The Bengals had some momentum with two straight upset victories the past two weeks, and the Ravens promptly vanquished that with a blowout win on Sunday. We had heard a few weeks ago that head coach Zac Taylor was likely to return for a third season, but that’s apparently not set in stone.
Taylor “may not be as safe as some believe,” Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com writes. Florio adds “there’s a rumor making that rounds that Taylor could be out.” As for what Cincy could be plotting, Florio highlights the potential reunion between Joe Burrow and his college passing guru Joe Brady, who is now the OC in Carolina. Florio think that the Bengals could be spurred to make the plunge if they fear another team will hire Brady this cycle.
Taylor is now 6-25-1 in his first two seasons as coach, and while circumstances obviously haven’t been ideal it’s still hard to defend that record. Cincinnati went after him due to his association with Sean McVay after he spent a couple years on the Rams’ staff as an assistant. The 37-year-old had never been a head coach at any level before getting hired to replace Marvin Lewis.
As Florio points out, one thing working in Taylor’s favor is Bengals brass’ usual conservative nature when it comes to firing coaches. After all, they did keep Lewis around for 16 seasons, and the fact that he’d likely have millions coming his way could be what saves Taylor for another year. If he does stick around, he’ll need a major leap from Burrow and the rest of the team to buy him a fourth season.
Of course, there’s no guarantee Burrow is ready for Week 1 next year after tearing his ACL and damaging other ligaments, so it could be a tough job for whoever is roaming the sidelines in 2021. We should know more about Taylor’s status tomorrow.
The problem is Taylor, it all starts at the tight-wad Mike Brown. He’s the one that won’t get any protection for Burrows and when Andy Dalton was here. These quarterbacks got killed and we all witness what happened to Burrows because of no protection.
*isn’t Taylor
Enough with the tightwad arguments. They spend more real money (they carry very little dead money on the cap) than most. They just invest poorly. AJ Green, Gio, Dunlap, Atkins, probably even Mixon should have never received their last extensions. I have no problem with them letting Whit go. They drafted 2 guys the year before; they just didn’t develop them at all. It just failed miserably because they got guys they weren’t able to develop for various reasons
He is a tightwod, you can say what you want but a fine example was when he wanted to go cheap by letting Wentworth go to let rookies to protect the quarterback! It’s a known fact thar Mike Brown is a tightwad! Do they ever sign any real good free agents? Heck NO! Taylor can only work with Mike Brown gives him to have a winning team so YES It all falls on Mike Browns
Who’s Wentworth? And Jake Fisher and Cedric Ogbuehi were going into their second years and Andrew Whitworth turned 35 at the end of 2016 season so it made sense for them to draft a 1st and 2nd rounder to replace the guy on an expiring contract. That backfired because of poor coaching and scouting.
Fellow Reds/Bengals fan … I agree with some of what you said but Taylor is not helping. There are only 32 Head coaching jobs at the highest level of American football. Taylor, until last week was 0-19-1 on the road. He is now 1-19-1. You can’t keep your job at the highest level with that road record, period. He needs to go, clean house, the only coach worth keeping is Simmons.
The NFL above all sports and up there with some high positions in the world is a results and what have you done for me lately position but I think he needs one more year. If you are letting a coach go after only two years it would need to be more than just a record. I think you’d need to see clearly he wasn’t up to the task, players quit on him, lost locker room, etc… They drafted Burrow I think with one more draft and a healthy QB with high promise you have a better idea of whether he’s the right man for the job. Changing out coaches every two years and having scheme/system changes all the time especially with a rookie QB who showed up side under current system is a bad move. If Burrow has a healthy year and you add another high end talent in the draft without progression then you make that move. If the moves sole purpose is to get Joe Brady that’s an even bigger mistake. I’m not a Cinci and admit I don’t follow closely but from what I have seen they need Burrow healthy and better players
All due respect but I can see you do r follow closely. He’s overmatched as a coach. He’s out of his league. He needs to go. I did not like the hire from the stat snd every snap just reinforces why.
Andy Dalton had one of the best lines in football until the end of Marvin Lewis’s run, they all just left in FA.
You may think I’m crazy but……I have been a bengals fan for 57 years. I am from cincy, what we have always asked for has been a prominent named coach. We never get one. I think as much as I don’t like him…rex Ryan would bring attitude to this team until wearing out his welcome.
Ryan > Taylor … but I’d rather have others.
Eh, not sure you want Ryan. His act gets old pretty quickly and honestly, I don’t think he’s good enough to warrant the headache.
Haven’t heard much about him as a candidate and I doubt it. He was known even as a head couch as a bit of a goof but had some success but now that he’s on ESPN he’s really using his personality to cater to viewers which I think hurts the NFL image as a HC. I’m also not sure if Ryan approaching 60 is interested anymore he’s got a nice cushy job after making millions in the NFL. But I wouldn’t completely rule it out. He had some success in the NFL for sure and with a crap organization and QB in the Jets and Sanchez. I also have no idea how the man thinks. He may have a competitive drive he can’t turn off and may want to return to the NFL.
Again it falls on Mike Brown as he don’t want to pay the money for a well known name coach and then he may not take it because the team Mike Brown has put together!
he’s was like their 6 or 10th choice for Head coach wasn’t he ? so yea give em 2yr see what he does and improve ur team all while looking for ur next coach u want then try and get em. they could do it this past off-season cuz I mean after u swing and miss like they did u kinda need time to regroup lol. but I’m sure he’s not their answer.
Pretty dumb to fire coaches that were never given a competitive team to work with. If you want to be a perennial bottom feeder just do a reboot every 3 years.
Right? Worked for Cleveland for 20 years. I don’t think Taylor is more than an OC but he hasn’t been given a team that can win.
Urban Meyer???
