As the regular season winds down, we’ve got a pretty good sense of what’s going to happen with all the coaching decisions. One of the only things still truly up in the air is the status of Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn. Apparently no decision has been made, and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network says that’ll be the case until Los Angeles brass gets together on Monday (Twitter video link).
To that end, Lynn is the “biggest wild card” of the coaching carousel, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com tweets. Fowler adds that people he’s talked to around the league believe it’s 50/50 as to whether Lynn gets brought back for a fifth season. There are apparently slight differences of opinion here, as Jay Glazer of FOX Sports said during a Sunday morning TV hit that he believes Lynn will likely be a goner after Monday’s meeting (Twitter video link).
Lynn went 9-7 his first year and then 12-4 the following season, winning a playoff game, but things collapsed quickly after that. The Chargers went just 5-11 last season and 7-9 in 2020, losing a mind-boggling amount of close games both times. It looked in the middle of the season like Lynn was a lame-duck as he made a series of in-game blunders and the Chargers stood at 3-9.
But the team rallied right after getting eliminated from playoff contention, winning four straight and potentially saving Lynn’s job in the process. Justin Herbert has been a revelation in his rookie season, but the coaching has often been questionable to put it kindly.
If the gig were to open up it would look very attractive on paper, as Herbert looks like a star in the making while there’s a ton of talent at the skill positions and on defense. All-Pro safety Derwin James missed the entire 2020 campaign but should be returning to play at an elite level in 2021. We’ll know more about Lynn’s fate tomorrow.
The Spanos family have run off the two best coaches the Chargers have ever had. They haven’t hired a good coach since Marty Schottenheimer. You can trust them to always make the wrong decision. I got a little excited today when I heard Urban Meyer might be going to the Chargers but now it looks almost certain that he’s going to the Jaguars. They probably won’t fire Lynn because they won their last four games even though they were against terrible teams and the Chiefs JV team.
When Lynn first coached the Chargers, I thought he was a true gent and good coach, but now I think he is a complete disaster.
The Spanos family is a complete disaster
The thing is who will the Chargers replace Lynn with
Also Schottenheimer had his quirks too
Him and his damn Marty ball
Marty was awful in the playoffs. Why win a bunch of regular season games if you’re just going to turtle up in the playoffs? Had no problem with him getting bounced.
they’re making a run at Atlanta’s choking title
Chargers with the right appointment could be a serious contender.
Herbert has been excellent as a rookie, they looked alright offensively and if everyone’s fit and in form that defence can be elite.
Anthony Lynn isn’t going anywhere. Of there losses 7 of the 9 have been from 7 points or less. Lynn and his staff have adjusted to roster changes and the team has not stopped fighting.
Not only will Anthony Lynn be back, the Chargers will seriously compete for the #1 seed in the AFC West next year.
They lost because Lynn has no time management skills
Yeah what you say is right. But I remember at least 2 of those losses that were squarely on him or his coaches, which he is held accountable for, dealing with clock management and play calling
Lynn is horrible. Their special teams have been terrible since he has been here. His defenses consistently underachieve and his offense is the most vanilla in the league.
They have never been able to run the ball or stop the ball run since he’s been the head coach. Their offensive line is consistently one of the worst in football. In short they never fix their problems year after year. This guy hast to go.
Mark Davis barber, not sure where you get your info, but you were wrong.
Oh gosh please Fire this clown.
He has made so many coaching errors in those one score games that they’ve lost over the last two or three years it’s ridiculous. Even the announcers criticize the communication and the strategy and the clock management of the coaching staff.
Exactly. You’d think this could be fixed but 2-3 years of an obvious flaw with no improvements… I say next.
If they let Lynn go, hopefully their next coach won’t cancel a scrimmage for more “important” things. I would hope that the new coach could find some time for that stuff during the 168 hrs a week has to offer instead of cancelling a scrimmage. JMO
The Sid Gillman coaching tree has produced some very good coaches. Chargers might want to consider Tony Dungy, Lovie Smith or Jim Caldwell.
Hope they don’t consider them.
