Rams left tackle Andrew Whitworth will be back in action for Saturday’s Wild Card game against the Seahawks. He also says he’ll be back for another year of football, as Greg Bishop of Sports Illustrated writes.
“I’m pretty jacked up to come back, that’s for sure,” Whitworth said. “I don’t see any reason why I wouldn’t [return] next season.”
Whitworth, 39, previously said that 2020 would probably be his final season. He also said the same thing in 2019, so his announcement doesn’t necessarily come as a surprise. This year, Pro Football Focus rated him as one of the league’s top lineman. He played at a high level throughout his 15th pro season, up until the knee injury that put him on the sidelines. Without Whitworth, the Rams dropped games to losing clubs, further underscoring his importance to the team.
The Rams still have Whitworth under contract through 2022 thanks to the three-year, $30MM deal he inked in the spring. You can expect him back in L.A. next season, when he’ll continue on as one of the oldest linemen in NFL history.
Pretty impressive to be playing left tackle at 40. Being a man of that size is not easy on the body. He’s missed some time this year but overall he has a pretty good track record of being available on game day
He will finally retire when his brain is gone and he can’t find the field. Wow age 40 and still playing. Gotta wonder does he need the $$$ or just enjoy it?
I’m guessing he enjoys it at this point
Perhaps he feels good physically speaking! After all is said and done, they say age is just a number, and even others say age is just overrated until is not. No matter the age criteria, the money is good for Whitworth…
Although it’s hard on his body OL isn’t the position that would cause much head injuries. I think if the bottom half of his body can hold up he should play until he either chooses not to or his skills diminish
That first sentence is absurd. Why do you think they call the line of scrimmage the “trenches”?
Have you ever played football Lemon, or even watched a game? Offensive linemen don’t block with their heads and they don’t tackle very often. Leg injuries are the most common as literally tonnes of pressure hit offensive lineman’s knees between their own efforts and the push from defensive linemen.
Tacklers and the tackled (WR, RB, QB, TE) the ones who get concussions.
