Richard Sherman is set to hit free agency, and it sounds like he could be looking for a two-year deal. While talking with ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, the veteran cornerback laid out the plan for the rest of his playing career.
“I only want to play two more [seasons],” Sherman said (via ESPN’s Nick Wagoner). “I want to get on a competitive team. I think I still have a lot to give to the game. I think I still have a lot that I want to accomplish and I think I can go out there and help a defense come together like it should and reach their potential, reach the heights that the defenses that I’ve played on have reached.”
As Wagoner notes, Sherman really hasn’t had a traditional trip to free agency during his career. He became a free agent after getting released by the Seahawks, but he quickly caught on with the 49ers. That time around, Sherman acted as his own agent and secured a three-year, $27.15MM deal that was mostly based on incentives.
Sherman somewhat returned to form during the 2019 campaign, earning a Pro Bowl nod after compiling 61 tackles and three interceptions in 15 games with San Francisco. His 2020 was derailed by a calf injury, limiting Sherman to only 18 tackles and one interception in five games. Assuming that Sherman will hold fast on his request for a one- or two-year deal from a contender, he’ll likely have to take a significant pay cut in 2021.
The soon-to-be 33-year-old previously opined that he probably wouldn’t be back in San Francisco next season. One potential suitor could be Las Vegas, as the cornerback and head coach Jon Gruden expressed interest in joining forces this offseason.
Come home to seattle
Come to the jets J-E-T-S jets jets jets
He said contender
Jets haven’t been a contender for anything since the Butt Fumble cursed them. Unless you want to consider them a contender for biggest dumpster fire franchise.
Should head back to the Seahawks
Having him Jamal Adams, Diggs and Bobby Wagner would be really nice. Then get Russell Wilson some protection and you have a possible super bowl team
Already over the cap and need to resign Wagner and pay Jamal.. can’t afford to pay Sherman and upgrade the Oline
I don’t think the Hawks will sign Sherm but playing devils advocate here- unless I’m mistaken, the contracts to Wagner and Adams give the FO the opportunity to prorate signing bonuses. In other words, they wouldn’t be able to sign Sherman if they didn’t have the opportunity to resign Bobby and pay Jamal.
If he wants to go to a contender, a place that would welcome his leadership, be an influence on the younger players, and have fans behind him 100%, that’s a reunion back in Seattle. He doesn’t need to be the old Richard Sherman, just be a decent CB.
Last offseason the Hawks traded for Dunbar- who like Sherman has dealt with injuries over the last couple of seasons. That didn’t work out too well, I don’t imagine the Hawks would put themselves in a similar position this season. I think we can expect a CB signing in the same price range as Sherman, just one that comes with less injury risk
He should head to a zone heavy team, not to somewhere he’ll be left on an island. He hasn’t been good in M2M in a couple years, since his Achilles rupture. Unless he was willing to convert to safety, there’s not a lot of teams that could use him effectively.
I would really like to see him come to Cleveland and pair with Ward, a healthy Greedy Williams and Delpit at safety. They obviously need help at LB as well, but I think he would be a good fit and help the D create an identity.
Greenbay…they arent going resign king sherman would be the perfect fit opposite jaire and could help teach whoever they draft this year to be the future corner, and greenbay needs someone edgy like him give that de some attitude
‘“Jon Gruden expressed interest in joining forces this offseason” with Sherman. Are they going to fight crime?
“The Incredible Adventures of Chucky and Optimus Prime.” If you have a problem, if you need help, and if you can find them…
He is playing in name alone anymore. He won’t be worth the $$$ he will want. Some poor decision making club however will over pay. Richard “ Jerra” is on the phone
Sherman has lost a couple of steps. You could see he was using his experience to compensate, but good OCs will be able to exploit that – as he has to commit too early in order to make a play.
If he can help your other corners develop he might be a good signing, but if you are paying for the Richard Sherman of old you are getting a bad deal.
