Before they ultimately hired Nick Sirianni, we heard the Eagles had requested an interview with Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy for their head coaching vacancy. That apparently wasn’t the case.
Speaking at one of his Super Bowl week media availabilities, Chiefs coach Andy Reid said that Philly never submitted an interview request for Bieniemy, per Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com (Twitter link). There has been some buzz that the Eagles didn’t want to pull from the Reid coaching tree again (like they did with Doug Pederson), but Reid said he hasn’t heard anything to suggest that.
This would mean the Eagles were on an island on this one. All six other teams that had head coaching openings submitted a request to interview Bieniemy, who has been a hot name the past couple of cycles but hasn’t been able to secure a top job. It’s especially surprising considering the Eagles seemed determined to cast a wide net in their search, interviewing a slew of candidates who weren’t known to be on the radar elsewhere.
Guys like Josh McDaniels, Jerod Mayo, and Dennis Allen, who didn’t draw much known interest from other teams, all interviewed with the Eagles for the gig. Reid has long lobbied for Bieniemy to get a head coaching job, so he was probably annoyed that his former team never actually put in the effort to submit an interview request.
You guys know that pic you keep using for every Eric Bieniemy story is not him, right? Good lord.
You do know that you keep saying this and it is simply untrue.
freaking hacks lol. same as when every single solitary reporter says “houston youve got a problem” when something happens here.
Eagles trying to distance themselves from the Andy Reid tree even though it then a Super Bowl win.
i mean, isnt Siriani part of the Reid tree via Reich and Peterson?
Nonstory
Why is this even a story? It’s like trying to say the Eagles organization is horrible because they didn’t give someone a request to interview? My god what’s this world coming to where the simple fact one guy isn’t included in a teams interview process that people are offended. There’s 6 other teams that did interview him and didn’t choose him. There’s a story for you. SMH
I think they’re just correcting a mistake. They didn’t say that Bienemy was being unjustly denied a spot, just that the notion that he was a candidate was wrong.
Eagles probably knew they were at the bottom of the available teams and were going outside the box knowing nobody wanted that job.
Too much baggage in his past to be a Head Coach. No team wants that stuff dragged out of the closet by the media whenever the Eagles have a losing streak.
the only one I see (with current climate), is the parking attendant, but he was 24 yrs old. Dude is 51, I think he has matured..what I have a problem with is the pushing by the NFL and media in respect to him and a few others. The nfl pushing minority candidates is purely a self interest publicity PSA. if they wanted more minority coaches they’d setup a better infrastructure and mentor/apprentice type programs
No, I don’t think that is much of an issue. Remember Matt Patricia? My guess is that teams are worried a lot of his success is situational. There are a lot of guys who could do a good job with Mahomes, Kelce, Hill, Hardman, Watkins, Helaire, and with Andy Reid as the head coach.
The Patricia thing came out after he was hired, I think. It was also an allegation, wasn’t it?
Most people don’t stop to think that maybe his marketability is being hurt by Andy Reid calling the plays instead of him. I know other coaches have leaped to HC positions from non play calling positions but there is that little fact that could be hurting him
Horrendous decision by Lurie & Roseman. It just doesn’t look or feel good at all.
