Waived/injured:
The two quarterback cuts will leave Daniel Jones and Colt McCoy as the Giants’ only two quarterbacks to start their post-Eli Manning era, though Rush certainly would profile as a practice squad candidate. He played for new OC Jason Garrett in Dallas for three seasons.
Connelly’s cut is somewhat surprising, given the linebacker’s three starts last season. But an injury cut short his rookie season. The Giants can place 16 players on their practice squad this season. If Connelly clears waivers, it is likely he will be part of that group.
The Giants re-signed Halapio days ago. He has been Big Blue’s starting center in each of their past two Week 1 games, and the former Patriots draft pick started 15 games in 2019. The Giants did not tender Halapio as an RFA this offseason and kept Nick Gates, whom they extended this year, and Spencer Pulley on the roster over him.
Halapio could remain in the stadium since the Jets cut both potential backups to McGovern.
Why did they waive Connelly? He looked good before he got hurt in his rookie year.
Connelly move makes no sense. Hopefully he signs onto practice squad but I have a feeling he signs elsewhere
What was the point of signing Halapio like 3 days ago to just cut him today? Like you have to assume that signing him they were planning on him making the roster — but how could he have been so bad in literally like 3 days to warrant being cut? I would imagine they worked him out before signing him so it’s not like they could’ve been disappointed with his conditioning… unless they for some reason… didn’t work him out ahead of time… in which case I think that might be ever weirder.
Got a feeling Connelly is not completely healthy, since he wasn’t involved much in contact practices. Always read that he was “off to the side” or similar verbiage. Sure though that he will land on the 16 player practice squad unless he gets signed by another team.
I believe Connely will be back…. Mayo and McKinney are headed to the IR
