The Buccaneers are set to sign quarterback Drew Stanton to the practice squad, as Peter Schrager of NFL.com tweets. Stanton played under head coach Bruce Arians with the Cardinals, so he’ll provide a mix of familiarity and insurance somewhere behind Tom Brady.
Stanton, 36, first entered the league in 2007 as a second-round pick of the Lions. He hasn’t quite lived up to his Michigan State hype, but he has been a practice field fave for many coaches around the league. All in all, he has 38 career appearances to his credit, including 17 starts.
His last live action came in 2017 on Arians’ Cardinals team, but he’s been in the NFL orbit over the last few years. Stanton’s two-year Browns contract in 2018 didn’t lead to any snaps, but he did find himself in the news as a part of last year’s Freddie Kitchens drama. Stanton — the third-string QB — was rumored to have a significant hand in the team’s game plan. That didn’t sit well with star Odell Beckham Jr., offensive coordinator Todd Monken, and many others in the locker room.
Of course, Stanton isn’t expected to siphon offensive control from Arians or Brady, who will be aiming to clinch a playoff berth on Saturday against the Lions.
All-time Detroit Lions’ great?
Yeah, he’s right up there with Stoney Case.
Finally gonna bench Brady.
Did the NFL really up it’s steroid testing program this year?
Brady, Brees, Ben all falling off a cliff at the same time after years of defying age.
Brady has nearly 4,000 yards and 32 TDs with two games to go. Higher completion % than his career average and his Y/A and Y/C are right in line with his career numbers.
Brees had a bunch of cracked ribs and a punctured lung. He’s still leading the league in completion % (higher than his career average), his passer rating is higher than his career average, and he’s got a 21-4 TD-INT ratio.
Neither of them are falling off any cliff this year.
Ben is supposedly dealing with injuries and is still putting up good numbers despite having lost a step. I sincerely doubt steroid testing has anything to do with his performance.
I don’t think you know what term “falling off a cliff” means if you think those 3 qbs have done so this season
really Bell? this a little out there for you. did the trade take thar much out of you?
The trade sapped his intelligence.
I’ve watched, like, 9 NFL games this year, including Steelers games.
Last I heard, people were saying Brady was done, so I assumed he finally stopped using…”avocado ice cream.”
If true that he is playing well again, so be it…I’ll assume he resumed said usage.
I hadn’t seen any of the Steelers recent losses until I saw a bit of the Bengals game, I think it is clear that Ben’s “arm” issues are really his knee.
Why would you make a claim based on 9 random games that you have seen instead of looking up their stats?
Fair question.
Looking up stats and then putting them in context to get an accurate picture is a lot of work for something you care so little about that you only watch nine games or so.
Conversely, tossing out a random “hot take” and allowing the internet to correct you is quick and efficient.
For some guys it’s always doping. Don’t look at any “stats” like sacks or total hits but watch a game today and watch one from maybe the 70s or 80s and you’ll know exactly why three HOF qbs could play at a higher level. The NFL has changed the rules to sell high scoring(not taking from any of these three qbs stats I just by era and winning)from violence. If your my age or even close or older you know the old nfl films popular ones were biggest hits. Ask Lyle Alzado if he thinks qbs are the issues with roids
These same exact arguments and comments went down with Peyton Manning a few years back. It was then brought to light that he was ordering HGH through his wife. Peyton retired prior to the release of all the documentation thus changing his playing status.
Just saying….
Two Michigan State guys
Whose the two from state? You know Michigan and Michigan state are separate universities right? Think about before you comment
might be talkn bout william gholston.
At this point in the year it can be about experience both in career and in a system that drives who gets signed
“Stanton — the third-string QB — was rumored to have a significant hand in the team’s game plan”.
“Significant” as in he was the guy sent off on coffee and donut runs for the people actually making decisions.
Stanton will get himself a really nice pension. He is living the good life and will be smiling as the pension checks flow timely.
