Reigning NVP Mitchell Trubisky is slated for free agency. However, the quarterback says he “can see” a scenario in which he returns to the Bears (via Jeff Dickerson of ESPN.com).
“I think I can definitely see myself back here next year,” Trubisky said. “Obviously, a lot of that is out of my control, but it feels like home and it feels like we have unfinished business. Right now, I’m just bummed about this season being over and how the game went. So, a lot of emotions going on right now, but I can see that. We’ll see. There are a lot of things that have to happen and a lot of decisions that have to be made and that’s out of my control, but I can see that.”
Trubisky, a hit with the ages 6-12 demo, lost his starting job to Nick Foles early in the season. He returned to the starting lineup in Week 12 and helped the Bears to wins over the Texans, Vikings, and Jaguars. However, it was all downhill after that, and Sunday’s loss to the Saints could mark his final game with Chicago.
Despite it all, Trubisky remains confident in his abilities.
“I feel like I got better [after the benching],” Trubisky said. “I feel like I got better this year. I feel like when I was put back in the starting lineup that the offense was better and I gave my team a chance to win, and we did win games, and that is why we were able to get back into the playoffs. It wasn’t just me, but it was the whole unit coming together and the whole team making plays and really getting through that adversity together. But I feel like I was a big part of that.
“So there are some good things that we did toward the end of the season that helped put us in position to be able to play here tonight, but that’s now how we want to finish…I think we have some pieces, but there is a lot more that we need to do better, and we need to figure that out.”
I’m not a fan of Trubisky’s play but what college intern wrote this article? So amateurish.
Yes you don’t say NVP without explaining. Poorly written and edited
should’ve thrown Foles in there. okay, I’ll prepare for the trash i will get for saying that now.
Trubisky is gone. Since it now appears that Matt Nagy is staying, regardless if they keep GM Ryan Pace or not. Nagy doesn’t care for Mitch Trubisky , so the Bears will most likely move on from Mitch.
I don’t if he doesn’t care for him. Nagy inherited Trubisky and stuck with him when he had the opportunity to acquire a new QB any season afterward, built a strategy around him, and reinserted him into the lineup to save his own job this year. I don’t think Nagy dislikes Trubisky.
The thing is, Chicago has the same problem this year that they did last year: Nagy and Trubisky both showed just enough to make you question if they’re actually getting better together or if this is just the pattern for their future. Right now, just judging this season, it seems like the best course to keep Trubisky and find another possible starter to compete with him…which is exactly what they did last year.
Foles was not the right choice-do you bet that that’s the case, that you just got the wrong guy, and try again? Or do you give Nagy a new QB to try with? That’s why Chicago is in an uneveniable position right now-Trubisky showed juuuust enough to make the decision to jettison him uncertain. You feel like you should, but his play down the stretch induces some doubt. I think, with a deep QB draft, you could afford to keep Trubisky on a cheap one year deal and left your pick take over midseason if he falters, but I can see either approach easily.
NVP?
I was thinking the same thing? Not Valuable Player?
He was named the MVP, or NVP, on Nickelodeon’s coverage of the game. He references it again in his “6-12” year-old line, which is funny… if you get the joke.
its amazing that PFR put it on their site.
No, we got the joke, and we thought it was stupid, just like the rest of the article and the tie in. I wonder why Patterson didn’t win any awards for his F-bomb drop on live air during the Nickelodeon broadcast?
Nickelodeon’s MVP… the game streamed on Nick yesterday and with 49% of the kids vote, Trubunski won NVP
Yeah, it stands for Nickelodeon Valuable Player which has a voter pool comprised of the aforementioned 6-12 yr olds
If that WR doesn’t drop the TD pass early in the game, people might be having a different opinion. I missed the 2nd half of the game but on the first half he was decent.
But perhaps a fresh start for him elsewhere is needed. Maybe trade for Darnold.
Mitchell could go somewhere like the Pats or Panthers or 49ers.
No, we wouldn’t. One dropped pass doesn’t erase a career of ineptitude.
Well, it would certainly be devastating if we lost a player who is a big hit with the ages 6-12 demo. Maybe we can sign a Pokemon as a replacement.
Oh come on, you know that wouldn’t be fair. They evolve, you know.
As a Packers fan, please Mitch stay! We love you as much as Jay Cutler. Never leave us!
All kidding aside, the Bears need to move on. Sounds like plenty of good options will be available and they can get a major upgrade at the position. Rivalry is good. Bears need to step up there game.
Maybe Mitch can see it, but I doubt that the Bears can.
Mitch’s “hot streak” was an illusion. The Jags and Texans have bottom 3 defenses according to DVOA and even Minnesota was trending toward that direction by the end of the season. Chicago better not fall for this
Another mature article from the perennial NVP “journalists” at profootballrumors. Can’t wait for the follow up wedgie they surely have planned for Trubisky. Stay classy…
Why do you keep reading, then??
At least he won Nickelodeon MVP
Pro Football Reference also lists the NVP award on their site. Football has become such a joke. Between all the antics they play, this Nickelodeon marketing campaign, and allowing EA/Madden to keep destroying their game on the only product allowed to carry the NFL shield and players’ names and likenesses, it is amazing anyone bothers with this nonsense anymore.
Crazily enough, you’re bothering with the nonsense by commenting on this site.
He’s right, even if we’re the biggest suckers of them all.
Commenting in opposition in something is not condoning something or supporting it. I didn’t think I would have to say this to somebody….
My post is for the edification of people that haven’t had the same awakening as I have. Thus, it is a service I am providing free of charge and you should be grateful to me.
Trubisky shouldn’t be on the Bears roster next season, not even as a place holder, as some have suggested recently. He’s been with the Bears for four years. In those four years, we’ve seen what he can and can’t do.
He can throw short passes (5-7 yards), he can roll out and throw short passes and he can run a bit. That’s it. He can’t read defenses, he can’t cycle through reads, he stares down receivers, he routinely throws in to double coverage, he cuts off half the field when he rolls out due to his aversion to longer passes and he he routinely makes bad decisions with the ball.
Whatever Pace saw in him when he traded up to take him has not developed in four years under Nagy. Maybe that’s partly Nagy’s fault. Maybe Nagy wanted someone that could run a more exotic offense that was averse to running the ball and Trubisky never developed the skills Nagy needed for even a dumbed down version of his system.
But at this point, if the center of a team is the relationship between the coach and QB, then this QB needs to try someplace else. I’d also argue that this entire coaching staff needs to go. Not only were they terrible with Trubisky, but with a proven talent like Foles and Glennon as well.
I also think Pace needs to go for thinking any of those three were good ideas. I get that he’s pulled some winners in later rounds and that’s great, but in practice, this defense has faded since 2018 and this offense has been one of the worst in the league for years now. You don’t keep bringing back the same people each year when you’re at the bottom of the league in something. Not Pace, not Nagy and definitely not Trubisky.
Solid analysis. The thing is, if you keepNagy, which does seem to be what they’re doing, what is the path forward at QB? Is it free agency, or another draft? Nagy doesn’t figure to have bought himself more than a year with the second half resurgence, so do you trust him with a long-term candidate at QB?
If you do draft, then you can afford to bring back Trubisky on a year deal. You don’t want to have to teach another player that position just to bench him after a few games when your rookie has learned the playbook. And any bridge or temporary starter will likely be more expensive than your homegrown draft disappointment who likely wouldn’t find a starting job anywhere else. Unless the Bears decide to delve into free agency, re-signing Trubisky-with the knowledge that they’re drafting his successor this offseason-might be the most prudent option.
Bear in mind (no pun intended) that this move is suggested only with the expectation that they are drafting a rookie as a long term replacement, who will start in lieu of Trubisky as soon as he is ready. No need to go out and sign another disposable QB of that’s the approach. I do agree with everything that you’ve stated regarding the time invested and can see your argument (hence the upvote).
Honestly, I think they should go both routes; sign Taylor Heiniecke to a one year deal with a team option for a second year. His current contract is for 132k and his contract is up. He had one good game, so I can’t imagine other teams will be banging down his door to be there starter. But if you offer 2 mil with a team option for 4 mil and slot him in as your day one starter, maybe you can at least see what he’s got while the QB you draft high holds a clipboard.
It’s two lottery tickets, but honestly at this point, I’d rather try that or something like it and hope one of them hits then go with the one we already know won’t. There’s nothing else in free agency that’s even remotely appealing.
WTH is this “Trubisky, a hit with the ages 6-12 demo,…” hahahaha
I “can see” mountain tops, but I can’t and shouldn’t climb a mountain.
