Aaron Jones doesn’t want to wait much longer for a deal. With contract negotiations at an impasse, the Packers running back fired his agent and hired Drew Rosenhaus as his new representative (Twitter link via Adam Schefter of ESPN.com). He’ll make the move along with his brother, Alvin Jones, a former UTEP and Ravens linebacker.

Jones is in the final year of his rookie deal and the former fifth-round pick is in line for a serious pay bump. After averaging 5.5 yards per carry in a limited sample through his first two years, Jones has proven that he can produce as a primary back. Last year, he notched 1,084 yards on the ground with 4.6 yards per tote. This year, he’s got 800+ yards across eleven games with an average of 5.1 yards per touch. He’s a receiving threat, too, having already snagged 38 passes for 285 yards and two scores in 2020.
The fourth-year pro won’t top Christian McCaffrey‘s contract, but he’ll aim high as he looks to secure the bag. In the meantime, he’ll keep the focus on the field as the Packers look to wrap up the conference.
I love Aaron Jones but I hate paying big money for RB’s.
Rbs short careers and physical abuse of position makes for a bad investment. Rather buy a WR1 like Robinson or Godwin and get bye we a mid tier RB for the same money.
Maybe in a general context. But Aaron Jones isn’t just a run of the mill RB. We should do everything we can to extend him to a 3-4 year deal as he’s young enough. They go in decline around age 29 historically.
Think the Packers sign him? Using a 2nd rounder on Dillon suggests no…but Jones productivity might be hard to replace
Likely no cap space after extending Bakh.
Last I saw they’re somewhere between $17-19 million OVER for next year. It was unlikely they re-signed him anyway. I don’t think hiring Rosenthal improves the chances.
They could trade Aaron Rodgers. They didn’t draft Love in the 1st round to sit on the bench.
The cap hit i believe would be greater if they trade him than if they keep him.
Nevermind how dumb it would be to trade him after the season he’s having.
That’s exactly why they drafted him. Plus MLF is like I said long before the draft.. great teams are built on being robust. QB is the Queen of the chessboard and well rounded teams don’t quit when their #1 QB goes down. Everyone said I was crazy to invest 5m for a reliable backup. But that’s exactly what we did. So everyone is wrong.
That’s just the stupidest thing I’ve read this season and there’s extra stupid stuff going on all over the place this year. Congratulations!
It’s not that black n white. All teams are affected by the cap and the NFL will likely try to spread the pain over a couple years to sustain the teams who employ them. I suspect we part ways with several of Kirksey, Preston or Wagner and resign either Linsley or Jones.
Get it done GB!!
That a boy! Or girl? Or boys and girls ?
Paying RBs at the top of the market doesn’t really jive with how GB manages their personnel
Williams is a free agent too. I don’t think he’s that much worse and will cost a whole lot less. Move forward with him and Dillon
Agree. His YPC takes a hit with him being the short yardage back as well.
Williams is nowhere near comparable to Jones #1. Isn’t Williams up for a new contract? He already makes 2.1mil on a rookie deal. What would he sign for maybe double to triple that? I’ll take Jones for 12mil annual over Williams for 6mil etc.. Jones is just peaking and he’ll be dominant for at least 3 more seasons.
ZL incorrectly states that Jones is averaging 5.1 “yards per touch”. While his yards per CARRY stands at 5.1, his yards per TOUCH is 5.6. These are different metrics entirely. Every time I read a posting by ZL, it seems like he doesn’t know that much about football.
Either your too critical. Or maybe both.
Either that or you’re too critical? I’m going with the latter
Great player but we pay him we won’t have the money to pay Jaire in a few years
+ Adams
That’s not true. There’s lots of crafty ways to organize contracts. Releasing Preston Smith would gain 8mil alone just as an example. That was just off the top of my head, so let me review the entire roster and I’ll make plenty room.
In a few years Rodgers contract drops 11Mil $$. Also in a few years the league readjusts the salary cap limits towards normal. We’re not going to lose either of those players based on Jones estimated value. This isn’t a starting QB we’re talking about. He’s a RB.
The writing has always been on the wall. Aaron Jones did the right thing hiring Drew Rosenhaus. He is going to get you top dollar.
Rosenhaus has shown he has no integrity or credibility by the way he represented Antonio Brown. GMs should avoid him.
That or Jones truly wants to stay put (who wouldn’t?) and be part of something special for the next 4 years. Making a couple Mil less annual is nothing if you get a ring or 2. Players make far more on endorsements and post career opportunities and considering only current contract $ is quite naive actually. But you’re right, many agents and players don’t have long term vision or lack confidence to convince their clients. We will see.
Sounds like Jones wants to stay so hopefully they can get it done. They will find the room to get it done
If he signed Drew he wants to get the most money. Packers don’t have the cap space. He’s going to have Drew get him the biggest payday on the open marekt.
While it may be true he doesn’t remain in GB, Jones himself said he wanted to stay. Leaving for another team would not be his 1st choice. Secondly, contracts can be arranged to support a RB salary. This isn’t a DE or OT making 20+ Mil here.
He didn’t hire Drew to hammer out a new deal on GB…. he hired him so he can start preparing his Free Agent tour. GB knows they need this money for Jaire….
What are you thinking about??? He is the Best!! And crucial to our success. We have little chance without him. He is worth every dollar!!
Little chance is a bit of an embellishment. But I get your point and I agree with you.
Take the third-round compensatory pick. Next man up.
Keep the cap space for receivers, offensive line and defensive ends. Paying running backs rich contracts is a fool’s game. Saquon Barkley might be the exception. But even Barkley’s injured with a torn ACL after two years in the NFL and may never be the same when he returns.
There’s no guarantee they get a 3rd. Stats, playing time and accolades are secondary and tertiary factors in deciding compensatory values. blake got us a 4th snd he signed a 11Mil contract.
