The Raiders are releasing safety Damarious Randall, as Mike Garafolo of NFL.com tweets. The Raiders are still on the hook for the veteran’s $1.5MM guaranteed base salary, though that will be offset by the salary paid to Randall by his new team.
Randall, 28, spent the first three years of his career with the Packers before moving on to the Browns in 2018. Last year, he was limited to just eleven games, though he still managed 2.5 sacks, 61 total stops, and six passes defensed. All in all, he’s got 56 career starts and 14 interceptions to his credit across five NFL seasons. The Raiders inked him to a one-year deal worth up to $3.25MM in early April, but they’ve decided to go in a different direction.
The Washington Football Team and the Seahawks also expressed interest in Randall in March. Those teams may or may not circle back to him, but it stands to reason that he’ll find work somewhere. The Raiders’ secondary, meanwhile, will work to improve their work against the pass. Last year, they surrendered 256.7 passing yards per game, the eighth-highest total in the league.
The Washington Football Team. What a joke!
They’re young …
I thought the Seahawks are the Washington football team.
Browns come calling
Browns have already proven they can be loaded with talent and still miss the playoffs. So keep adding
Might as well. Should be familiar with the scheme and could push Harrison for the starting job. His savviness in pass coverage could also pair well with Sendejo, who plays in the box
What a great move…not. Why was he signed in the first place?
I’m asking the same thing. Makes no sense
It was a one year deal. During camp he proved he wasn’t better than Heath, Joyner and harris. Just because you sign a player to a one year deal and he isn’t better than what you have. You don’t keep him around
You took the words straight out of my mouth. There’s nothing wrong with some healthy competition. They took a flier on both Randall and Heath, hoping one of the two could step up. Obviously, Randall got outperformed and Oakland felt safe cutting their losses. Randall played relatively well last season, so it’s not as though they handed a check to a complete scrub either.
Btw, don’t forget about Abram. He looked good before that devastating week one injury
Abram projects much better as a SS. Joyner should be playing FS, but the Raiders insist on using him at CB. But you’re right, he looked pretty good and had the same excellent closing speed he had in college. The only worry I have about Abram is that he plays with such ferocity that I am concerned he’ll injure himself frequently.
Where are the Raiders at with the cap now that this move and Nathan Peterman’s deal is reworked? Any chance of going after a guy like AP? Just released and could be a quality back up to Jacobs that will run in between the tackles…seems like everyone behind Jacobs is more the pass catching type
I think AP was informed that the new scheme was not going to be power run dominated and he was going to be limited in snaps. I believe he chose to go elsewhere with his services. The Raiders already have a focal point RB and AP has proven that he does not play well with others.
