Jason Peters got what he wanted. On Thursday, the Eagles agreed to revise the veteran’s deal to pay him up to $8MM with $4MM guaranteed, according to agent Vince Taylor (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Mike Garafolo).

The Eagles brought Peters back this summer to fill-in for injured guard Brandon Brooks. The lifelong tackle agreed to do so at a lesser rate – $3MM in base pay, plus $3M in incentives tied to playing time. The package included some easily achievable bonuses ($400K for 75% playing time), plus some trickier ones ($350K for 75% PT + Super Bowl victory; $1MM for 90% PT + First-Team All-Pro selection).
Then, the injury bug bit Andre Dillard. Peters asked for a pay bump to move back to his native position and the Eagles obliged. The extra expense is well worth it for the Birds. While the 38-year-old has lost a step, he still turned in a solid 2019 – Pro Football Focus graded him as the league’s sixth-best tackle among 81 qualifiers in 2019. Considering the going rate for tackles – and the dearth of talent at this stage of the offseason – it was a no-brainer. Even if Peters maxes out his full incentives package, he’s still a tremendous bargain at ~$8MM for the year.
Great. There should be provisions for false starts and plays missed as he’s pretty much guaranteed to visit the tent every game. Instead of bumping up his pay they should’ve spent on a player they can rely upon, not a guy that was great years ago and you can’t depend upon to finish a game.
News flash. There wasn’t a player to be relied upon. The eagles are in salary cap hell due to piss poor drafting and having to pay free agents. He was penalized 10 times last year. 6 for false starts. PFF graded him very well last year. He can still be relied upon. Sounds like you’re complaining about nothing. Maybe complain about the fact that they spent a first round pick on a guy who can’t suit up and looks like a bust. Jason Peters has to come and bail the eagles out. I’d ask for a raise too to protect your QB’s blindside
How’d this work out Andy? LOL!
lame
Smart move
JP is my all-time favorite Eagle. However, I was against them bringing him back. You cannot depend on him to finish a game.
I hope Wentz can survive on Sunday because the OL is a dumpster fire right now.
Maybe he’s not the most reliable injury-wise at this stage of his career, but he’s far and away the best free agent option and familiar with the blocking scheme. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet if you want to attain team success
This is one fat jerk who I lost complete respect for
Calling someone a “fat jerk” isn’t going to get you any respect either
Turns out Lane Johnson was the real team player that restructured his deal so they could appease JP.
Appease JP? How about to save your QB from getting killed. Question for you. If not Jason Peters, who starts over there? Matt Pryor? Give me a break. He was apparently getting killed by Josh Sweat in scrimmages.
I’ll bet dollars to donuts the team went to JP and said look, we need you to play left tackle because he is their best option right now. JP agrees but wants a raise. What’s the problem? That’s business. I’d ask for a raise too
He sat at home all summer waiting for the phone to ring off the hook, it didn’t. They gave him the only decent and fair contract and he thanks them by bitching about needing more money. They’ll still need to find a serviceable LT because JP can be counted on to not be counted on, guaranteed he’ll miss time in Sunday’s game.
Wah wah wah. You’re just complaining now. Good luck finding a serviceable left tackle at this stage. Matt Pryor sure looked great over there. Maybe that’s the real reason they asked JP to move over there because they didn’t feel confident with anyone in house. And why are you criticizing someone who wants more money to play a more important role? Protecting your franchise quarterback. You sound like you’re the one who is “bitching”
Wah wah wah? It played out exactly as I said it would.
I really wish JP would have retired. He’s washed up and I’m really not looking forward to all the holding and false start penalties he’ll get. He had a great tenure in Philly, but these recent salary demands has greatly diminished my admiration and respect for his career.
+1
Washed up? PFF graded him as the 6th best tackle in the league last year.
He was penalized 10 times and gave up just 3 sacks. He’s been injured but that comes from the mileage he’s put on over the years
Hardly washed up
I don’t know why Philly fans are complaining. You could do a lot worse
And just yesterday he gave up 3 sacks, was penalized came up injured in crunch time when the team couldn’t afford an injury…yeah, he’s washed up!
Great call genius! The future Hall of Fame is now on the IR. Then again at least they know they won’t dress him unlike most games they dress him and he hobbles off leaving them a player short.
Disappointed and disgusted!
Ah, this has worked out as well as expected. “The future Hall of Famer” has looked horrible so far and should be benched.
