The Packers and Aaron Jones have had recent extension talks, according to ESPN.com’s Rob Demovsky (on Twitter). Apparently, Jones hasn’t been thrilled about the status of those discussions. The running back fired his agent as his expiration date draws near.
The former fifth-round pick is drastically underpaid in the home stretch of his four-year, $2.6MM deal. Last year, he made his case with 1,558 total yards from scrimmage, an average of 4.6 yards per carry, and and 19 total touchdowns to lead all running backs in the NFL. This year, he’s been slowed by injuries somewhat, but he’s still managed nearly 1,110 all-purpose yards with 5.1 ypc.
Jones has been one of the NFL’s best backs over the past few years and he plans on getting a contract to reflect his performance. As shown by Joe Mixon‘s recent $12MM/year extension with the Bengals and Christian McCaffrey‘s record-shattering deal, teams are still willing to pony up the cash necessary to lock down their best offensive talent. The running back market, at long last, may even catch up to the rest of the field.
After topping the Lions 31-24, Jones and the Packers are even further ahead in the NFC North. They’ll look to keep their winning streak alive on Saturday night when they face the Panthers in Green Bay.
Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase.
Everybody has a price for him
Well hopefully this is a good thing. As long as Jones wants to get it done and he got mad that he wasn’t doing the job
Hopefully his new agent gets Aaron paid. Guys earned it
Nice reporting. You managed not to mention the name of either Jones’ former or new agency. As usual, you did manage to interject some of your own opinions.
Hey did anyone ever hear how his twin brothers try out went? You would have thought the Packers would have at least to put him on the practice squad. Yes he has earned the money he is going to get just hope it’s with the Packers otherwise we will be seeing him in Dallas
Why would Dallas, who already paid zeke clown money, double down and give RB1 money to Jones?
He’s going to leave the Pack. They drafted Dillon, need to get a CB2 (or re-sign King), and have scant cap space.
They’re currently somewhere between $17-19 million over for next year. It won’t just be free agents leaving GB…
When you have as much money invested in both your QB and left tackle as Green Bay does, paying eight figures a year for a RB is a luxury you can’t afford and never planned on affording which is why AJ Dillon was taken in the 2nd round. You also don’t take a RB in round two if you don’t plan on him being your RB1 or at least your RB1b almost immediately. You don’t take running backs to wait in the wings for 3 or 4 years. Every sign points to there being virtually NO chance Jones comes back and honestly although he’s an outstanding back, they’d be foolish to invest that much in the running back position with the kind of holes this team has and the salary cap situation they are in. And don’t forget Davante Adams contract is coming up in 2022.
