Ahead of Gerald Everett‘s contract year, the Rams opted to extend Tyler Higbee. This leaves Everett as a player who could be bound for free agency in 2021.
Certain other teams appear to view the situation this way, with Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic noting the Rams have received calls on Everett’s availability (Twitter link). However, the Rams are not currently planning to move the former second-round pick, Rodrigue adds.
While Everett has not quite lived up to his Round 2 billing, he has worked in Sean McVay‘s system for three seasons and has served as an auxiliary contributor. Last season, he was enjoying a potential breakout year. But an injury halted his progress. Everett finished last season with 37 catches for 408 yards. The Rams used a fourth-round pick on Brycen Hopkins this year, but the pandemic taking away rookies’ onsite offseason work stands to limit their development.
The Rams appeared closer to trading Higbee in 2018, having exchanged offers with the Vikings on the 2016 draft pick. But after Higbee’s strong stretch to close last season, the Rams extended him instead. It would seem Everett will make a final audition reel for free agency this season.
Higbee was extended before his breakout
And I like roast beef sandwiches. Who cares?
Nice! Love your name! Dale Murphy is too!
Because them extending him before a breakout year could impact how they negotiate with other pending FAs
It also shows they already had confidence in Higbee, and they were trying to catch him before he got too expensive..With then even seeing his extension and raise as a bargain compared to what they thought his potential might earn him later on.
Trade him to the Patriots, they could use another TE and they have a lot of draft picks for 2021. They did draft 2 TE’s in 2020 but both have a ways to go.
Makes sense to me. The Rams need to restock their stable if draft picks, while the Patriots lack viable weapons beyond Asiasi at the position. Furthermore, the Rams already drafted Everett’s replacement with Hopkins and Higbee is perfectly capable of taking on an expanded role
Fr ok m all the reports I have heard AsiAsi is actually killing it in camp and is doing extremely well. Sounds as if not only is he picking up the offense well, but he is also prov9ng to be a more well-rounded TE than they even originally thought.
Still though, every team could use a talented TE like Everett..I think the Pat’s would love nothing more than lining up Cam, Edelman, Harry, Everett, AsiAsi, and either White or Michel…McDaniels could really do some damage with that package of players and weapons…
That is a very similar package as to the one I expect the 49ers to eventually bust out with Kyle Shanahan using his two big threats at TE in Kittle and Reed alongside his YAC monsters in Deebo and Aiyuk, and then either his all-world runner in Mostert coming out of the backfield or his recieving back McKinnon as a potential nightmare for opposing defense’s LBs..
That personnel grouping would be heck to stop, especially for under route combos
All I have to say is good luck with stopping that
Vikings made a grave mistake not trading a 6th rounder for Higbee when they had a chance.
Yeah, yeah, we know, the Dolphins are going to waive him.
If McVay is such an offensive genius, why wouldn’t he use Everett’s size and skills better to his advantage, especially having two matchup problems with Higbee as well..
Having those two, and potentially Akers coming out of the backfield with Kupp and Woods would be one heck of a personnel grouping…McVay is an extremely intelligent coach, and it has almost been impossoble for him to live up to the boy genius hype, although he has managed the pressure extremely well this far.
Still though, this season is going to he a huge test for him and Goff as well. They both have alot on the line this season, but the odds certainly aren’t in their favor..
I would consider the Rans making the playoffs a major successful season for McVay..That is largely due to the fact that several analysts have then pegged as finishing as far down as last in the vaunted NFC West…
Kingsbury and Murray are both on the rise, plus with them having Drake for a full season, and them adding some versatility and increasing their depth and talent at OL, especially with two behemoths like Galliard and Jones ready to contribute right away, it should help them maintain a top flight running game. Also, by adding one of the NFL’s best in Hopkins to an already extremely talented and versatile WR room, the Cardinals are definitely looking to take another step towards contending..Add in their defense getting stronger with a solid mixture of new additions, younger players stepping up, and seasoned vets leading the way, and the Cardinals are looking more and more like a legitimate, or at least plausible contender. Baker, Cambell, Fotu (R), Peterson, Chandler Jones, Hicks, Kirkpatrick, Lawrence (R), Byron Murphy (2nd), Peters, Phillips, Reddick, Simmons (R), Thompson (2nd)..These 5 first and second year players contributions and their growth very well could be the difference between Arizona making or missing the playoffs, but the aforementioned veterans should help steady the boat, and they should combine to make a pretty solid core grouping..
Fans shouldnt sleep on the Cardinals, but even as young and as talented as they are, they’re still looking up at the Seahawks and the 49ers. Both teams need to stay healthy to reach their ultimate ceilings, but it wouldn’t surprise anyone to see either representing the NFC in the Super Bowl next season..
That is the main reason I am concerned for McVay and Rams’ fans..It is like they already have to contend against two of the top teams 4 times, but it seems even their best hope is as the 2nd WC team..And that’s if just about everything goes right for them../:
Yeah, everyone likes to pretend the Rams are an elite contender because they have a flashy offense and a pair of outstanding individual defenders in Ramsey and Donald. However, their lack of cap space and draft capital has prohibited them from acquiring depth and youth at key positions, such as tackle and linebacker.
Their offensive line is a mess on the interior, Whitworth isn’t getting any younger, Goff hasn’t adapted to opposing defenses, they didn’t replace Littleton, and even the defensive line lacks viable depth beyond Donald and Brockers.
Thus, it’s no wonder the Rams are pegged as fourth place finishers, albeit within the toughest division in football. I’m still skeptical of Arizona, however. The offense should be explosive, but I feel the defense is a tad overrated. They have some great individual pieces in Jones, Simmons, and Hicks, yet aren’t a very cohesive unit overall. The run defense is particularly lackluster. I could see Arizona or LAR sneaking in as a wild card, but just don’t see a win count exceeding ten
I like what both of you said, and wanted to add that when the Rams were using Everett AND Higbee, their offense was most effective. There was talk of Everett superseding Higbee on the depth chart when Higbee was injured by some people. Obviously that was a bit over the top, but I agree that it would wasteful to shed young (and cheap) talent when you’re in the position that the Rams are.
