Clemson star Trevor Lawrence says he’s still undecided on whether to enter the 2021 NFL Draft, as ESPN.com’s David M. Hale writes. Meanwhile, NFL executives tell ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter that they have no doubt about Lawrence’s future plans.
“You have a better chance of winning the Boston Marathon than he does of going back to school,” one source told Schefter.
Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney recently expressed similar sentiments, admitting that he’d “be surprised” if Lawrence, the projected No. 1 pick, returns to campus next year. For his part, Lawrence says he isn’t interested in discussing his plans any further, noting that he wants to enjoy the rest of the year and focus on his return to the field.
Clemson managed to beat Boston College without Lawrence under center but they came up short in Saturday’s thriller against Notre Dame. The good news is that Lawrence is set to return after completing the NCAA’s COVID-19 protocol.
The Jets and Jaguars are keeping a watchful eye on Lawrence, who has been hailed as a generational talent.
“I’ve honestly never seen anything like him,” one NFL quarterbacks coach told Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller this week. “You’ve seen guys with a bigger arm, and you’ve seen guys who are faster, but I’ve never seen a prospect who has every trait you need and has them at a high level.”
Really hope he survives 5 years and multiple franchise tags so we can see all that potential in the 2030s with a decent team.
Trevor is watching and waiting, hoping the Jets somehow win a game or two so they won’t be picking #1. If they are, he should go back to Clemson. This guy is too special to get ruined by the Jets Jetness.
Been saying for months, he is pulling an Eli. We just saw Tua slip because of injury, so he gets the deal and tells Jets to go fly in traffic.
Appalachian_Outlaw It’s not like the Jaguars have a ton of recent success and a reputation of being a well run team either. They have 2017 and that’s it. People were saying the same stuff about Burrow, yet here we are today, Burrow is in Cincy.
I’m not going to try and paint Jacksonville as a model franchise, but I see them as slighlty more competent. They’ve built some good teams. They just haven’t really had much luck finding QBs to run them.
If the Jets are so terrible aren’t they just gonna have the first pick in 2022?
he better demand Gase be fired in his rookie contract
That’s going to happen already. I think the organization is going to do a complete reboot, starting with Lawrence. Darnold can be had for a late first rounder from a team like Pittsburgh. Add in the fact they have $80M in cap room, they can focus on the offensive line and receivers to set Lawrence up for success.
As for Lawrence, going back could equal $50M, possibly more in his total career earnings. Not sure that’s worth not getting selected by a bad team, not to mention if he did go back, there’s a good (solid) chance the Jets could have the top pick…again.
What has Darnold done to deserved to be flipped for a 1st? Not picking on you, but he’s a career backup.
Lol @ darnold being worth a first
Sam Darnold’s mom isn’t trading a first round pick for him.
Here is the deal Trevor Lawrence wants to enter the draft but he’s going to use the thought of returning to school as a negotiating tool if the New York Jets get the top pick. His people will tell them “if you are thinking of selecting Trevor just know this if you do he is returning to Clemson“.
Thanks for explaining the situation.
“Ok, we’ll draft him next year then.”
– Jets
Thats as funny as it is true
Not accurate at ALL. As soon as he declares for the NFL draft he is DONE at Clemson. Can’t return. The jets could just say “we don’t know yet who we want” and as soon as TL declares, he is stuck in the NFL. Now, he could play the elway, Manning route and force his way off the jets, but returning to Clemson is NOT an option once he declares. (Which is in Jan and the draft is in May.)
correct
Translation: He doesn’t want to go to the Jets
And what…go to the Jaguars instead because their front office is SO much more in order than in NY?
If this kid is smart, he’d kill to be drafted by the Jets…..aside from the rookie contract, by the time 5 years are over, he will have made a fortune from NY endorsements which won’t happen nearly to the same extent if he goes to the Jags!
Pretty sure the top pick gets a guaranteed 35 million or so…endorsements are nice, but just being selected sets him and his family up for life.
Excellent pony
*Excellent point
The Jags are light years ahead of the Jets
Lawrence should want to go to NY. He can be the generational talent that turns them around. Indianapolis was no prize when they picked Manning and he made them great. The Jets organization sucks but the QB’s they had have been trash. Franchises picking number 1 usually have a lot of issues. Jacksonville is a worse franchise than NY and if not, they’re clearly 1 & 2. And even if this kid doesn’t want to play in NY pick him anyway. He doesn’t have a choice. Play for us in the NFL or don’t play in the NFL. Call his bluff if he actually makes it, which he won’t.
Is there any better way of jinxing a player’s future career than labelling him as a “generational talent”?
Yes, going to the Jets.
You people have no clue at all… FACT
If he’s smart and that confident in himself, he should want to go to jets. Turn around the jets & he will be a savior in NY & make a fortune while becoming the face of the NFL.
Jets have joe d and 9 picks in rounds 1-3 over next 2 drafts. Couple that with ample cap space & they can field a competitive team rather quickly.
I do agree fire Gase, probably after the season though.
Calm down with the Jets talk. The Jets will be replacing their HC in the off-season and there will be a new regime drafting this kid. He’ll be perfectly fine with the Jets, relax.
