Daniel Jones is iffy to return for the Giants’ Week 16 game against the Ravens, and he his numbers have taken a steep dive in Jason Garrett‘s offense this season. But Joe Judge backed the current Big Blue starter as his 2021 quarterback.
When asked Wednesday about Jones’ status as the Giants’ starter beyond this season, Judge responded, “Daniel Jones is our quarterback.”
Kyle Shanahan took a similar route when asked about Jimmy Garoppolo‘s job, and Jones has two years remaining on his rookie deal and a 2023 option season. But the Giants received criticism since the start of Jones’ tenure — which began with a No. 6 overall pick — and have seen him struggle often in his second season. The Duke product threw 24 touchdown passes — fourth-most ever for a rookie — in 2019 despite making just 12 starts. Through 12 starts this year, Jones has thrown eight TD passes and has added 10 more fumbles to his eye-popping career total (28).
The Giants do not have to decide on Jones’ fifth-year option until May 2022, though those are higher-stakes decisions due to the options being fully guaranteed beginning with the 2018 first-round class. But the team is set to pick in the top half of the draft — barring major changes in the NFC East picture over the final two games — and would be in position to potentially add another quarterback.
“To me it’s a string of moments watching Daniel work. Watching the respect he has in the locker room. Watching him lead throughout this season. I think he’s demonstrated a level of toughness and leadership and knowledge on the field that gives us confidence to put him out there and build with Daniel, Judge said, via ESPN.com’s Jordan Raanan.
Gotta give a guy a few years to develope.
Regardless of what development time he needs or merits, he’s got one more season to convince them it’s worth picking up his fifth year option, which will be something like $25 million.
Great summation, Ooof. He does need time to develop, but this year is the year that he’s got.
Colt McCoy should get those years!
What has he shown you that makes you think he can “develop” into anything other than a backup? He’s Chase Daniel 2.0
He already has more passing stats than Chase Daniels, and plays a wildly different style. Not sure at all where you’re getting that from.
Believe it or not, QBs don’t actually hit their prime immediately. So, while Jones may not end up being any good, he certainly has time to change. As a first round pick, it’d be foolish to pull the plug after less than two full seasons. After three years, you generally get an idea whether the upside will ever develop further. This whole “he’s not good now, so he’ll never be” is not always true.
Dude he fumbles the ball every time he gets hit, all his potential means nothing when he fumbles constantly, 28 career fumbles ends every other players career except a 6th overall quarterback, he sucks and he will never be good
Still not Chase Daniel though….?
Yeah, he fumbled a lot. No, he’s not done developing. No, I’m not saying that there’s any guarantee he’ll end up worth it. But no, he’s not done.
Brad, there have been a few good quarterbacks who were not game managers. I don’t think anyone would accuse Favre of being one. Someone a bit closer to Jones’ level would be the Giants’ last franchise QB, and they got two Super Bowls out of him. Again, not saying Jones will end up being one, but it’s not necessarily a requirement. They should give him another year. What do they lose? The roster still needs a lot of help. Worst thing that happens is they pick high again to either get a new QB with a better roster and better staff than Jones had or Jones ends up good. Throwing your hands in the air and giving up after less than two seasons of full starts for a first rounder is premature.
When has developing someone who can’t even be a game manager works out?
I’m sorry, but Gettleman likely missed on this pick and this franchise will be set back until they realize that. He may turn out to be decent, but they’re not going far into the playoffs with him. As a Giants fan, I’m looking forward to Gettleman getting fired.
Same here. Even if they make the playoffs, Gettleman should go.
Agreed, he needs to go. He’s made five 1st round picks. One of them is not on the team, Barkley is hurt, Jones is still tbd, and Thomas is a work in progress and may be the weakest of the top Oline drafted players this year. Lawrence has been very good. Not a good track record so far. Whatever the reasoning is for each of them the bottom line is the results. Getty was rebuilding and competing at the same time and that is why 4 straight losing seasons. Can’t be a rebuilding team and have the team stuck in a bad cap situation, with limited draft capital.
i mean, i doubt they will get a top 2 pick so who else would start?
They can bring a free agent in to compete. A lot of QBs will be released or traded this offseason.
they need a long term QB, not a bandaid. if they think they’re better off going for it rather the building for the future next year then as a fan of a division rival i say more power to you.
Wonder boy
Colt McCoy!
He will surprise!
(I am not affiliated

in any way…..).
There’s 4-5 good QBs in this draft. All better than Jones
A) he has to say this, why on earth would he say anything else right now? B) depending on what they do with Gettleman, Judge may have no say on who his QB is. C) What are their options? They’re going to be drafting 10-15th (probably). Who would they draft? They have so many needs, drafting another QB in the first would be dumb. And who could they sign? Jameis Winston? Unlikely.
They’ll prob stick with Jones another year, but I could see them upgrading the backup spot. Winston is under contract. But we could see a lot of QB changing teams – Rivers, Stafford, Ryan, Fitzpatrick, Dalton, Prescott, Jimmy G., Wentz, Trubisky, and Darnold could all be on different teams in 2021.
Colt Mccoy should get a chance!
Over a couple of seasons!
He will grow!
He’s already 34 fn years old. I can’t tell if you’re dumb or drunk.
He’s to old we should draft a young one
Daniel Jones has a lot to show, because if you think of who the Giants could’ve drafted instead it’s upsetting:
2019- DE Josh Allen
2020- QB Justin Herbert
Yes! Exactly what I’ve been saying. Also D.Lawrence is good but was a reach and could have taken him instead of Baker. We could have had Montez Sweat in that 17 spot. And I’ll take it back even a year earlier in 2018 instead of Barkley – Bradley Chubb or Quentin Nelson.
I think we need to get him a true number 1 WR. Between Slayton, Tate, and Shepherd we don’t have a true number 1 on the team. If Chase, Smith or Waddle fall to our pick we should consider taking a reliable target for Jones. Thomas looked great against Garrett last week, plus adding some more quality starters to the defense would make this team into a real good looking squad. Plus I don’t know if Jason Garrett was a signing intended to be the long term play caller for NY under Judges staff. Wouldn’t be surprised if Judge fires him after the year to get a OC that runs a different playbook than Garrett
If the Giants decide to replace Gettleman at GM (and they should) then both Judge and Jones will probably be the collateral damage.
Judge is going absolutely nowhere. There is no chance on earth he’s fired, regardless of what happens with Gettleman. About Judge:
-Ownership loves him
-players love him
-fans love him
-the media even likes him
-he’s squeezed at least five wins out of a team with some of the worst QB play in the league and missing their best player (Barkley)
-Giants do not fire coaches after one season
Jones I can see being ‘collateral damage’ (although I don’t think he’s going anywhere, either). But unless he quits, Judge will be coaching the Giants in 2021.
Depends on how much control the Giants are willing to cede to the GM that replaces Gettleman. If they go with a control freak who only wants his own people then Judge becomes a lame duck.
Gettleman is a total flop; everybody knows it. But Judge hasn’t looked TOO bad; they’re playing to their talent level, at least (some coaches can’t even get there). And Jones is just going to be one of those whose going to take a while, if it happens at all.
Hey let’s face it; not having Saquon hurt, big time. And there’s enough draft busts on the roster to fill a boat. Get a new GM, and let’s see what we’ve really got here.
