Trent Williams isn’t the only notable lineman headed to San Francisco. Free agent center Alex Mack also agreed to join the 49ers in the wee hours of Wednesday morning (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport).
Mack’s deal is a one-year pact worth $5.5MM, according to Rapoport (on Twitter).
It’s a return to sunny California for the UC Berkeley product. The deal also marks a reunion with 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan. Mack previously played for Shanahan with the Browns and Falcons. Mack, 36 in November, comes with serious credentials — six Pro Bowls and a track record for durability. He’s played in and started in just about every possible game since 2009, save for his injury-plagued 2014.
The 49ers needed a quality middle-man in the worst way. While Williams turned in a stellar season, the interior line struggled to hold the line. That’s part of the reason why the Niners’ offense sagged and the club needed a new solution in the wake of Weston Richburg‘s retirement. Journeyman Ben Garland was given a chance to start, but the journeyman wound up with an injury of his own.
Mack, who made the NFL’s most recent all-decade team, can officially put pen to paper at 4pm ET today.
So you’re saying Garland is a journeyman
3 teams in 7 years…
Giants for 4 years and SF for 2 years and the 3rd team?
he played in Denver for 2 years, Atlanta for 3 and 49ers for 2.
never played for giants
The rich get richer
Still waiting to find out about Alex’s secret world.
Go bears
Garland didn’t seem terrible last year. I am kind of surprised they used cap space to improve here honestly. They have so many holes to fill in the secondary.
Adios, re-read the paragraph about how the interior of the line underperformed. It’s not based on Zach Link’s opinion. It’s based on fact. Niner qbs were hammered trying to pass. Did you watch the Super Bowl last year? Niner centers ranked near the bottom in pass protection. Brunskill, who’s a decent guard, played a lot of center this year and struggled. Why? He’s a guard. They were good run blockers but as a whole were below average as pass blockers.
I really wanted Mack glad he came Shannon played a big role I bet for him wanting to come. Now who ever at Qb has no excuses play well or get out
After committing a good deal of their remaining cap now to Williams and Mack, I suspect the clock is now ticking on how long McGlinchey and Jimmy G are on the roster. These deals weren’t done just so Jimmy can get sacked into oblivion again this season from the right side of the line.
Crazy how LTs and even Guards get 20+ mil but for centre’s you can get quality for in/around or under 10mil.
Ryan Kelly will probably end up in the HOF and he’s only getting an average of $12.5MM. It’s total B.S.
Niners get better by just being healthy but the offseason probably made them even better than the team coming into the 2020 season, that’s scary. My guess is their upcoming picks will be spent on a Corner and Wide Out. I know everyone’s talking about the Rams but I think the Niners roll the division.
Pretty sure it’s a 3 year deal now, not a 1 year.
