Packers rookie tight end Josiah Deguara will miss the rest of the season because of an ACL tear he suffered Monday night, Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com tweets.
Green Bay coach Matt LaFleur called the injury “a pretty bad one,” but has not confirmed it is season-ending. However, it does appear the third-round draft choice will not return until 2021.
Deguara returned to action Monday after dealing with ankle and shin ailments. The Cincinnati product missed the previous two Packers games. Though also spending time as a fullback, Deguara was the top pass catcher the Packers chose in a draft scrutinized due to the team’s lack of a wide receiver investment. Deguara posted 972 receiving yards and 12 touchdown receptions between his junior and senior seasons with the Bearcats.
As for the Packers’ tight end picture, they still have some decent depth at the position. They have 15th-year veteran Marcedes Lewis, 2019 third-rounder Jace Sternberger and 2020 touchdown machine Robert Tonyan on their active roster going into Week 5.
Tough break for the kid. The NFL in 2020. See you next year.
I feel bad for the guy, but hey, at least he won’t play any less this year than the two players the Packers took ahead of him.
I know it was mostly a joke, but I agree with the sentiment in spirit. Deguara felt like an unneeded pick to me. We’ve now seen afterward that Tonyan has been by far Rodgers’ top receiving tight end while Lewis is by far the best blocker. Sternbergsr has not managed to hold on to the ball this season, but he was picked just last year and had some showing of success last postseason. I do hope the best for Deguara and hope that he returns healthy but I’m also not sure what his role in the offense would have been this year.
Dillon has at least played a bit this year and had some value, I will say that.
I’m with you, though not quite as generous to Dillon. The guy’s had eight carries and the team is planning to keep Jones around. Spending a 2nd round pick on a running back is always an iffy value proposition. Drafting one nobody had going that high is another. Drafting him over receivers you glaringly need is yet another. Doing all that when you already have a featured back you plan on keeping around is bizarre.
Tonyan is a beast this year
Gutekunst’s three drafts have been nothing short of abysmal.
2018 you got Alexander only. You also got a punter and MVS who wouldn’t make most rosters.
2019 you got Jenkins who seems like a good pick. Savage is up in the air. Gary is questionable. Then that’s it.
2020 you got nothing yet. Still too early to tell but early returns on Dillon and this TE have been garbage. Unless Love turns out to be the next Patrick Mahomes the rest of the draft is garbage.
Basically in 3 drafts GB has netted 2 starters on defense and I’ll say 2 on offense but that’s granting MVS starter status.
