Seahawks tight end Greg Olsen has been diagnoses with a a plantar fascia injury, according to head coach Pete Carroll. The injury could spell the end of Olsen’s season and, in turn, his career. For his part, Olsen is hoping to recover in time for the playoffs, though the Seahawks would probably have to make a deep run to make that happen (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport).
Olsen suffered the non-contact injury in the fourth quarter of last night’s game and had to be helped to the sidelines. Even before he was carted into the locker room, team doctors knew that Olsen’s injury was fairly serious.
The 35-year-old joined the Seahawks on a one-year, $7MM deal this offseason, though he also has a placeholder deal with FOX Sports to start his broadcasting career once he’s done playing. Olsen also experienced foot trouble late in his Panthers tenure. He missed 16 games between the 2017-18 campaigns because of multiple foot issues. After lots of rehab, he managed to play in 14 games last year.
In nine Panthers seasons, Olsen cemented himself as one the best players in franchise history. He eclipsed 1,000 yards en route to three Pro Bowls from 2014-16 and helped the Panthers to a 15-1 season that produced an NFC championship. From 2007 through 2019, Olsen registered 8,444 receiving yards — third-most in the NFL among tight ends in that span. With the Seahawks, he’s caught 23 passes for 224 yards and one touchdown through ten games.
Good thing the Seahawks are loaded with depth at the position. I’m sure Dissly and Hollister will be able to pick up the slack. Don’t forget they drafted Parkinson and Sullivan as well.
As for Olsen, I feel for him, as he has consistently put forth a tremendous effort and deserves accolades for his amazing Carolina tenure
the injury bug isnt too kind to this guy
Ow!
Another Bear down
Time to fire the Dissmissle!!
Big Montana
Seattle has a tough time when they sign big name TEs. Olsen wasn’t playing particularly well. He started the whole Wilson int problem with the pick six that went off his hands. Just kidding but that was the first pick of the year.
Like Wagner said they have a few in reserve though. Tough to have Wilsson signed the day Olsen goes down. I doubt we lose much with this injury. The guy seems like a good guy one of a few Panthers I liked. He should ask to be cut and go into a booth or studio when he can. He might be one that is decent to listen to.
His contract was a bit of a head scratcher when you consider the fact that we had 4 TE’s and desperately needed help on the D-Line. As it happened our budget approach/ plan B to FA DE’s backfired but that led us to acquiring Dunlap and Harrison. It could also be argued the Olsen contract took FA $$ away from increasing our offer to a certain Mr J Clowney. Olsen’s production has for the most part has been underwhelming. For those fans who are frustrated with Olsen’s lackluster production- think of the serendipity in the way the dominoes fell- Clowney is not on our IR and we most likely wouldn’t have Dunlap and Harrison without him.
