The Giants will be making plenty of changes this offseason, but they’re standing pat with their GM. Dave Gettleman will return in 2021, according to Paul Schwartz of the New York Post.
Gettleman, 70 in February, is heading into his fourth year as the Giants’ GM. The team’s 6-10 record might have fallen short of summertime hopes, but they nearly qualified for the playoffs thanks to the state of the NFC East. Their record also showed at least some progress from 2019, when they finished 4-12.
The Giants were more encouraged by Gettleman’s wins in the spring. Cornerback James Bradberry, linebacker Blake Martinez, and defensive back Logan Ryan all proved to be savvy pickups. Meanwhile, the veteran GM was vindicated for his expensive gamble on defensive lineman Leonard Williams, who finished 2020 with a career-best 11.5 sacks.
Gettleman and head coach Joe Judge will now be tasked with evaluating the rest of the locker room and coaching staff. Offensive coordinator Jason Garrett‘s status remains murky after Daniel Jones‘ disappointing season, though things probably would have been better with Saquon Barkley in the lineup. Meanwhile, they’ll have some in-house accounting to do — this year’s free agent class features Williams and Barkley is eligible for an extension.
I’m not even a Giants fan but this seems awful
The Maras are clueless. This guy should never have been hired in the first place. Goes 15-33, gets to keep his job. Can’t imagine they’re a playoff team next year.
Why is that happening what has he done to keep him job. Crazy crazy
Obvious cowboy troll. You no zero if you dont think this team is in a MUCH better place than when Gettleman inherited this team.
They’ll only go as far as Daniel Jones can take them, and that doesn’t look to be very far
As a Giants fan, this is extremely disappointing.
“Meanwhile, the veteran GM was vindicated for his expensive gamble on defensive lineman Leonard Williams, who finished 2020 with a career-best 11.5 sacks.”
No, he wasn’t. He gave up a third rounder during the 2019 season, despite having one of the worst records in football, for a player who was about to be a free agent. If he wanted him that badly, he could have just waited until the season was over and just signed him and not wasted a third round pick.
It was a nonsensical move at the time and remains one. They didn’t even lock him up long term (ostensibly the entire point of acquiring him prior to him hitting free agency) and he can sign elsewhere right now.
As a tangent, if Williams helped them improve down the stretch at all in 2019, he contributed to them worsening their draft position and possibly losing out in Chase Young. They ended up fourth and selecting Andrew Thomas.
Which 3rd round pick or later had a better season this year than Williams? The fact that he was acquired mid-season last year let the Giants tag him and not commit to a long term contract just yet. If DG doesn’t make that trade, Williams likely signs a multi year deal elsewhere because the Giants were, evidently, not very interested in adding him long term last off-season.
I’m not a huge DG fan myself, but trading a 3rd and a 5th for a guy with 1.5 years of team control that produced at the level Williams did is a major win for the Giants.
Only if they sign him long term ! They were 1-6 when he made the trade on a fast track to nowhere . You make no sense. Why would he trade a 3&5 w no plan to sign him LT ? So he could play on the second worst team in town?
Spot on! Perhaps his worst move. His explanation made it worse “We wanted to get a real good look at him “
His trading of picks for Ogeltree wasn’t very good either. Plus taking Lauletta with a 4th in 2018. If only he had taken Q.Nelson and N.Chubb in 2018 instead of Barkley and Hernandez. Out of his 5 first round picks in 3 years the only one that has really worked out so far is Lawrence.
Well, 5 days in and my resolution to not complain about the Giants decisions is broke
Well, here it is. If Gettleman’s plan was ever going to work, he has this year to prove it. People overstate the importance of quarterbacks all the time, but this will really come down to Daniel Jones. If Jones finally becomes capable of leading this team, Gettleman’s gambits will have paid off. In a way, he’s kind of hitching his wagon to both Jones’ ability to learn and Garrett’s ability to call a productive offense. Gettleman made some bad moves in the past, and recently some good ones, but it has been a long time in finally culminating into the make or break point that this next season will be. We’ll find out whether that time spent developing the roster and several misses were worth the hits.
If the Giants can’t win the division, or at the very least secure a wildcard in the event that one of the other teams is somehow really good, the long trial with Gettleman will have been for naught and they will have to begin again under Judge. Gettleman needs to really hit on some offensive pieces this offseason and hope that Jones is the guy he thought that he was. I can’t remember a more true definition of the phrase “prove it year” than this one will be for Gettleman.
Mr. Mara, would u please leave football decisions to somebody with knowledge of the game. Please don’t make this another fiasco, he has already been called the worst g.m. In the NFL by real football people.
If you can’t turn a Big Market NFL team around after 3 years on the job, then why do you still have a job?
Pathetic!
There are no “Big Market” teams in the NFL !!
They all share the TV revenue equally. Thats whats so unique about the NFL and why it is so successful! Green Bay , WI has every competitive advantage that every team in the league has ! Try that in Baseball
