Could the Texans replace Bill O’Brien with Deshaun Watson’s former mentor, Dabo Swinney? According to the Clemson head coach, the answer is no. At least, for now.

“I have not heard from Deshaun and that is not even anything that I want to even have to think about,” the two-time national champ said, via Matt Young of The Houston Chronicle. “You would be the one to ask that question out of all the questions. You don’t want to ask anything about Miami? Next question.”
Swinney was connected to the Texans job immediately following word of O’Brien’s firing. The speculation made — and still makes — lots of sense. The Tigers head coach isn’t just close with Watson, he also has a good relationship with executive Jack Easterby, who is currently in charge of operations.
Swinney famously compared Watson to Michael Jordan in the buildup to the 2017 draft, where the Texans landed him at No. 12 overall. Even with a football MJ under center, the Texans started 0-4, leading to O’Brien’s surprise dismissal.
If the Texans do go after Swinney, it’ll cost them — he currently ranks as the highest-paid college football coach in the nation with a salary of $9.3MM per year.
How good a coach do we think Dabo is if you strip away the importance/advantage of recruiting? That’s one of his biggest strengths. That’s not a knock on him, but it’s a pretty big distinction between the two jobs.
Dabo Swinney: I’m Not Thinking About Texans Job
Well he is ‘dreaming’ about it, rolling eyes
I mean why not go for it, although it is in the middle of the season
Because he’s making so much money, has so much job security, and gets to be king of his domain with all the players cycling in and out unpaid.
go to a team that lost it best WR for a joke of a trade. or stay in college make good money and has the chance at the best players in the us. i think ill stay in college
You can stay at Clemson and be a god. Or come to Houston and be a glorified politician.
Decisions… decisions…
I’OL never understand why bead coaches that are legends in college want to go to the NFL. If you are in a position like Swinney or Saban are right now, or like Bobby Bowden, Joe Paterno, Steve Spurrier and Mack Brown were, why would you ever even think about leaving? You are a god and make tons of money at top national programs, where after a few amazing years, you can coast because your name and the university’s name does all the recruiting for you. Those guys don’t/didn’t have to recruit hardly at all after a certain period of success, other than a telephone call to the top recruits saying “come here and play and you’ll be a first round NFL pick.”
Also, at Dabo’s current salary, he would be the 5th highest paid NFL coach right now. No way he makes that kind of money immediately in the NFL. Stay at Clemson and become an all time legend among college football coaches or go to NFL and be fired in 2-3 years because you didn’t win a Super Bowl with Deshaun Watson? Seems an easy choice.
unless your pete and have to leave because of mistakes you made there shouldnt be a reason to leave college. like you said he has it all. why leave for a job he might not have for long if he cant do anything in the first two years
Carroll also had NFL experience and may have felt like he still had something to prove there. Swinney has zero NFL coaching experience.
Why leave for that pressure? He’s on top
Of the mountain
No reason to leave if you have a Top-5 club year in and year out.
The Texans have the highest payroll in the NFL. The Texans are missing key draft picks. Dabo should stay away
