Friday afternoon brought Dom Capers closer to hitting for the NFC North cycle. The former Packers DC and Vikings assistant will be a part of Dan Campbell‘s Lions staff next season.
The Vikings and the former head coach parted ways at season’s end. Capers spent nine seasons as Green Bay’s DC but has bounced around in recent years, serving in a senior defensive assistant-type role in Jacksonville and Minnesota. He will be a senior defensive assistant in Detroit as well, per the Lions.
While the 70-year-old Capers has not been with the Bears in his 30-plus-year NFL career, he has served as head coach for the Panthers and Texans — helming each as expansion teams — and was a defensive coordinator with the Steelers, Jaguars and Dolphins prior to his lengthy Green Bay stop.
He will join Aaron Glenn‘s defensive staff in Detroit. Glenn was with the Texans for most of Capers’ stay in Houston, serving as a starting cornerback from 2002-04. Capers served as Houston’s HC from 2002-05. With Glenn a first-time DC, the Lions adding one of the NFL’s most experienced coaches — and one who is familiar with the current NFC North makeup — makes sense.
I’m getting more impressed by the day. The Lions have never attracted this type of coaching talent before. Interesting to see where this goes.
Unfortunately capers isn’t talent…..that’s a bad hire but at least he’s not the DC so the damage he can do is minimal.
Coaching talent? Not sure if you watched the Packers defense when this guy was on the team but it upside of their Súper bowl year, they were always burnable.
He turned bottom 1/3 defenses into top 10 defenses for points allowed in his first year at Pittsburgh, Miami, & Green Bay. If that was simply luck I’ll be glad to have that luck on the Lions staff.
Great hire. Quite a few young guys and Capers can keep them honest. Disregard the two bonehead comments above. Capers is very well respected league wide. Tons of knowledge and years of great success.
Bonehead huh? Yeah we only wasted a decade of Aaron Rodgers in his prime because of his continual terribly performing defenses and McCarthys inability to fire his BFF.
Least my comment has facts to back it up. Yours is just a bunch of crap. He’s def NOT respected league wide.
You can tell who watches football and who is 13 years old. Capers doesn’t decide who plays defense, the GM does. So saying he was a bad coach with some of the worst defensive talent in the league just shows the ignorance of these little kids. Great coach, great hire. He will help their culture in a big way.
You can also tell who doesn’t know what they’re talking about when you saw the players GB had on that defense and yet still were one of the worst in the league. When you got nothing to back your claim you deflect with insults. It’s ok….I’ve been wrong before too.
You seem to be wrong A LOt.
Dude just get a life.
Doesn’t matter who the DC , Campbell is a CLOWN and this will be a typical Lions club.
Elaborate on exactly what makes Campbell a clown. He has interim coaching experience and improved the blocking of Saints tight ends considerably. He seems well-suited to change the culture in Detroit. I would be interested in hearing your take on the matter
Too many chiefs, not enough indians
They’ll have Geronimo back next season.
