After last night’s loss to the Broncos, the Jets are still winless, and still sticking with their head coach. Adam Gase will not lose his job following the 37-28 defeat, according to a source who spoke with Connor Hughes of The Athletic.

There was conflicting word on Gase’s status heading into Thursday night. Earlier in the week, there were rumblings of an early season hook for Gase if the Jets fell to 0-4. But, as we heard before kickoff, Gase’s job wasn’t in immediate jeopardy, regardless of the outcome.
For now, Hughes hears, the Jets plan to keep Gase through the end of the year. Of course, that can always change, and the Jets may feel differently by November. The Jets have the Cardinals, Chargers, Bills, Chiefs, and Patriots coming up, a stretch that could put them out of playoff contention by the midway point of the season.
The Jets believe that firing Gase could stifle the development of quarterback Sam Darnold, who is still only 23 and in his third pro season. The Jets may also be concerned about how they’re perceived by coaching candidates early next year, if they do in fact part ways with Gase. The former Dolphins head coach was only just hired in January of 2019, and top coaches will hesitant to join up with Gang Green if they think they’re facing a quick hook.
Despite the tough games ahead, Gase’s fortunes could turn around as the offense gets back to full strength. Receivers Breshad Perriman and Denzel Mims are expected to return soon, along with running back Le’Veon Bell.
If your goal is to lose for Lawrence….then keep him all year
Jets fans want the #1 pick
Gase was a bad hire from day one. He has just shown how dysfunctional he could run a team in Miami so you immediately bring him in to what’s already seen as dysfunctional franchise by most? The Lawrence question is a good one. I think I’d personally take Lawrence and trade Darnold but they like Darnold and I do see him being a good starter for someone going forward he just has zero to work with right now. But they’d get a kings ransom to trade back. I hate to use the phrase can’t miss but if you’re going to use it Lawrence might just be one of those Andrew Luck types where you just know. You don’t see teams trade young qbs like Darnold but like the Cardinals did if you are confident Lawrence is that type you do it.
Jets if they want to trade Darnold aren’t going to get much. Simple reasons, first they see what he is after 3 seasons and he’s not a game changer to invest a 1st round or 2nd round draft pick in. Second, he has a 1st round contract, which as the years go by gets more expensive. A team after this year will be trading for a project QB in the 4th year of his contract and will probably have his 5th year option picked up by the Jets. His cap hit next year is over $9.2 million.
Good! Last night proved he has things on the right track!
Jets players looked so distraught on the sideline toward the end of the game. Maybe the goal is to tank for Trevor and save money by getting guys to opt out midseason. Losing to undrafted rookie QBs and continuing to have to tolerate Adam Gase must make that tempting.
Jets ownership is clueless if the concern is actually Darnold’s development. They probably already ruined Darnold’s development, Gase has been stifling his development since he was hired.
“and top coaches will hesitant to join up with Gang Green if they think they’re facing a quick hook.”
I disagree. If they hesitate, it will be because of how incompetent Jets ownership is or how poorly constructed their roster is. It won’t be because Adam Gase was rightfully fired for being a bad coach.
Yep. It’s not that weird for a coach to get the hook after a GM changes. The feeling that the incompetence with the Jets is more structural than that is the bigger problem. Being doomed to fail is a greater fear than being doomed to get fired IF you fail.
Are the Jets this bad or are they tanking to fire the coach or draft the top College QB Trevor Lawrence
I guess the same could be said for the Giants. Haha
Players don’t have enough career security to tank. The Jets have a lot of players who would be at risk of not getting another good shot at a job. Which also speaks to the team being that bad. Their offensive line is mostly patched together with a bunch of new journeymen and one high pick rookie. Their top targets yesterday other than Crowder: Uh… a 32 year old who caught 8 passes last year? A former 6th round pick claimed off waivers from the Patriots? Yesterday saw 9 targets for undrafted rookie Jeff Smith. Their lead running back right now is only a few months younger than Pete Buttigieg. And that’s before even getting into their defense, which was a mess before Mosely opted out. They’re that bad.
As a Giants fan, I sincerely don’t think they’re tanking or ever would. I just think Gettleman has constructed a horrendous roster while trying really hard to win. I read something the other day (so who knows if it’s true) that he barely knows how to use a computer.
I think he relies on old-school scouting mixed with a big ego and a lot of arrogance and on top of that, he’s not really a good talent evaluator.
Related, but I can’t remember a time when the Jets and Giants were this bad at the same time. I think you have to go back to the 70s.
First off, Williams is back to his old ways by having his defense take dirty hits on players. NFL shouldn’t have ever let him come back and he should be banned for life before someone gets seriously hurt and the Jets are a joke. Their roster has a ton of holes, Darnold has no weapons and is always under pressure so it’s not entirely on Gase but I don’t think Gase is a good coach at all. He should be fired. The only thing that sucks is the GM just got a big deal so whoever they bring in for HC will have to be good with working with him. They have a mess on their hands that’s for sure.
Yep. It’s wild that the league can talk about valuing player safety while letting him still coach.
If the Jets opened a funeral home, no one would die.
Wall Street.
That’s hilarious!
Don’t stifle Darnold so we can get Lawrence…okay.
Okay. I know everyone wants Trevor Lawrence thought Jets losing on Purpose
If they believe in Sam and get #1 pick they could trade #1 pick for several players and picks to play with Sam. Jets could do a Herchel Walker trade.
agreed. Sam doesn’t suck. Get his that Denver receiving corp last night and the Jets woulda won. Move down a few spots and Take the boat load of picks plus a player or two
What a fine organization….. they remind me of the knicks….
And the Mets! There’s a reason I drink.
Sam D saw ghosts last year. He’s done. We all know that expect Jets brass. But they’re rich and we only comment on websites.
It might not necessarily be a good look to fire him this soon, but no one (not even other coaching candidates) should blame them if they do. He’s just been downright terrible, and they should have even fired him last year but tried to be patient with him
HAHA, if the Jets get that #1 pick, Trevor will probably just say, “Yeah, I like it at Clemson. Coming back for next season!”
Why do people continue to believe that tanking is a winning strategy? During the SB era only 3 QBs chosen first overall (Bradshaw, Aikman & Peyton Manning) led the team that drafted them to a championship. 20 other QBs drafted first overall either did not or have not succeeded in doing that.
In fairness, there isn’t that big a sample of #1 overall QBs, many of whom would have had to beat out dynasties, and all of the ones you cited were before the current CBA. In the current CBA, if a QB hits the ground running during his rookie contract, there’s just so much more money to throw at the supporting cast. And while number one overall picks haven’t been winning super bowls, QBs on their rookie deals have been winning or getting their teams very close, and you can understand wanting their pick of which guy to attempt that with. Your point is well taken, though, and tanking is definitely overrated (especially since you can %$#@ the bed and still not get the top pick).
Goff came close but how likely is it that Mayfield, Murray or Burrow lead their current team to a championship? The tanking strategy appears to be about 7x more likely to fail than succeed so you have to wonder why fans think it’s a great approach for struggling teams to adopt.
The really well run teams are almost never bad enough to draft a QB high. Maybe the hope is for a team to get a high pick QB and then have a smart coach come in, like with the Rams. The Browns have only given Mayfield disastrously unfit coaches before this year. Hopefully this is the start of something better. And if Burrow turns out to be a superstar, maybe they will have a shot.
Do Eli Manning and John Elway count too? I would count draft day trades for the #1 overall pick being the same thing if you win for the team that had you by the end of that draft. You never were officially signed to a contract by the team that originally had your draft rights.
Had they made the right choice they would not be in this mess. Anyone with any knowledge of football when it comes to the executive level knew this was a bad match. By the end of week eight they will either be 1-7 or 0-8. Which will mean he will have the chance to be 7-17 in his first 24 games as the head coach and I think any head coach candidate can understand then why the quick hook. Plus you have to work at not only the losses but how they are losing, before Thursday night they were getting blown out in every game that is a sign that the team has quit on him.
Also, did anyone ever think they are not getting rid of Adam because they are hoping he will give them a historically horrible season so they can draft Trevor Lawrence
As a Jets fan, which I am, the fear is throwing the season, getting the #1 pick, and then not taking Lawrence for a stupid reason.
These are the Jets, after all.
Lawrence will be the top quarterback in the draft, but who will be the top overall player by ability/talent? If there’s a truly dominant edge rusher, I could see the Jets going that way.
I could see them trading down a couple picks and going for Jermarr Chase.
If you have the #1 pick in a draft with an elite QB prospect, you either take the QB or you trade down. Taking anything else at the top would be wasted value. Someone will trade the farm to take Lawrence if whoever’s at the top doesn’t.
