Washington head coach Ron Rivera says Taylor Heinicke will start at quarterback on Sunday against the Eagles if Alex Smith can’t play. That leaves former first-round pick Dwayne Haskins as the QB3 on the depth chart and possibly inactive for the team’s critical Week 17 game.

Haskins couldn’t deliver on Sunday when he started in place of Smith. Heinicke — who hadn’t taken an NFL snap since 2018, replaced him in the fourth quarter. Washington went on to lose 20-13, capping Haskins’ day with 14-of-28 throws completed for 154 yards, zero touchdowns, and two interceptions. Heinicke, meanwhile, went 12-for-19 for 137 passing yards and one TD.
Heinicke has been on the fringes of the NFL since going undrafted out of Old Dominion. After a brief stop in the XFL, he’s supplanted the once-ballyhooed Haskins on WFT’s depth chart. And, if Smith can’t go, he’ll have a chance to lead them to the playoffs.
Washington can clinch the division with a win over the Eagles on Sunday night. A loss would turn the NFC East race over to the winner of the afternoon Cowboys-Giants tilt.
Time for a change of scenery
Don’t think even a change of scenery will help Haskins. He’s just not good
I’m a fan of Ron but you have to be a bit dopey to expect a player to go out and perform well after you’ve just threatened to deny him his guaranteed money.
Well, if my quarterback decided to go to a strip club without a mask following a loss in the middle of a pandemic, I would be rather reluctant to pay someone that kind of money as well. Haskins has no one to blame for his lack of success but himself. Ron is doing quite a job coaching up this team considering the ineptitude at QB
Remember this was the second time. Ron should have done the right thing and made him inactive for the game. He had to deal with a diva in Carolina you would think he would clamp down fast so Haskins might not turn out as bad.
The diva in Carolina never did anything like Haskins did. Haskins’ mistake is not wearing flashy clothes or even thinking too highly of himself. It’s actively hurting his team, off the field as well as on it.
@crosseyedlemon That’s exactly what you should expect, if he doesn’t do it then he isn’t a leader or an NFL QB. Actions have consequences.
I’m sure you would work extra hard for your employer after he threatened to eliminate your company benefits. Heck, you’d probably work double shifts and ask that your vacation time be rescinded.
No, as I wouldn’t be in this situation in the first place because I’m not nearly this stupid. Haskins has blown countless chances and he rightfully got cut just a few minutes ago
That’s an entitled way of thinking. If you don’t perform at your job or you go against company policies you don’t get to keep your job and benefits. I’m not sure what your argument is.
He needed to have a fire lit under him and he needed to take that threat and perform well. Now he’s gone instead.
