The Eagles’ hiring of Frank Reich disciple Nick Sirianni does not seem to have changed Carson Wentz‘s stance about wanting a trade out of Philadelphia. While Eagles brass made working with Wentz a priority during the franchise’s coaching search, trade chatter surrounding the former No. 2 overall pick has reignited since the Matthew Stafford deal.
This recent trade buzz is connected to Wentz still wanting to leave Philadelphia, ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter said during an appearance on 97.5 The Fanatic. Doug Pederson‘s firing was previously said to “significantly increase” the chances Wentz stayed in Philly, but the trade request the five-year veteran planned to submit appears to still be his preference.
It would cost the Eagles $34MM to trade Wentz — compared to the record $22MM it cost the Rams to ship out Jared Goff in the Stafford deal — but the team has fielded calls. They have already received “aggressive” offers for the unhappy quarterback, Tim McManus of ESPN.com reports. Despite Wentz being tied to a lucrative contract and coming off his worst season, the Eagles are still aiming for substantial compensation, per McManus.
The Lions used Goff’s high-end contract to leverage the Rams into surrendering two first-round picks. With the Eagles not as close to a Super Bowl as the Rams at present, the parameters of a Wentz trade would seemingly be different than the ones that led to Goff’s Los Angeles exit.
Wentz joins Deshaun Watson among passers seeking trades entering the 2021 league year, and the former would not fetch a haul in the same vicinity as the latter. Having Reich as their head coach and having recently hired ex-Eagles passing-game coordinator Press Taylor, the Colts line up as the team that would make perhaps the most sense for Wentz — if he is made available.
Colts GM Chris Ballard said Friday, during a radio interview with 107.5 The Fan’s Dan Dakich, the Colts are “exploring lots of options” at quarterback (Twitter link). It appears safe to expect the Colts to discuss Wentz with the Eagles, but it is uncertain what kind of offer Philly can expect. The Colts traded their first-round pick last year for DeForest Buckner but fit the profile as a suitor due to their playoff-caliber roster with a gaping hole at quarterback. With Philip Rivers retiring and Jacoby Brissett not on their 2021 payroll, the Colts also are projected to have the second-most cap space entering the 2021 league year
So let me get this straight.. Philly wants significant compensation for a team to take his horrible contract off their hands and to save them face from paying a backup $35mill yr .. F Philly ..
In other words, they know they can’t trade him unless they send significant draft capital along with him. They probably don’t want to do that. Thus, they can’t trade him. I don’t understand the “F Philly”, but if it makes you feel better then you do you.
F Philly
F the Foreskins
If I’m the Colts, I’d MUCH RATHER just sign free agent Fitzmagic than trade for dumpster fire Wentz. No brainer. Not that either is a great option..but trading ANYTHING for Wentz is just stupid. Philly would literally have to bundle their 1st round pick with Wentz to even get the attention of a competent organization.
you’re going to rely on Fitz as a starter?
Agreed … Fitzmagic is better than Wentz… he’d be interesting in Chicago too
LOL… Stop It!
sayonara
Colts need to get it done
They say bears have made the best offer
Please. No.
Posting a comment to this discussion is t even worth it. If you believe Fitz is better then Wentz I wouldn’t know where to start.
We have a 28 yr old QB in his prime, who has had 1 bad season and now we are ready to trade him. Which player on the 2020 roster had a good season. When was the last time we had a legit WR, RB for Wentz. He has Ertz, who the last few season looks like he is washed up.
Trading Wentz would be a big mistake. QB are not a dime a dozen players. They are the most important ones in the field. Surround him with some weapons, script the offense to his strengths, and try to help him. He was great under Frank Reich, our new coach was on Reich staff the past few years. Let’s see what the coach can do. If they trade Wentz, get ready Eagles fans, we are going to have a bunch of 3-13 & 4-12 season on the horizon
This post is more accurate than most would like to admit. The fact is negative or positive press significantly influences peoples’ opinions of players’ actual football skills. People who dislike a player’s attitude can and will conflate that with his football profile.
The fact is Wentz is young, and has had a history of success that directly corresponds to the team’s history of success. When the Eagles start winning in spite of Wentz, the argument is much more clear. But the fact right now is that the team as a whole is bad, and not just roster-bad. Players are playing far below their ability, on multiple fronts. That’s much more concerning than simply having bad players. It’s ludicrous to suggest that the same factors that affect the rest of the team cannot affect the quarterback.
Wentz definitely contributed to the Eagles’ struggles, and certainly seems to perhaps get back to football focus-wise. This is not an exoneration of Carson Wentz. Labeling him as terrible after Pederson mishandled the entire team is not correct, though. We do have to acknowledge that, no matter what his ceiling is or isn’t, he does have a chance to bounce back and at least be a good starter in the league.
“When the Eagles start winning in spite of Wentz, the argument is much more clear.”
Eagles had a 10-3 record in the games Wentz missed during the 2017-18 seasons.
Again, I mean winning in spite of Wentz, not simply winning when he was out. He has to be on the field for that. Meaning, Wentz costing the team personally by playing terribly while the rest of the team played well.
The Patriots had a 14-6 record (if my memory serves) without Brady. I doubt that means that they won in spite of him.
I don’t know that any team wins in spite of a player as you have defined it. A HC would have to be trying to get himself fired if he continually started a player “who was costing the team personally by playing terribly while the rest of the team played well”.
I’m not entirely sure why reporters keep saying that LA included a second additional 1st round pick for the Lions to take on his contract.. It’s a rumor and it’s clearly not true if you do simple math. Lions saw value on Goff and that’s why LA’s trade made more sense then Carolina. They would’ve simply taken the 8 pick instead – if Goff had negative value. Two late first doesn’t even equal the 8 pick. Common sense.
As a colts fan I’ll trust Reich on this one. If he wants Wentz go get him but do not give up “considerable” compensation.
Bears fan here…jokes on us always lol. Bears would get the 6 int Fitz not the 6td Fitz. Bears front office, ownership included are so mentally inept you can’t even process their approach to things. Blind leading the blind. Do you think trading mack and a few 1st rounders would get Watson? So the bears could destroy his career .
