The Giants are shuffling around their receiving corp. They’re waiving receiver Damion Ratley and promoting receiver Austin Mack from the practice squad, the team announced Tuesday.
Ratley had actually been playing a fairly sizable role lately, especially after the injury to Sterling Shepard, so this is somewhat surprising. A sixth-round pick of the Browns in 2018, Ratley was waived by Cleveland at final cuts this year and claimed by the Giants the next day. He started a few games in each of his two years with the Browns, and had 200 yards and a touchdown last season.
So far with the Giants Ratley had played about 40 percent of the offensive snaps through five games, so that’s a decent amount of playing time that will now be available to Mack and others. He didn’t catch a pass this past week against the Giants, but had three receptions for 34 yards the week before against the Rams.
He’ll likely get a shot with someone else before too long. Mack is an undrafted rookie who signed with the Giants back in April and was added to the practice squad after final cuts. He’s an Ohio State product.
Thank god! Ratley did nothing to standout. Whether it was an offensive penalty, dropped ball, or missed block that was the only time his #19 was called. Never was able to get separation off the line of scrimmage, or catch a contested ball. Was wondering what took the Giants so long to cut him.
Looking forward to seeing what the big bodied Mack can do in the red zone and on crossing patterns.
I’m not really sure what Mack can do but if he wins us a game by accident and we lose out on better draft picks I’m gonna be heated. Can’t wait for Gettleman to be shown the door.
Gettleman might legitimately be called the worst GM in the NFL. Constant misfires along the OL, drafting a QB whose ceiling is “meh” (with some serious questions if he even gets to “meh”), his love affair with Leonard Williams, less than inspiring head coaching hires. He’s just terrible.
That’s quite a bit of an exaggeration. Unimpressive? Sure. But Les Snead still has a job, as does Brian Gutekunst and Bob Quinn. I haven’t even mentioned Ryan Pace, who I personally do not consider quite as bad as most (while still considering him well below average). Jones is not as bad as people recently seem to think, and while Gettleman has struck out a few times, his actual track record is more along the lines of “below average” than it is “outright putrid”. I know that won’t be popular to hear, but he’s not quite as bad his press, while still being below average.
