The Giants are barreling toward their fourth consecutive 10-loss season, a streak that would represent a new low for the franchise. Rumblings of the team considering a GM change have surfaced.
Were the Giants to fire third-year GM Dave Gettleman, they would have interest in Patriots executive Nick Caserio, Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports. Caserio has been on the Giants’ radar for some time, and many around the league expect the team to have a GM vacancy soon.
Recently given a Patriots extension, Caserio will nevertheless be an in-demand GM candidate — which has been the case for a while. His new contract does not contain language that prevents him from interviewing for GM posts, which became an issue for the Texans last year. Caserio, however, has resurfaced as a Texans GM candidate. While the Texans have ex-Pats exec Jack Easterby running the show currently, the Giants also have key employees Caserio knows well.
Joe Judge and defensive coordinator Patrick Graham spent extensive time in New England, and some believe the Giants’ northeastern location would appeal to Caserio, JLC adds. Caserio has been in his current role — Patriots director of player personnel — since 2008.
Additionally, some within the Giants organization believe Gettleman should have been fired after last season. The team’s rebuild has not taken off under the ex-Panthers GM. The Giants, however, have given extensive time to their GMs, per La Canfora. In the modern era, the franchise’s shortest GM tenure came when Hall of Famer Andy Robustelli lasted only four years (1974-78). He presided over the organization’s previous modern-era low point, with George Young, Ernie Accorsi and Jerry Reese enjoying far more successful tenures. Giants ownership, however, may be preparing to change course sooner than expected after the team’s second 1-7 start in three years.
He didn’t want the Texans’ job, is it cause he’s the heir apparent to the GM role in New England? Is NYG that much more appealing?
The way he has drafted in NE I am fine with him leaving. Hopefully drafts would improve. That’s assuming he had a lot of input with BB which I believe he did.
Right!?
Who knows how great Caserio really is without Belichick. And given how the Patriots have drafted lately… NEXT.
Can’t win all the time every time.
Stick with Gettleman. He’s drafted boatloads of good players and has many recent hits in FA. We have the right coach but I want DG drafting in 2021.
Gettleman has drafted tremendously. Somewhere close to 20 draft picks are still on the team. Time will tell how good they are going forward. Great signings in Martinez, Bradberry and Gano. Coach Judge is the right coach and will turn things around. Getting rid of OBJ was a crown achievement setting the ground work for a coach like Judge to establish a team first approach. Even the one day stay at home with Mrs Tate sets the tone. Hope Golden has Mrs. Tate throw him some passes.
Sticking with Judge, Gettleman and Jones just assures the team will have another top 5 pick in the 2022 draft. I’m not sure how it could be said he’s drafted “tremendously.” The team is weak all over, Jones has essentially no targets, Jones himself is a third string backup and a complete waste of a pick that high, Judge is not “the right coach” and will be coaching at Florida Atlantic at this rate. I’ve got zero faith he’s building a new culture or anything. And having 20 picks still on the team… ok, but is that because of excellence or lack of options?? And we’ve seen Gettleman be INCREDIBLY stubborn about his bad moves, so that’s not entirely surprising. Yeah, OBJ was a pain in the ass, but come on. When someone’s crown achievement is moving a player like that because he’s a bit of a diva, it’s time to find a new gig. Assuming he was healthy, I’d take the Browns over the Giants for the next several years. Speaking of healthy, nothing like taking a running back in this era that high. Barkley is a great talent but not with a pick that high. Gettleman’s looking at the game from a different decade.
Wow Jones is a third string QB yet the team has no targets. If the team had great targets would that make Jones a second string QB? Coach Judge has coached 8 games with no AOT’s, no normal training camp, no pre season but he is not the right coach, and will be coaching at Florida Atlantic because he is not building a new culture. Doesn’t sound like Florida Atlantic would be smart signing such a failure. True enough having 20 picks left on roster may be because Of Judges inability to build a new culture so they kept players from the past culture. Not sure if you think the Browns are that bad or O’Dell is that good since he is hurt. Are you saying it was stupid to take Barkley that high because he is hurt. If he wasn’t hurt would it be ok to draft him 2nd. Are you saying that Gettleman is to old fashioned to be a GM in today’s game. Does getting a team to the super bowl count towards a old way of doing things or a modern way? If they do get rid of Judge, Gettleman and Jones will that mean they will have to find a new third string QB.? Will the new GM have to take lessons on how to be a modern thinker? Will the new coach have to have experience in building cultures or should he have coached a year at Florida Atlantic to prove he is both a right coach for the Giants and at the same time be a new culture extraordinaire? Just asking
“If the team had great targets would that make Jones a second string QB? ”
If he had targets he’d certainly be doing better, but my point was he’s not a starter; he’s a backup and was a total waste of a first round pick.
“Doesn’t sound like Florida Atlantic would be smart signing such a failure. ”
You’re being rather pedantic about a throwaway example of the fact this guy is also not ready for primetime is probably more suited to be coaching a lower division one school.
“Are you saying it was stupid to take Barkley that high because he is hurt. If he wasn’t hurt would it be ok to draft him 2nd. ”
No, I’m saying drafting a running back at #2 in modern football is dumb, esp when you’re in a rebuild. RBs don’t have a long shelf life. They weren’t 1 or 2 pieces away from being competitive. The 2nd best RB in that draft went to the pats who were picking in the high 20s.
“Are you saying that Gettleman is to old fashioned to be a GM in today’s game. ”
It’s “too old fashioned,” and yes, he is. The game has passed him by.
“Does getting a team to the super bowl count towards a old way of doing things or a modern way?”
Five years ago on the back of an MVP QB, and we saw what happened after. Nada.
“Will the new GM have to take lessons on how to be a modern thinker? ”
Common sense would dictate they’d hire someone who’s actually qualified to work in that role in 2021, and part of that qualification would be showing they understand the modern game.
Your next to closing sentence is just sort of bouncing around, again, a throwaway reference I made. I think my point was pretty clear.
Let us also not forget how Gettleman bumbled the Matt Rhule situation. Embarrassing.
I think Judge is the right guy. He’s taking a team short on talent and has them prepared, motivated, and competitive each game in year 1.
Gettleman on the other hand is a mixed bag. He couldn’t decide if the team was rebuilding or competing. The last 4 years this team has the worst record in the league. I wouldn’t have taken Barkley at 2 simply because he is more of the missing piece to a team that is ready to win now. I would have traded down a few spots, acquired more draft capital and taken Quentin Nelson for the Oline. He was projected before the draft to be wearing the gold jacket. In 19 I would taken Josh Allen for the pass rush. Jacksonville was shocked he fell to them. Now you have anchors on each side of the line. Take the QB at 17 instead of 6.
On some of the positives – he hit on Slayton, Lorenzo Carter and BJ Hill look decent, Martinez and Bradberry good signings. Let’s not forget get while he traded OBJ this is the same guy that signed him 6 months earlier.
4 out of his 5 first round picks are questions marks. Jury still out on Jones, Barkley injured this year and last year now entering year 4 on the rookie deal. Baker is off the team, Thomas has struggled, and while Lawrence has looked good was a reach when pass rush was much more needed.
Getty traded precious draft picks for Williams and Olgetree, and wasted a 4th round pick on Lauletta. Signing of Solder and Omameh was a disaster. Overpaid for Golden Tate when should be rebuilding. Between this year and last year only moved Markus Golden for a pick at the deadline when there should have been more players moved for picks. Especially ones that are not part of the teams plans long term. Only 6 picks in next years draft, and they do not have the greatest cap situation. So there is a lot of work to be done.
I mostly agree with this outside of thinking that Judge is the right guy and that the jury’s out on Jones. Give him the rest of the season since it’s over, anyway, but if he doesn’t show a MASSIVE turnaround, they have to move on. Any other team in the league would. Also wouldn’t say Gettleman is a mixed bag, even based on what you wrote: those positives (a couple of good signings and “look decent”) don’t outweigh, to me, all of the other things you mention. There’s no light at the end of this tunnel if things stay where they are.
Giant fans are suffering from the super bowl blues. Eight years of post super bowl failure is causing them to become irrational. Because New York fans believe that they are ENTITLED to be #1 in every sport. They are proud to announce that it is going to be hard to play in New York. Most fans are just what fan represents fanatics. They voice their opinions as experts but in reality are novice. It becomes a battle to see who knows more the fan or the media. Sadly the real life attempts to mold a team or aid a player in reaching their potential is lost. The players are thought to be like fantasy players where you hit a button and move on to the next player. Fire the coach he sucks. I always wonder if their bosses deal with them like they deal with athletes or teams. Is there no room for allowing a player to grow into their job? Especially in a year that has been played after no preseason or even normal training camps. New head coach and almost new coaching staff, new schemes, no pre season to implement them. QB playing for his third head coach in three years ( senior year at Duke ) Doesn’t those situations allow for a little time to truly evaluate anything?
There’s nothing “irrational” about not wanting your team to be the worst team in the worst division in football, AGAIN. This isn’t “post superbowl blues,” like some NE fans have right now, after 20 dominate seasons. This is an organization we care about that’s been circling the drain for at least 5 years. Yes, to be entirely fair, the problems pre-date Gettleman, but that doesn’t let him off the hook; he hasn’t improved anything. For the record, I’m not a NYer, nor a NY sports fan (I only like one other NY team) so let’s not pretend this is all crazy people calling into WFAN and ranting; the majority of people who observe the team seem to agree with this. I read a piece from last year when I was looking something up to write one of my posts and there was a great quote that sums it up. To paraphrase, “for an organization who’s always fancied itself in lock step with the Steelers, they’ve really become the Browns.” And I’d say, overall, the Browns have been better run over the past few years. I’m not looking for the Giants in the superbowl, I’m looking to not be the bottom dwellers.
“Sadly the real life attempts to mold a team or aid a player in reaching their potential is lost.”
Do you watch other teams? Do you see the way other organizations are turning teams around in just a couple of years? The Niners are crippled this year, but look at them over the past several. It’s the way the game works now. And I’d have more faith to “trust the process” and give it time if they’d given me any reason to. I’ve got no confidence in Gettleman to not blow another first round pick this coming spring, and no reason to think he won’t again in 2022 if this configuration continues. I’d have faith in a 2nd year QB in these conditions, if I thought there was any reason to draft him that high in the first place; Kyle Murray he isn’t.
The Giants have had one winning season in last 8 years. The team is the youngest team in the league. You say that Barkley was a bad pick because of the lowering of a running back’s value yet, if you look at the Rams when Curley was at his peak he made Goff look like an all star. In effect G just reversed the order, running back then the QB. Defensive run defense is very strong, Leonard Williams has been very good. Martinez is a monster tackler. Love Peppers attitude and aggressiveness.
Defense is light years better then last year. Obviously needs work but isn’t being young and improving what eventually produces positive results?
Did you have the same attitude about Jones last year, obviously he has to clean up the TO’s
Why isn’t the lack of pre season three years of three different schemes a reason for pause with all the instability a cause for holding your water about Jones. Saying Thomas was a bad pick in spite of the sentiment having him as the most NFL ready tackle is a little premature
They have played against the Steelers, Bears, Rams and Bucs, each having a very good D and pass rush. Even wash with Young putting a lot of pressure on Jones
Giant fans have a chronic losing attitude waiting for a mistake to criticize .
Young team, pieces in place, waiting for possible improvement, needing patience

Blow it up again, new coach third coach on four years, new G M
Yep, I thought Jones was a bad pick, was bad last year, and is bad this year. He’s not an NFL starter, hard stop. You want to give him a third go-round to demonstrate this? He looks entirely out of his depth out there.
Curley was w/ Rams before Goff and frankly, the Rams were in a better position when they picked him than Giants were.
You keep citing the lack of pre season, but even awful Washington looks better with a new coach. Same with Panthers with a new coach and new QB. Granted, Bridgewater has more experience, but we’re not talking Elway in his prime here, he’s basically a journeyman.
Giants fans have the longest posts ever on this site. Net it out. “If I had more time, it would have been shorter”. Losing Barq hurt them terribly. Dave G…..comes across as a dufuss. Eli sucks…..from a chargers fan.
