Texans head coach/GM Bill O’Brien has come under intense scrutiny for his management of his club’s roster, especially after this offseason’s infamous DeAndre Hopkins trade. O’Brien did cede play-calling duties to offensive coordinator Tim Kelly, but in the wake of Houston’s 0-3 start to the season, the head coach is renewing his involvement in that side of the operation.
As Ian Rapoport of NFL.com writes, O’Brien will take on an increased role in game-planning and play-calling. Kelly will continue to relay the plays to QB Deshaun Watson, but O’Brien will have significant input into which plays are called. That means that Houston’s offense will run more like it did in 2019, which ended in a trip to the divisional round of the playoffs.
The Texans’ offense has sputtered without Hopkins, and the team currently ranks near the bottom of the league in terms of total offense and yards per game. Still, the club has more offensive talent than that showing would suggest, and O’Brien apparently believes he can help get more production out of that unit.
Houston has started the season in an 0-3 hole, but since its first three opponents have a combined 8-1 record, no one is panicking just yet. Still, an 0-4 start would put an even bigger damper on the Texans’ playoff aspirations, and O’Brien is trying to make sure that doesn’t happen. His club will take on the Vikings this afternoon in a battle of talented but winless outfits.
does he own a share of the team or something?
O’Brien is the biggest problem Houston has, rarely is he the solution.
“What could possibly go wrong?”

With his trade history, I wouldn’t put this guy in charge of watching paint dry
I wonder if this is a sign someone’s seat is getting a little warm in Houston?
Bill O’Brien job could be in jeopardy. This guy should have been fired four or five years ago and trading Hopkins as well as possibly starting the season 0-4 could be the straw that broke the camels back.
He must have some blackmail on the owner
If you win your division you can avoid being fired….unfortunately for Bill, the rest of the division is finally improving
I don’t get. There’s obviously someone above him with this team, they should’ve blocked that ridiculous trade of Hopkins and fired him on the spot. Now this team is significantly worse. I feel bad for Watson, he has to deal with bad play calling and a roster that seems to get worse every year since his first season and good ol’ BOB hasn’t shown that he has what it takes to turn this around. I can only see it getting worse. Wouldn’t be shocked if they traded Watt to a contending team at the trade deadline at this point. Never know with this guy.
When you walk into O’Brien’s office, he has Frank Sinatra singing “I did it my way” on a loop. As a Texan fan, he is such a frustrating coach. During his tenure, he has cost us a number of games due to his play calling. Excuse me if I can’t get excited over this news.
I don’t know, he probably traded Sinatra too.
Brilliant move by BOB. Of course you weren’t going to beat KC and Bal, probably didn’t have a realistic chance against Pit either. If he “turns it around” against what is assuredly lesser competition the rest of the season, then he gains job security in Houston or elevated himself for the next job if he gets booted.
Next he will be taking hot dog orders at the concession stand. Does the owner not understand he is the problem. He worked for Belicheat. He isn’t Belicheat.
That’d be great for the customers. You could negotiate Bill down to paying you to take and eat the hot dog.
Bill O’Brien is like AIDS. He is so f-d up and terrible that if you have him, getting more doesn’t really make things worse.
Here comes the BOB hate….won the division 4 times in 6 years……
Most fans would prefer it be done without two hands tied behind their back though.
Most probably just want to win
