Jason Peters has a new deal, thanks in part to teammate Lane Johnson. The Eagles’ right tackle agreed to turn a large portion of his base salary into signing bonus pay, giving the Birds upwards of $5MM in cap room and the space to give Peters his pay bump (Twitter link via Ian Rapoport of NFL.com).

Johnson is in the midst of the four-year, $72MM extension he signed back in November of 2019. That deal gave Johnson a staggering $54.595MM in guaranteed cash and an average salary of $18MM/year. It was a sizable step up from his last contract, which paid less than $11MM per annum.
Minor accounting aside, the deal remains unchanged. The veteran is still signed through 2025, cementing him as a pillar of the Eagles’ O-Line for years to come. This year, with guard Brandon Brooks and tackle Andre Dillard sidelined, he’ll be more critical than ever.
The eighth-year pro is coming off of his third consecutive Pro Bowl nod, a rare feat for often under-looked right tackles.
Team player…
“The Eagles’ right tackle agreed to turn a large portion of his base salary into signing bonus pay”
I’d be a team player as well if they paid the majority of my salary before week 1 as well.
I think it’s dopey for players who have worked their butt off to gain leverage to offer any kind of discount. Johnson is not in a vulnerable position like Malcolm Jenkins was when he gave ownership a team friendly deal.
Yes because the millions he’s already made and still has needs to be replenished ASAP, before week 1 just so he can buy some groceries this weekend…
Boo Hoo. stop complaining about people’s salaries and make your own money. whine elsewhere
That’s brilliant genius, take your own advice and don’t whine about LJ getting his money earlier…
Jason Peters is an ass hopefully the Eagles when the first time Jason Peters gets injured this year and comes out of the game hopefully the Eagles try to redo his contract saying well you missed x amount of time so we’re going to try to take a little bit of money away
JP spends more time in the sideline tent than the huddle…
You do realize that he’s still a top 10 LT in this league and a HOFer, right? Since 2013 when LJ came into the league, he’s missed more games than JP has (some suspension related). And Johnson has missed more games the last two years than JP as well. His injury history is overblown.
JP’s problem is it seems at least once maybe even twice a game after a play they pan to Jason Peters laying on the ground holding something and have to go to commercial and come back and see him limping off of a field
He’s play 36 of the last 48 games, but how many of those 36 did he play but came out hurt? He’s played 37%, 80% and then 75% of the snaps in those seasons. That 80% was in a season he “played” all 16 games.
He has a good shot at the HoF, nobody disputing that, but hearing that constantly is getting old. What he did 7 years or so ago means nothing for what he can provide today.
His contract was up, he was free to broker a deal elsewhere and nobody gave him close to what he thought he was worth today. The Eagles gave him the best offer and a chance to go back into his old locker room. Great…until somebody gets hurt and he decides he’s going to ask for more money. Really? He already had a fair deal at $3mil with another $3mil in incentives but he needs a kicker to be a team player? GTFOH…
This is a silly article.
You’re thanking Lane Johnson for taking more of his cash early?
Also, these contract reworks that shift salary into a signing bonus are often built into the original contract. So, the team can pull a trigger like this at any time and don’t even need the player’s ok. It’s just cap management.
