couple of bucks to buy him a pacifier and a rattle and send it his way!
Tarts, stacking the deck as usual? Aside from Gronk TB11 HAS NEVER had an elite receiver corps before this past year. It’s okay hater, just makes each victory/ring sweeter.
I, too, am amazed at the Brady hate. This past SB, he was the first QB to complete 80% of passes and 3 TDs in a half. I would point out he had Randy Moss and Wes Welker (who dropped an easy third down pass against Giants in the rematch that would have sealed the game) for a few years. Of course, he was out an entire year in that period. It’s a team game. Brady threw over 500 yards in a SB and still lost. I still think if Belichick had played Malcolm Butler that game, the Patriots would have won. Who pulls a starter completely for an unknown reason just before the SB?!
@bostonboob another Tom apologist, little in terms of data just blabbering with his large mouth. I can run down the list of future hofs and all pros mr. Brady has played with, but then again that won’t support your already weak argument. Randy moss, gronk, welker, Antonio brown and Edelman have entered the chat*
Bwahahahaha!!! Brady is the greatest & it just chaps your ass! LOL!
I do agree Tom isn’t great in SBs on average, but he doesn’t seem to make endless gigantic mistakes that easily give away the game either.
You are a zero, dude
Everyone tries to “stack the deck”. Ill tell you the facts that matter NE was a bad team in 2019 and I believe finished 11-5. Tampa was talented before Brady arrived but was a QB away. I have a real hard time knocking a guy who won that many rings in NE and leaves on the wrong side of 40 and wins a super bowl. Sorry he doesn’t air it out 50 yards down field but he moves the chains, scores enough, and you can’t discount the rest on the bench helps a defense. You can go full speed knowing Brady will get you rest moving the chains slowly. Amazing leader too. Not a peep from Antonio Brown in Tampa. If they can resign him watch him go through camp and play a whole season as much as I can’t stand him he’s a stud when he’s in his right frame of mind
Yikes! Kinda shooting low on the Tom Brady replacement there….Blaine Gabbert? The guy is already 31, so he will be 33/34 by the time Brady plans to hang it up, if not older.
The only way Gabbert should be replacing Brady is in an unfortunate injury situation
I think that’s code for a rebuild.
With all the money he’s got coming in from doing commercials and his endorsement revenue, it’s surprising that SHAQ even needs to play professional sports.
Guess he doesn’t get much for:
Insuring his Buick with The General
Treating his aches and pains with Icy Hot
Staying dry with Gold Bond
Eating Papa John’s Pizza
Wearing Reebok shoes
And so on, and so on and so on……
Bwahahahahaha!! Brady is the GOAT you sniveling, petty, jealous fool!!,
Great argument. Greatest of all time, in fact. In terms of arguments, this is the GOAT. I hope ESPN ranks it up there with their all-time greatest GOATs discussion. I don’t think they’ve talked about it enough. Great job.
We would love to have Shaq back if some sort of long term deal can be reached. He is certainly worth it. But worth it or not is in Shaq’s court as his “Break the Bank” theory only works if money can be distributed toward other years, not this one. Without Suh, Nunes Roaches, and other key line players currently under contract Shaq’s dominance dwindles. Plus other key players are need on offense to keep the wheels turning. I see Leonard departing in free agency and he can be replaced in the draft for a less expensive option. He took the job in Tampa just to play last year anyway and wasn’t really thrilled with his role anyway. Your welcome for the ring Lenny!
Gronk will be back, Brown will be back but look for one of the TE’s to be moved either for draft capital or for another player. We could use more depth in the OL possibly tackle so we can move on from Smith’s on again, off again performances. His contract should be restructured anyway and we can send him packing after grooming a suitable replacement. He way to many penalties and poor plays for the $ he playing for.
