The league is coming down swiftly on Bears receiver Javon Wims for the punches he threw at Chauncey Gardner-Johnson Sunday. Wims is being suspended for two games, the NFL announced Monday.
You can read the full explanation in the league’s release here. Wims was ejected after bizarrely attacking the Saints cornerback and swinging wildly at him. Wims told team officials that Gardner-Johnson spit on him and ripped his mouthpiece out earlier in the game prior to the incident, sources told Tom Pelissero of NFL Network (Twitter link).
The Georgia product plans to appeal his suspension, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network notes (Twitter link). Gardner-Johnson apparently has a knack for getting under people’s skin, as he was on the receiving end of teammate Michael Thomas‘ punch during practice that got Thomas suspended for a game by the Saints.
Wims is a 2018 seventh-round pick from Georgia who played a significant role on offense last year. Appearing in all 16 games with six starts, he turned 39 targets into only 18 receptions for 186 yards and one touchdown. So far this year he has five catches for 35 yards and a score.
Wims definitely deserves the suspension but no punishment for Gardner-Johnson is a joke. It’s obvious players talk smack and develop feuds with each other throughout their careers. It’s also obvious Gardner-Johnson is a dirty player and has done more than smack talk opponents and his own teammates…Suspend him.
Suspend him for what exactly? Getting sucker punched?
For instigating the fight a few plays earlier but ripping the mouth guard off the WRs helmet!! CJGJ definitely deserves a 1-game suspension for being the one to insitgate that fight!
Not defending Wims in any way, but Gardner-Johnson has instigated fights with others, even his own teammate.
So G Tate and Ramsey can have bench clearing brawls and only be fined, but this dude is suspended? It would be really nice if the league actually had rules and guidelines rather than whimsical responses.
I thought he would have beens suspended for longer. He ran across the field and sucker punched the guy.
The Bears should have cut him. This isn’t a top flight player he is a 5th receiver and special teams guy. He cost the team with his stupidity
You’re saying that he should be cut for what he did because he isnt a top flight player? So in your mind if a player like Bacon Wims does this … He can hit the road … but if a star player like Khalil Mack had done this … eh no big deal? So in your mind superstars should get preferential treatment?
You missed the first sentence where he said “cut” him. Fines and suspensions don’t play favorites.
Yes because he adds nothing to the team. So if he is going to be a distraction or a net negative why keep him? There’s dozens of guys like him looking for a team.
Agree. Not that big of a loss?
well that’s what you get for sticking up for a teammate i guess
I hope he doesn’t get cut or anything from this. I hate seeing one bad mistake ruin/end a career. Was a bad look though. He could’ve just pulled the mouth piece and he would’ve “won” the confrontation in my books.i hope the best for him
I would have cut his ass as his stupidity cost them the game
Unless he was going to take over on the offensive line, quarterback, or as the play caller, this didn’t cost them the game.
Yes he did his actions stalled out a drive and lead to the saints scoring 10 straight points .
The bears were moving the ball on that drive but his actions put them 15 yards backwards
