The Rams left their roster at 52 players after cutdown day, and the team filled the roster spot with a player familiar with their new defensive coordinator.
Los Angeles submitted a waiver claim for Justin Hollins, a linebacker whom Denver cut Saturday, and the 2019 draft pick will rejoin Brandon Staley. The Broncos used Hollins at both inside and outside linebacker spots last season; Staley coached Denver’s outside linebackers in 2019.
This will bring another ex-Staley pupil to L.A. The Rams already signed Leonard Floyd, whom Staley coach in Chicago, to be a starter. Hollins, a fifth-round pick out of Oregon, profiles as a depth piece.
The Rams also set their practice squad Sunday. All 15 players were in camp with the Rams this year, so for those hoping to go in fresh for the Hard Knocks finale next week, this is the spoiler warning.
Here is how the Rams’ practice squad looks:
- LB Daniel Bituli
- TE Kendall Blanton
- C Cohl Cabral
- DT Marquise Copeland
- CB Donte Deayon
- G Jamil Demby
- DT Michael Hoecht
- DB JuJu Hughes
- WR J.J. Koski
- DB Tyrique McGhee
- LB Derrick Moncrief
- LB Natrez Patrick
- QB Bryce Perkins
- LB Christian Rozeboom
- DE Jonah Williams
The Rams are going to need to develop a few key young and cheap players, and get them into some reserve roles and some of their rotations.
With them having paid Donald, Goff, and Ramsey soon enough, they’re going to have to get some contributions from some players in cheap deals..
One of these possible players could end up Tyrique McGhee. McGhee is a versatile DB that can excel in man and in zone coverage, in the slot, and he had training as a CB and as a Safety in college..
If the Rams can develop McGhee, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see him making some contributions in their secondary either this year or next and moving forward. He certainly has the tools and especially the speed, hopefully he is able to pick up their playbook quickly and learn his assignments. If not, he might never get the chance to be anything more than a standout ST player..
Anyone hear anything about McGhee coming out of “camp?”
